Hey all,
Ethan has mentioned that the two of us are creating a site for continued Roleplay. No details yet as it is in its early stages, but we will have it completed before Awakening is closed.
That said, we want to continue to make better and better sites. Resurrection was a vastly superior site to the previous World Of Dragonball installments, and although it branched off of the series, Awakening was a vastly superior Resurrection.
So here is my question. For the benefit of Ethan and I, and the feels of the staff, post below your favorite thing about Awakening. What was it that made this forum so awesome? What was your person favorite aspect that you hope to see continued?
While I would like this thread to remain positive, you may add anything you particularly didn't like, but be nice about it!
This is all in an effort to make the next site even better, and of course to reminisce.

Although power is the focal point of the Dragon Ball series, there is only so much you can do pertaining to just battle and training. This is where DBZ sites falter, and Awakening really had a way of dealing with it initially. Fantastic way, really, that kind of got short-circuited lately as PLs grew (again, the downside). The amount of work the admins and most people put into their characters, even side minions or just random NPCs, was incredible. I personally have enjoyed Leke the most out of any character I've ever roleplayed with in the past ten years. Awakening really gave me a chance to not only compete in writing style and quality, but also to create the most fleshed-out character I could. It was a real, living and breathing universe that I haven't seen in years. Most sites have a passive background whilst this one, everything was a moving part. Perhaps that's another reason we aren't going to continue; however, it's what made this site great.
Can't forget about the people, either. It's a limited community, yes, as DBZ gets further and further from being current media, but it's strong. I appreciate being able to be around such a group of RPers, all with their own unique personalities and writing styles. I'll be able to remember Awakening for a long while, I did have fun here, even during my writing blocks.

I know it isn't really necessary for me to post here since I'm culling the data with Kit, but I do want to say that above everything it's been the fine people here that have made the experience worth while and it is in the hope that we can keep playing with many of you that we're working on this new site.
Thanks guys. ^__^

Leke hit the biggest things really, the story should be able to focus things like they did here while still letting people branch it out with their unique characters and personalities and such. The next thing for me was the simplicity of the site, not having it overly complicated the tech tiers are easy to understand and the original PL system worked the best imo. It wasn't massive, but if you worked at it you could get decent gains from it, nothing too ridiculous or constricting people just had to roleplay and such to get their gains. Training gave decent gains, but it didn't overshadow interactions.
So, I guess for me the pl and tech systems were the next best things to me, if you got high enough to get the trans and whatnot you felt that you earned it.

I guess I should put in my two cents. First i just want to say that while we spawned off of WoDR staff has never considered ourselves part of that build. Yes we came from there but WoDR is its own entity just as Awakening is its own. So really the comparison between the two is a little odd.
As to why I personally have always found fun in this world is that the universe was fluid. There were more than a few times we had to scramble and adjust what we intended to do because of what another person did. The universe always felt alive. And part of that is the people that have passed through. I have seen some of the most unique characters that I have ever seen. I was once told that the site did not feel like it was a DBZ site. It felt like it was much more than that. That is why I always loved role-playing here.

One thing I just remembered after talking with Kass, this is probably the most important for any site in my opinion. The site needs to feel friendly both with the staff and members, a friendly atmosphere is the most important thing to make a site feel more like a community. That's what this site has in spades.

Because most of the positive things have already been mentioned, I think I'll try to point out some of this site's weaknesses, which I believe will give you far more insight. With that said, I first want it to be known that I think the staff has done a tremendous job and I thank you all for making this such an exciting experience. 1) Not everyone gets to run a site with their friends. I think that's one of the reasons why this particular staff was so successful. They all grew up with each other and their communication was on point. They delegated responsibilities and didn't challenge each other's authority or harm each other's "power" because they were all equally owners of Awakening. As you may have noticed, this first point is not a weakness in Awakening, but a projected weakness this new forum is likely to have. Of course, knowing that players like Kit and Ethan will be running this forum, I have no doubt you guys will make a solid team, but you'll also have your own staff of players you don't necessarily know in person. I'd advise caution. You must not show favoritism towards each other, if anything, you should be most stern when evaluating each other. Call each other out if something clearly violates the rules and don't feel offended because it's your "pal" giving you a hard time. When you make this new team of staff, you must keep all discussions private and act only when a consensus has been reached. Do not allow the members to notice any kind of discrepancy between the staff. Furthermore, this may sound a bit contradictory with what I just stated above, but because your team of staff will be composed of mostly strangers (people you never met in person or grew up with), there must exist a clear line between "Owners" and "Admins". Admins are replaceable. Owners are not. You're the president of the United States, and the admins are your congress. That way, if it turns out one of your staff members is not cut-out to be an admin, maybe they got too many warnings or they're not a team player, you can easily remove them from the system and open the position for a new staff member. 2) Limit yourselves to ONE planet. I think Souls did this and I think it was smart. Perhaps the universe of your forum is so young that space travel hasn't been invented yet? Whatever the reason, you should pick one planet (probably Earth) and stick with it. While planets like Namek and New Vegeta and The Omega Collective are great, it ICly divides a group that is already considerably small. This reduces character interaction and increases the chance that new players will join the forum and then disappear because they couldn't engage in the story fast enough. 3) Engage your new members, IMMEDIATELY. If you expect them to settle in on their own, they will inevitably fade. Plot with them. You should encourage every "old" or "veteran" member and get to take one of the newbies under their wing or something. So many players had registered in Awakening, only to fade. I'm talking about characters like Chef (whom joined at a bad time), Ruculi, that Sasuke character, etc. I realize most of them probably had personal reasons for leaving, but, because this is a recurring trend I observed, I am led to believe something must be done to actively stop this. I don't want to come off as arrogant or anything, but as soon as Shun reached out to me, I immediately found a way to integrate him into my story. Would Shun have stuck around for as long as he did if I hadn't? There's no way to know, I guess? Every time a new member joins, I literally went out of my way to try and indulge them. It wasn't an idle comment in the cbox, I PMed them about it and started plotting. Honestly, the only reason I hadn't approached Kaneki yet is cause I had my hands full, and all the other new players started out in different planets. 4) The Power-Level system doesn't work. Not for this forum, and not for any forum. You could "improve" it many times, but it will always have that inherent error. It transforms the forum into a numbers game. To be honest, I liked Empire's method a lot better with stats. It was much more flexible. With that said, that is just a discretely less imposing numbers game. It's still a numbers game. Unfortunately, Empire didn't last long, so we'll never know how far the system would have held. My suggestion is to develop a new system where PL and stats becomes irrelevant. I know PL is a big thing in Dragon Ball, but if you decide to keep the Dragon Ball theme, I think you'll need to curve many things and just make it your own. You can use Dragon Ball as the platform for your forum, but tweak the elements in the game so it works, not so it's "consistent" with the manga. Your goal? Discourage "grinding". "Training threads" should be a thing of the past. People shouldn't have to dedicate entire threads to the prospect of earning power or learning a technique. It becomes a chore and repels players who don't have the time to commit with the forum for as long as others, because they know their character will never be relevant. Every thread made by the players should be geared towards furthering a story, or some kind of conspiracy, not give them an advantage over others. Challenges? In a world where you don't level up or farm for zeni, it may sound like utopia, but it isn't. One of the most fundamental parts of gaming is to create a sense of progression and accomplishment. In Awakening, players get that sense by making zeni threads and finally spending that zeni on the item they were working for. They get that sense by grinding for power-level, unlocking transformations, and overwhelming their opponents. However, how will you address this in your new forum if you remove the PL-Zeni System? That is the key to your success. Perhaps players can attain new exotic items, like Aon's Cloak which allowed Kurosanai to hide his PL like an android. Of course, in this case, the cloak would mask their presence -not the PL. 5) Staff dependency and NPCs. Probably one of your most challenging issues. Staff will burn themselves out if the forum depends heavily on NPC characters or NPC-led sagas. Furthermore, being "Graderr" must have been the most stressful job they ever had. I might have had more to point out, but I forgot now so I'll stop here. Also, I will add a link to that forum I worked on during WODR. Hopefully it will be useful or inspire any new ideas. oneskyforums.proboards.com/

I was a member on the first world of dragonball. I watched it grow into number 2, and number 3. Then it became several other forms of WOD and finally found its stride with WODR.
Ten years next week. Ten long years of dragonball style role play. I started as a twelve year old with hardly any writing quality and built myself up to what I am today.
I say all of this because all of what Nam said is right on the money. And also explains why Awakening is called a spawn of World of Dragonball. There are so many unique aspects built into Awakening. The core of it however, is all what WOD was. It uses the same system, similar grading and attack systems. Similar applications and acceptance requirements. It even made similar choices in late game to change the system. It is very much a child of WOD. But is any child identical to their parent? No, no many are very different in fact. This site took many liberties that made it better. That said you can't deny that functionally and visually it takes after the site most of us came from. If Maxxie had put a copyright on his creation we would all be sued xD
Thank you for posting guys. I will take all of this to heart in the next one. Lets keep making each one better than the last.

One thing I can say we seemed to fail in is that we never helped push characters to good or evil. That is not to say having a conflicted character is bad but we failed to provide flash points where someone was truly on one side or another. There was a lot of grey and at times it seemed people were afraid to commit.

It makes me happy to see the comments here and glad to see that people enjoyed themselves. Like anything, there is always room for improvement regardless of what was changed or fixed. With all rp sites being evolving communities I am sure there is no perfect formula, just continues attempts to do things the "best" way. In short, I think we did well, but of course we would have done nothing without members to support us. As right as I think we are to end Awakening, I will miss what we all have built here. To all the members of Awakening and all the members that have ever been part of this site, I want to thank you for the fun times and enjoyable stories. I will miss the day to day jabber in the cbox, but you all have my Skype so I definitely hope we keep in touch.
