((Sorry its been a while, hopefully I can keep up a post at least once a week))
Tenshi had been spending most of her time in Central City lately. She'd stopped going to Mount Paozu, on her twice-daily trips for some fresh air. The Valkyrie had been replacing that time with doing other necessary things to get her life together, such as clothes shopping, buying food, and upgrading to a better apartment. Now that she had a job, she could support herself in something more than just a one room studio, and can stock her fridge with more than just instant ramen and bottled water.
Ironically, the job that Tenshi had got was at a noodle shop, about fifteen minutes from her new apartment (thirty from her old one). It was three buildings down from her friend Kit's dojo, and meant she could easily access his dojo before or after work. It was very convenient, and all together made life a little more worth living.
Ever since Tenshi had met Kit, things had been different. She'd felt less depressed, less inclined to drink, and most importantly, more motivated to actually get out of bed. She knew that the human man wouldn't accept any help, but part of the reason that she'd got her job was to give Kit some money to further renovate his dojo. It had already come such a long way from what it was, she couldn't wait to see the finish product.
With a click, Tenshi's attention was caught by the washing machine. She walked over, black bell bottoms swishing against each other, her white t-shirt tight against her torso. Opening the lid, she removed her soaking, but new, clothes, and replaced them into the dryer. She set the timer, and looked down at herself. It wasn't work ready just yet. Actually, all she needed was to put on a different shirt. She knew just the one, too, and sprang over to her dresser. To her disappointment, the shirt wasn't in there. Thinking back, she realised that she had just bought it yesterday, so it must be in the dryer now. She settled with a V-cut purple long sleeve shirt. Slipping this on, she stepped into her black work shoes, left the apartment and locked the door.
The walk (Tenshi chose not to draw too much attention to herself) to the noodle shop was uneventful, and as she pushed open the doors to a small clang, she was met by the gruff, cheerful voice and happy smile of Nodu, the store owner.
"Tenshi! A beautifur day today, isn't it?"
The woman smiled back to her boss, and returned the greeting, remarking that there was not a single cloud in the sky. Nodu smiled again. He had an interesting face, wrinkled and yellow skinned, but somehow...fair. His eyes were practically two diagonal eyes, and his receding hair almost wasn't there. He had a wispy thin moustache to the left and right of his nose, and a long goatee which he typically kept braided. Today it was as such. Nodu motioned to Tenshi to begin setting up the tables, and she got along to it.
While Tenshi was flipping over chairs, and rearranging tables, there was the typical clamour of pots pans and spoons in the back kitchen. Nodu was loud when it came to preparing the kitchen for lunch time, but he was very efficient. Although the cacophony sounded as if he was throwing, dropping, banging pots together, and tossing pans at the wall, really it was the sound of them landing in the exact spot he needed them, and then using already placed kitchen utensils as bumpers to place other ones where they go. It made Tenshi laugh a little at the conduct, and she turned back towards her task.
Kitchen prepared, tables cleaned, napkins, forks and spoons set, Tenshi grabbed her black serving apron behind the counter wall, and waited for her first customer of the day. Service wasn't typically slow, as the shop was a little hole-in-the-wall that most people passed by. But those who did come swore by the service, telling friends and family alike that the food is delicious, possibly the best they've had. Every customer they had was a regular, and Nudo knew them all by name. As humans and aliens alike filed in through the day, Tenshi could hear the short man speaking to them behind the counter.
"Good morning Shinya, how is the wife? And Pan, so rovery to see you! I assume you want the bread bowr? Ocha, Koocha, good to see the two of you hanging in there! The beutifur Amai, and the rittre Satoo, come in come in!"
And the longer that she worked there, the more and more people would recognize Tenshi. They began greeting her, Tenshi-San, sometimes Tenshi-Sama, held conversations, asked her to sit down. It was an enjoyable experience for Tenshi, who'd always felt sort of outcast, almost like a clown.
Whenever Tenshi thought like this, she would always be reminded that she did actually used to work in a travelling circus. Sometimes she wished she could go back, other times she was glad right where she was. Still others, she wasn't sure what she wanted. The Valkyrie was certain she'd find her way back there. But how much had everyone changed? Surely they would still remember her, being winged made you quite unforgettable. But would they be different from when she had left? She certainly was. Tenshi wasn't even sure she could be a trapeze artist anymore. Physically she could, yes, but wanting to...
It was the last few minutes of the day, and Tenshi was snapped out of her reverie by the chiming of the door. Nodu was in the kitchen prepping the cleaning, and so Tenshi was left at the counter.
The man who had walked in looked just like an average human. Brown hair, brown eyes. Lightly muscled, wearing a t-shirt and jeans. Tenshi hadn't seen him before, and he looked a little lost. Instead of going to the counter to order, he sat down, looking around at the odd painting here and strange wood carving there. Tenshi stepped from behind the counter, pad and pencil in hand.
"Good evening sir. I'm afraid that we're close to closing, so most items on the menu aren't available at the moment, but you're welcome to stay until Nudo-Sama and I leave. What can I get you?"
The man looked at Tenshi briefly, before looking out the door, then back. "I, uh, I'll just have water. I'm actually, uh, waiting on someone. Sorry for any inconvenience," he added hurriedly. Tenshi shook her head.
"Its not a problem. I'll be back with two pitchers and a cup."
She swept into the kitchen, swinging doors swooshing shut behind her. "Mr. Nudo, we have one last customer."
Nudo stuck his head up somewhere near the back of the kitchen by the sinks. "Aright, I'rr try to work a rittre bit srower, give them some time. What'd they need?"
"Just some water."
"You know where the pitchers are, Tenshi-San."
Rummaging around, her hands grasped two pitchers, while the other grabbed a cup. She walked to the ice-machine, filling up one pitcher with ice, and the other with water from the dispenser beside. Carefully, she held them upright, opening the swinging doors with her back, an putting them on to the table in front of the stranger.
"There you are, sorry for the wait. If you need anything, just let me know." She said this as she poured a bit of ice into the cup, finishing it off with water. The man mumbled his thanks, eyes kept down, and took a sip of water, putting it back on the table.
An hour passed, uneventful, the man looking at the door about every fifteen minutes. Then another half hour finished. Tenshi noticed a sudden lack of light from behind her; Nudo had shut off the kitchen lights. He came through the swinging doors, nodding at Tenshi. He then turned towards the stranger.
"Its time to crose up shop. You can reave those there, I wirr get them tomorrow." The brunette nodded, pushing the three glass objects together, before standing, exiting the building. Tenshi and Nudo followed, and Nudo locked the doors. Tenshi looked up at the white and black sign, reading the letters like she did every night after work. "Nudo's Noodles". She nodded to the proprietor of the shop, and headed back towards her apartment. Normally, this late at night, she didn't mind flying, and actually enjoyed the chance to air out her feathers, but as she took a few steps, she noticed that the man was walking that way too.
"Coming this way?" He jumped a little when she addressed him, looking at her, then nodding. She nodded back, stopping to let him catch up. She easily matched her gait, and walked a few paces in silence.
"I'm sorry whoever didn't show up."
He shrugged before replying. "Its really nothing." He turned his head a little away from Tenshi. Noting that he clearly didn't want to talk, Tenshi kept her silence. A few blocks later, the man broke it.
"Your wings. Do they really work?"
Of course, the inevitable question about her wings. Tenshi didn't mind it now so much as she had when she'd first got to Earth. She answered as politely as possible. "Yes, they do. I was born with them, though I don't know if they're a genetic anomaly, or if I'm simply of a different species." She knew with a ninety-nine percent certainty that the latter was true, but didn't really care to clarify. After all, what if she was wrong? The man nodded again, something that he was apparently extraordinarily good at. They walked on in silence until they got to Tenshi's apartment. Not wanting to take any chances, Tenshi made to keep going, but the man turned towards the building.
"Well, this is where I live." Tenshi nodded, raising her hand. "Goodnight."
"Goodnight."
He turned back towards the door, punching in the keycode to get in, and left her sight. Tenshi watched for a second, before going one block down the street, spreading her wings, and taking to the air.
Tenshi had been spending most of her time in Central City lately. She'd stopped going to Mount Paozu, on her twice-daily trips for some fresh air.
