The morning was another picturesque one, birds chirping, the sunlight streaming in through the windows and a certain blue haired boy getting ready for the day's work. This was something the boy was looking forward to since the day Kit had shown him how to harness his energy and just what that energy could do. The basics were pretty easy to pick up considering all of the prep work that had preceeded them, what he was planning today however would be far more complex. Today Ethan was planning to develope something completely new, a technique of his own that if successful would give his existing mobility advantage over his brother an added boost. The technique wasn't intended for the purpose of competing with his brother however, instead Ethan was tailoring his fighting style to compliment his brother's. So far as Ethan had seen so far, Kit concentrated on power with the ability to fight at range if need be. Ethan however was taking a different angle, using mobility and speed to outmatch his opponents and get right in their face. However with Kit being able to fight at range and Ethan now having sufficient control of his power to actually throw opponents into range, the boy would need to not only move faster over ground, but the third dimension of height had come into play and that was the focus of today's exercise. If all developed as the boy hoped, Ethan would be able to utilize his energy to propell himself into that third dimension and maneuver through the air with sufficient agility so as to be able to use the ability effectively in combat.
The first step toward his goal would be attaining the proper focus needed to manipulate his energy in the ways described in some of the texts Kit had given him. While the ability to fly had been documented quite thoroughly in several of the the more obscure volumes, no simple humdrum floating around would due for Ethan's implacable sense of style. The kid wanted to show off with this technique, it was something that was going to put him leaps and bounds ahead of everyone and although his goal wasn't to compete with Kit, he was pretty certain that it would put him a step above in at least one facet, so the ability couldn't be pedestrian in the least. No, Ethan was going for something much more austentatious then simply hovering about with an invisible cushion of energy suspended within his body, instead, the boy was going to combine two art forms he'd learned about in the books into one, seemless technique. First, the field of energy he would use to lift himself would not form in his midsection but rather at his feet, providing a solid platform on which to stand rather then an amorphus blob within himself. Second, that energy would be sculpted into a very pronounced form, a glowing, blue surf board on which he would ride. The color would be the trickiest part, his own energy in it's natureal state lacked any color at all so he would need to temper the power he put into the board, manipulate not only it's form and function, but the frequency of light it would emmit.
With breakfast cleared away and Kit having disapeared without much word as to where he was going for the day, Ethan was left with free run of the school grounds, not that he didn't already have it, but now he had the freedom of not being monitored and did want for his new technique to be a surprise. Heading out into the gardens, the boy was dressed in his usual atire, leaving the fancy shirt his friend Jenn had givenin him, safely stored away. The boy started with a physical warm up to loosen his body up in preperation for the work ahead, running a lap around the inner perimiter of the surrounding wall and then stretched. The brisk morning air was chilly against his bare skin but having warmed up, it wasn't wholy unpleasent and before long the blue haired teen was ready to begin. Stopping by a fish pond, Ethan started by regulating his breathing, closed his eyes and started to focus on his energy. He'd only powered up a hand full of times since Kit had shown him how but still needed a moment to clear his mind to pull it off. Eventually he would be able to simply jump into the ascended state at will but for now, the activation and manipulation of his energy was a task that required extreme clarity of mind and concentration. After a moment's focus, the boy's energy errupted around him, although as usual it had no color and could barely be seen, radiating off of him like the heat distortion waves coming off of a hot roadway.
With his invisible energy radiating all about him, Ethan remained focused, feeling out the flow of energy coursing through his body. Picturing the flow as he was tought, the mental map showed the flow originating in his solarplexus and radiating to ever limb, then out of his skin in billowing waves, forming an envelope around his toned physique. Directing his attention to the energy radiating out of his legs, Ethan started to try and manipulate the waves into a more defined form, starting first with simply trying to change the shape of the envelope and then as the task became more comfortable, he started to alter the shape into his mental image of the board. To the outside observer, it looked as though the shirtless boy was still simply standing there, deep in thought. In reality his energy was indeed changing shape with his mental commands but the near invisible nature of his power made in near imposible to perceive the changes. As he continued to concentrate, the mental and physical exertion started to show as sweat started to bead on the boy's skin. The task was proving difficult but not imposible as Ethan could feel the changes he was commander were indeed occuring, but the responses were sluggish and crude, as one would expect from someone attempting such manipulations for the first time and unguided by a teacher. Still Ethan was progressing and after a few more minutes, the crude image of the surf board was taking shape into something more refined.
It was now time for the next step, to add color and physical substance to the board. Ethan had read about changing the color of energy blasts and such but given his energy's natural colorless state, the task was going to be a little more tricky. The method of changing the color of energy relied on changing the requency at which the energy vibrated, lower frequencies driving the energy into the red end of the light spectrum and higher frequencies driving into the blue end of the light spectrum. Being Ethan didn't know what color his energy was, shifting the color would be an exercise in trial and error. Deciding first to try increasing the frequency, or rather changing the pitch of the hum his energy generated in his mind's ear to something higher, Ethan drive the pitch to higher and higher levels until it started to give him a headache. Clearly his energy was already quite high in pitch in it's natural state so he would have to drive it lower. But the headache spawned by his attempt to drive the frequency up was prooving to be distracting. Taking a break, Ethan let his energy calm back down into an idle state and took a seat on one of the nearby meditation stones. The throbbing in his head wasn't quite a migrane, but it wasn't at all pleasent and would prevent any further concentration until it had subsided.
Watching the fish swim about in lazy circles in the pond made relaxing all the more easy, Ethan would regularly lose himself watching the fish and even just the ripples of the water, something that the boy didn't know now but in the future would become quite important. For now though the hypnotic effect of the water and it's aquatic inhabitants was simply a effective device for relaxation. Before long the blue haired teen felt himself ready to try again and stood up, once more taking a relaxed pose and closing his eyes. In moments he was able to summon up his energy and after a minute, managed to reform the basic shape of the board and after another minute, refined the shape to perfectly mirror his mental image. Now came once more the second task and so Ethan started to drive the frequency lower. The hum in his mind's ear steadily lowered in pitch, going from the equivalent of the highest note on a piccalo, down to something in the middle range of a clarenette, and then plunged rather abruptly through the pitch ranges of obo's, saxes and finaly into that of basoones. To the outside observer the sight would have been a comical cascade of color as the board became visible in the blue end of the spectrum, confirming Ethan's supposition that his energy was naturally high in pitch, and then shifted rapidly through the greens, yellow and red and then vanished once more into the infrared spectum.
While Ethan hadn't watched the actual progress of his colorization, he knew it was off as he had very little control of the pitch, at least at first. Continuing to concentrate, the boy drive the frequency back up, gradually bringing it back to where he'd started. Once more the board appeared beneith Ethan's feet, shifting through red, yellow, green, blue, lilac and then gone. Then starting once more, the boy started the bring the frequency down, exercising more control. Keeping a tight mental hold on the energy, the blue haired boy brought the frequency down in slow imcriments, the hum in his mind's ear shifting through the piccalo range, then flute and finally into clarenette. Opening his eyes to look down at the board, Ethan was pleased to see that it had indeed formed but the color was off, shifted a little too low into the green spectrum making the board look more like a giant mint rather then the glowing electric blue he wanted. Closing his eyes once more, Ethan drive the frequency up ever so slightly and then looked again, decided pleased with the results. The board no shimmered beneith his feet, glowing the very electric blue he desired. Making a note of the pitch it sounded like to his mind's ear, Ethan dismissed the board so that he could practice forming the board in the right color again.
The physical form and the color frequency in his board in mind, Ethan took a breath, the excitement of nearing perfecting the technique starting to ge the better of him. He needed to relax once more and focus else his excitement would get in the way. Another controlled breath and an extended gaze at the pond was all he boy needed to regain his complete composure and resume his focus. Keeping his eyes open this time, the blue haired boy started to manipulate his power once more, his hands closing into fists as channeling the energy after so long a time was becoming a strain as further reflected by the sweat that was now covering every inch of the teen's skin. In spite of the strain though, the boy managed to reform the board and in the correct color.
"Yes." he congradulated himself unclenched his fists and clapped. "Ok Ethan, you can do this." he went on, although his confidence really didn't need to be boosted as he'd already greatly exceeded his own expectations. Ready to try the last step and with his feet firmly planted on the the board, Ethan clenched his fists once more as he forced more of his energy into the board and then at once the board lifted off, rocketing into the air over the school. Struggling to maintain his balance, Ethan spread his arms like an actual surfer and glided through the air in an irratic path, narrowly missing colliding with the school. The boy cringed as he crashed through the top of a tree, his board still out of his control, at least for the moment. Spitting a leaf out of his mouth and shaking a few errant branches off, Ethan continued to rocket around the school grounds, gaining a bit more control over his unrully right.
"Rrrrr, come on...." he grunted to himself pulling through a tight loop and then managed to get some idea of how to control the direction of the board. Managing a left turn and then a right turn. It took a little longer to get control of flying up and down and controling the speed of the board, but after a few more minutes, the boy was soaring under much better control and once again his excitement returned. Gaining more and more control, the teen was practically exploding with bliss as his rode his flying surf board through the air. Giving a shout of joy, Ethan pulled off a vertical loop and descended back to the ground. This was simply too cool for him to keep to himself any longer, the teen just had to find Kit and show him, the blonde's mind would be completely blown when he saw Ethan riding his board, where where had he gone?
Hopping off of the board, Ethan ran into the school, leaving the blue energy contruct to evaporate into nothingness. Kit had been reading something before his departure but Ethan had had his own reading and assumed Kit would eventually pass along the book, so he'd not paid attention. If that book however told Ethan where Kit had gone, the blue haired boy had to find it and discover where his older brother had gone. Kit had no reason to hide it and before long, Ethan found the book and luckily for him, the page Kit had folded over described a location and some strange tower. Frankly the boy thought he was reading a work of fiction but if Kit had ventured off in search of his fictional tower, then Ethan would have to set off to find him. He followed Kit out of the mountains to this great city, so it was only natural that he would follow his older brother on his new mission of exploration and discovery. From the book, Ethan knew the direction to fly and he hoped he'd find Kit before he got to the tower, it would be so much more fitting that the brothers discover the place together. With his destination and mission in mind, Ethan bolted out of the school, stopping only long enough to secure the door before leaping into the air. Spreading one arm forward and the other back, the boy's blue glowing board burst into existance beneith his feet and off he went, soaring into the morning sky.
"Wooo hooooo! I'm on my way Kit!" the blue haired boy shouted in excitment as he flew off to find his brother.
