“I’m not exactly sure what it is I’m looking at Purgot.” Ninjin stared up at the… spaceship was being generous. The Saiyan and the four-armed alien were on a mission together, one by choice the other not-so-much. Ninjin had insisted that Purgot Bulba join him and thus Purgot Bulba had. It was hard to argue with the Super Saiyan’s power. Together they had booked passage on a bounty hunters ship, following a lead. Ninjin, disguised as his masked alter-ego Syn, stood looking out of the viewport on the bridge. Purgot Bulba had acquired information that led them to suspect that the Saiyan boy that Ninjin was after was aboard that ship somewhere…. Though again ship was putting it nicely. Size was not an issue for the monstrosity, but it was very… spherical, and there seemed to be no end of metal jutting out the sides of it. There was no telling for sure what was inside. Ninjin hoped it was his son, but he was not about to let on to Purgot that the Saiyan child he had been after for weeks was his relative, let alone his son. To Purgot his we simply Syn, and it was a mystery to the alien and the rest of Omega what race Syn was. Though they had felt his power every now and then. They were far enough away from Omega now that Ninjin felt it was okay to let loose and be in his Super Saiyan form, though with his heavy armor and mask on it simply appeared as if he was incredibly powerful.
“Are you sure this is the right location” The voice came out distorted through the filter in his mask. Was this truly the location that Purgot’s info had led them to? It seemed like a giant piece of floating debris. There where lights blinking on and off all around it, but Ninjin supposed that could be simply the things power refusing to die. Still he trusted the shadow broker.

”If I’m being completely honest, no. If I’m lying to keep you from ripping me in half, then yeah, I’m one hundred percent sure this is the location that we’re looking for. They call it the Heart of Gold.” Purgot tried to keep the fear out of his voice. He really didn’t like the effect that this man, this perpetual mask that called itself Syn had on him. Usually he was a brave person, usually. But looking at Syn’s mask was like looking at the face of death. This man would kill him someday. He had a feeling about that. Purgot was no weakling himself, but he could barely stand in the presence of Syn without feeling like he was being slowly pushed away. That’s the effect that the…whatever race he was had on the Besa. Purgot could sense that there was a lot of power in the Heart of Gold, though whether it was one person, a bunch of people, or the ship itself he couldn’t really tell. Anything was possible, but he was really, really hoping that he wasn’t leading Syn into a trap. The masked man would kill everyone on board and then save him for last.
”Listen, I need to ask a favor of you. Whatever goes down in there, please try to refrain from killing me? You’re a lot stronger than me, I don’t want to be collateral in your search for this child. You understand that my life is important to me, right?” He spoke at the mask, but he couldn’t tell what Syn was thinking. The mask was unreadable, like a certain book series regarding a number of colors.
A tractor beam launched out of the Heart of Gold and latched onto the ship that they were taking passage on.
”Well, whether we like it or not, we’re going to find out exactly what is on that ship.” Purgot said, his voice clear of any fear. He had trained his voice to be clear of fear at all times. He just wished he could have trained his mind the same thing.

Ninjin chuckled at Purgot’s first response. There was something endearing about the fat four-armed alien. He was honest, even if it would put him at odds at those around him. It was an admirable trait that few in the universe shared. He also had a sense of humor that Ninjin had been sorely missing in his life since his son had been kidnapped and taken away from him. Maybe that was the reason that Ninjin demanded that Purgot come with him on this lead. Maybe it was to keep the fat alien from selling him out or stabbing him in the back like countless others, though Ninjin wasn’t sure he would. It was hard to get an honest read on Purgot, despite his honest nature. Ninjin’s power dwarfed anyone he let it fully out near. Even the Kais themselves. It was not something to be embarrassed about to fear the power that Ninjin put out, rather… common sense.
So he wasn’t sure if they were in the right location. The Heart of Gold was supposed to be a spaceship, but the thing in front of them was… something certainly. Ninjin turned back towards Purgot, who seemed nervous just being in his presence. Despite his appearance and awesome power Ninjin had never killed anyone who hadn’t attacked him first, or who didn’t threaten someone else. The rumors that had been spread of Syn had been done so carefully through some of Lilith’s old contacts by calling in final favors. It had worked, obviously. Purgot then did something that surprised Ninjin. He asked him to spare him.
“Of course I’m not going to kill you Purgot. Just be sure to stay out of the way if what we find in there is hostile, or insists on keeping the Saiyan child. No matter what that is both of our priorities. You, me, and the child all walk out of there unharmed and I will see you made a very rich man Purgot. You will have a friend in m-” The ship rocked. A tractor beam had shot out from the thing out the viewport and had locked onto them. The bounty hunter and his small crew began to race around trying to drag them out of it but Ninjin and Purgot both knew the truth. Ninjin nodded at his companion’s brave words. The Saiyan had already died and come back. His was the power of gods and he truly feared nothing. He could understand his companions concern though. The alien would be safe with him however.
The ship rocked. They were inside.

”Well…this is unexpected.” Purgot couldn’t really understand what was going on. The ship was hollow. It looked like there was going to be a lot more to it than there was. Sitting in the middle of the room was what looked like an old man, with a box in front of him. Purgot’s first thought made him sick, and he looked to Syn, though the mask was again, unreadable. Syn just shook his head, so clearly he had thought the same thing as Purgot, that the child’s head was going to be in the box. Purgot took another look; clearly the box was too flat to contain a head.
”Where’s the child? And what the hell is this thing?” Purgot spoke without thinking, a habit that most Besa share. The old man chuckled, and gestured at the box in front of him. Purgot started to move when Syn stuck out his arm and blocked the path. Purgot looked over at him, inquisitively. It seemed like their only option was going up to the old man and seeing exactly what he was doing, and getting information on why exactly Purgot was told there would be a child here.
Purgot took another look around the ship. It looked larger on the inside than it was on the outside, but that would be impossible. But there was something else concerning the four armed alien. How exactly were they tractor beamed if the old man was the only one in the ship. As far as he could sense, the old man was the only one here. Something weird was happening, and he would have to wait and see how it played out. Clearly Syn was going to need to take point on this one.

Ninjin stood and walked over to the airlock. It was clear that they were not escaping the tractor beam’s pull, and despite the bounty hunter and his team’s effort, the ship continued its forward momentum into what they suspected to be the Heart of Gold. When they came to a rest with a hiss the airlock slid open. Purgot quickly shuffled past him and out the airlock and looked around with confusion. Ninjin stepped out and did the same.
Ninjin could only nod in affirmation of his fat friend’s exclamation. It was indeed unexpected, though nothing had exactly been expected in the first place. Though if anything had, this certainly wouldn’t have been it. An old man sat alone in the center of the ship on a platform that seemed to have just enough room for all three men and the thing causing the uncomfortable silence between the three. A box. At first Ninjin’s heart leapt into his throat. Was Azuki’s head in the box? No… the box was to small for that. Purgot shot him a look and Ninjin just shook his head. There was no way of him knowing what was in there, no matter how great his power. It wasn’t like he had x-ray vision.
Purgot blurted out his words and underneath his mask Ninjin gritted his teeth. It was usually bad form to just give away your hand in the very beginning of the negotiation. Now the old man knew what it was they had come looking for, if he hadn’t known already. Still Ninjin got a very uneasy feeling from the old human in the center of the room. Or at least Ninjin thought he was human, he could be a very old Saiyan or some other humanoid alien. Perhaps if Purgot had known how important the child was to him he wouldn’t have led with giving away their hand. The old man chuckled and gestured to the box and Ninjin’s heart rose again. The box was too big for a head. At least a whole one. Metal creaked as Ninjin clenched his armored fist. Purgot began to move towards the man but Ninjin stopped him. There was something he really didn’t like about what was going on here. This felt like a trap, and he had been in more than his fair share of traps.
The old man chuckled once again and rose from his chair and motioned to the box. It flipped open without him having to touch it and Ninjin was startled at what it was, or at least what it appeared to be. A board game. The shock on the Saiyan’s face would have perfectly matched that on Purgot’s. What in the hell was going on here?
“If you want your answers, you have to play the game….” The mysterious old creature’s high-pitched voice mysteriously said. No, that was it. That was the final straw. Ninjin’s Ascended Super Saiyan form activated all around him and his aura pulsed with golden energy. The change in aesthetics was all contained within his armor, but the feel of his power was unmistakable.
“I will not be subject to your games.”
“Then you will know nothing. My kind does not break under torture I can assure you Ninj-”
“That’s enough. We’ll play. But when we win we get answers.” The creature knew far more than he was letting on, and he had the Saiyan in a bind.
“Yes, that is the deal.” The blue alien stepped away to the side of the table and two comfortable looking pod chairs floated over and scooped up Ninjin and Purgot and brought them to the table. The board game in front of them was one black square surrounded by tiny white squares on the side. A domed piece of glass was on the center. Ninjin looked from it to Purgot. The suit of armor shrugged. He had gotten into worse. He thought.

Purgot watched as the box flipped open, the layout quickly changing to that of a board game. He looked over at Syn again, a confused look apparent on his rotund face. What exactly was going on here? They were dragged all the way out to this location to play chess? Why in the galaxy would someone bring them out here to play a board game? It just didn’t add up.
”If you want your answers you have to play the game…” Purgot couldn’t exactly be sure if he was speaking to Syn or himself. The old man was not looking at either of them in particular. He waved his hand and the airlock slammed shut behind them. Well, now it was just the two of them and the old man in the room. Purgot had his own reasons for coming out here with Syn, the least of which being he was actually interested in finding this child, and learning more about the strange, strange man that had hired him. There were other reasons too, ones that he didn’t let on.
And then Syn got angry and Purgot flew backwards against the door that had just slammed shut as Syn’s power skyrocketed. Purgot looked on in horror, hoping that his friend remembered his promise to not be the cause of Purgot’s death here.
”I will not be subject to your games”
Syn sounded very angry. He had never explained to Purgot exactly why he was searching for this child, but his voice and demeanor got very desperate when he was speaking about it. It didn’t take a genius, which Purgot liked to think that he was, to figure out there was more to Syn and this child then simply wanting to locate him. There was a deeper connection.
”Then you will know nothing. My kind doesn’t break under torture I can assure you Ninj-“
Purgot watched as Syn seized up and cut off the old man. Clearly he was about to say something that Syn didn’t want Purgot to hear. There was no other reason that he would cut off the old man so suddenly. But what exactly was about to be said. Ninj? What could possibly finish that word? That sentence? Was Syn really a ninja? But why wouldn’t he want Purgot to know about that? There was no harm in being a ninja.
”That’s enough. We’ll play. But when we win we get answers.” Purgot looked up at Syn, while still sitting on the ground, having been thrown from his force of power. The masked man was agreeing for Purgot to play without consulting with him first. If Purgot’s life was going to be on the line, for who knew what the game would entail, he would have liked to have at least been asked about it.
”Yes, that is the deal.” Purgot watched as a chair appeared underneath him and lifted him over to the table where the board game was now situated. Syn was sitting right beside him.
”Wait wait wait. I never agreed to this.” Purgot felt Syn stiffen once again, and felt the cold gaze of the mask fall upon him. ”I’m only saying…this game…its not potentially fatal is it? I mean I’m all for playing a game or two, but usually I know the rules before I play. Isn’t that…you know…usually how games are played? Syn, I’m not saying I won’t help you, but if my life is on the line…I gotta think about this, you know?”
”ah…so the fat one doesn’t know….” The old man let out a wizened laugh, and looked from Syn to Purgot. ”Purgot Bulba….what a unique creature you are. A Besa that doesn’t hate people. Doesn’t eat everything you find. Doesn’t kill outright. A cultivated Besa….so unusual. And a chef too…Why won’t you play my little game?”
It was Purgot’s turn to stiffen. How did this old man know so much about him? He looked to Syn again, the cold mask unreadable. He really didn’t want this little old man letting out all of his secrets to his employer, but he also didn’t want to lose his life here. This was not going to be a good situation for him no matter what.
”You seem to know a lot about me. And Syn here it seems. But we don’t know anything about you, other than what was reported to me. So I’m not playing your little game until I know that both of us are walking out of here with our lives.”
”I can’t promise you that. But you will play. You have no choice.”
Purgot gulped. Shit.

Ninjin hadn’t realized that when he had transformed he had thrown his compatriot in this ordeal against the wall. If Purgot could see through his mask he would see Ninjin debating whether or not to apologize. No. Syn was a character that did not do such a thing. No matter what. Purgot being here complicated things, especially since the old man knew more than Ninjin wanted him to. If Purgot knew that Ninjin was Ninjin Hattori could he trust the man? The old alien was playing games with them and they had no choice but to play along, because Ninjin had no choice but to play along. He just hoped that Purgot wasn’t smart enough to put together that Ninj- had been the start of his name. If they survived whatever was coming perhaps he would tell Purgot the reason he was playing with his life. It was not out of savagery or barbarity, but love for his son, a son that he had never met. One that had been kidnapped from him. If Purgot had family he would understand.
Purgot began to protest and Ninjin stiffened. If his child’s life hung in the balance the alien refusing to go along with the old creature’s games could jeopardize Azuki’s life. That was not something that Ninjin could allow. He turned his gaze towards the fat four-armed alien. Purgot’s words began to stumble out of his mouth. So what if the game was fatal, he had the might of gods on his side. What did he have to fear? There was no power in the universe that Ninjin had ever felt that was stronger than his own. Purgot should and could take comfort in that. Still in the end he said he would think about helping Ninjin. The old man began speaking once more.
The words that the high-pitched voice spoke were interesting, and of Purgot’s race. Honestly Purgot Bulba was the only member of his race that Ninjin had ever met, and had been curious about them. The old being’s words seem to place them as barbaric and carnivorous, with insatiable appetites. Was it true that Purgot Bulba had a natural desire to eat everything around him? Was he perhaps at this moment curious as to what both he and the old man tasted like? It was an unusual thought. They were in an unusual situation. Purgot made another brave stand that was shut down almost instantly by ominous words. They were going to play, but the old man couldn’t guarantee their lives. Purgot gulped audibly and Ninjin turned his attention to the game board.
“How does it work?”
The old being floated over and waved a big sleeved glove over the board. Two pieces, one black and one white, appeared.
“The rules are simple, roll the dice, doubles takes a second turn, the one to reach the final first wins.”
Dice appeared in Ninjin’s hand.
“Royalty shall go first, hmm?” Ninjin glared at him through the mask. There was too much that he knew about the former crown-prince. It appeared as if he and Purgot had no choice but to play. Ninjin turned and rolled the dice. Four and a two. There were forty spaces in all, ten on each side of the board. The white piece moved ahead six spaces and the orb in the middle began to swirl with grey energy.
Do not fear, all is well, just stay calm, in your trip through hell. The demons you fight, the ones you fear, aren’t those inside, they’re the ones right here.
The words seemed to swirl out of the orb and into the air in front of them. The room itself began to grow dark and dim and the only light in the room seemed to be coming from the platform they were standing on, and the gameboard itself. Ninjin’s brow furrowed underneath the helmet. What in the world could that mean? Suddenly the overpowering smell of sulfur began to burn at his nostrils and a deep demonic laughter filled his ears.
“Purgot… stay close.” Ninjin rose from his chair and over towards the obese alien. He had promised this would not result in his death, and the Saiyan had every intent to keep that promise. They just needed to win this silly game, and then perhaps he would finally get Azuki back.

Purgot listened in fear as the old man explained the rules. They seemed simple, far too simple. He looked down at the board in wonder. Two figurines had appeared, as if by magic, on the board. One was white and one was black.
”Royalty shall go first, hmm?” The little old man laughed at his words and a die had appeared in Syn’s hand. Royalty? What exactly was that supposed to mean? Purgot found himself once again looking out of the corner of his eyes at Syn, wondering just exactly who was the man underneath the mask.
The old man’s words still echoed in his head. He hated being reminded of the race he came from. The desire to feast, the insatiable appetite that came with being a Besa. He had to restrain with all he had not to attack every single person he came across. It wasn't a surprise that his people were solitary. They were the embodiment of gluttony, but he never saw himself that way. He just wanted to live and let live, a trait that didn't find its way across his people.
Though they were mostly unknown, so not a lot of other alien species saw them for what they were. Humans were hated by them, having been hunted by them for their arms. Having a pair of Besa arms on your wall was a human tradition, like having a deer mounted. They saw the species as savages. Or they had, many years ago. Purgot didn't really know what the humans thought of them now, they hadn't interacted in generations.
Purgot watched as Syn took his turn, rolling the dice. The eerie message appeared in the little dome, and the lights in the room they were in dimmed. The smell of sulfur wafted in, and Purgot looked around. The little old man had disappeared.
”Purgot…stay close.” Syn didn’t have to repeat himself. Purgot wasn’t going to go anywhere. He turned his head as the sound of flapping could be heard. The room had started to grow even darker as the light from the board game receded, until only an area of about five feet was lit.
”I don’t know if now would be a good time to mention that I’m not exactly a huge fan of the dark…” Purgot had meant it as a joke, but it didn’t come off that way. His voice was trembling, and he swore to himself. He didn’t want to appear weak to his employer, and he thought he had the “keeping fear out of my voice” thing down.
A screech echoed in the chamber, and Purgot looked over at Syn.
”We’re not alone here. Can you sense them? I don’t know what’s wrong with me, but I can’t. I can only hear the screeching.”
Chef folded the lower pair of his arms behind his back. This was going to be a fight, he was sure of it. Why, oh why, did he have to be risking his life for this child?
”You’re lucky I like you, Syn.” Was all he could mutter before the massive winged creature dropped in front of him. He licked his lips, and mentally scolded himself. That was not the proper response, but still…perhaps just a bite.

The darkness crept in close around them till there was little room left in the light save for a five foot area. The distinct sound of wings flapping could be heard, and they were definitely not a birds wings. There was something distinct about the way a leathery wing hit the air that Ninjin had come to know after spending so much time around the dragon Bubebolos. Purgot made mention that he was not the biggest fan of the dark and Ninjin grunted in response. There was a primal fear in most things of a fear of the dark. What you couldn’t see, well that had a much better chance of hurting you than most things. Still for all the theatricality Ninjin felt little reason to be scared, except for the life of his companion. His power was godly, surely the old man felt that. This game would be nothing. Purgot’s voice sounded afraid, and the screeching that filled the interesting sphere no doubt did nothing to help.
“We’re not alone here. Can you sense them? I don’t know what’s wrong with me, but I can’t. I can only hear the screeching.” Ninjin reached out with his sense but got nothing in return. It was possible that this place had a way of masking ki signatures. That wasn’t it… he felt Purgot plain as day right beside him. Perhaps the “demons” were android contraptions, or perhaps they had some other way of masking their signatures.
“No. They’re blocked.” It meant that they had no way of knowing how strong whatever was out there in the dark was. Purgot put two of his arms behind his back and cracked the knuckles of two of his other hands. The alien was no slouch in the power department compared to the average alien in the galaxy. There was a distinct possibility that he could hold his own in a fight just based on raw talent and power alone. If not, well he had Ninjin to rely on.
“You’re lucky I like you Syn.” The alien commented wearily. Ninjin was touched, though he was almost sure that it was sarcasm, as Purgot had been forced into this whole thing against his will. Then a massive demon dropped out of the sky right in front of him. If Ninjin wasn’t mistaken he could have sworn Purgot licked his lips in response, but perhaps it was just his imagination stirred on by the words of the odd old alien from before. Still he didn’t have long to process it before he was tackled from the side by yet another of the massive demons. The tussled and turned through the air as Ninjin punched and kicked at the thing. It was impressively strong for whatever it was, and could take a hit from the Super Saiyan.
“Purgot! I think they’r- ” He got an elbow to the jaw and headbutted the creature between the eyes. It grunted in displeasure and Ninjin scowled at it. “Rude. I THINK THEY’RE SIMULATIONS!” It was the only thing that could explain how the demon he was wrestling could match his power. It bit into his arm and the razor sharp teeth bit through his armor as if it was paper and into the skin. Ninjin raised his hand and blasted the creature in the face knocking him off of him just as his body slammed against the floor of the Heart of Gold, if this really was the Heart of Gold. The wind was kicked out of him and he rolled over and gagged and coughed for air. A massive cloven hoof booted him in the side.
“ROLL THE DICE!!!” His body flopped against the floor and the demon was quick to catch up. Ninjin sprang to his feet and kicked the demon’s leg out from under him and hammed him into the ground with a downward punch.
“PURGOT YOU HAVE TO ROLL THE DICE!” Another demon appeared and socked Ninjin across the face. Was there going to be more and more of them until they could no longer fight them off?

Purgot felt Syn’s power surge again, and struggled to remain on his feet. The…whatever he was…needed to stop flexing his pure might in the vicinity of Purgot. He couldn’t really handle the massive fluxes in power that radiated off of Syn.
Syn confirmed that he couldn’t sense the things in the darkness either, and Purgot felt a shiver drip from the top of his spine to the bottom. If Syn, this huge power source right next to him couldn’t see what was out there, then no amount of guessing was going to tell them what they were facing off against.
Purgot gasped as one of them dropped out of the sky and tackled Syn to the ground. The masked man was fighting back against it, but it seemed that the monster was pretty evenly matched to him. That meant that they would destroy Purgot. He gulped and turned to face the one in front of him.
”I’m too old for this shit.”
Purgot charged up a ball of ki in his hand and thrust it out toward the demon in front of him. It took the hit to the chest and dropped to the ground, dead. Purgot looked over at the one fighting Syn, the powerful monster struggling against the demon, and then back at the one he had just dropped. He was confused. He was a lot, a lot weaker than Syn, but he had just killed one of the demons in one hit. How could something like that happen?
Another demon dropped out of the sky and into the same position the other one had just been in. Purgot walked up to it and it screeched at him, but didn’t attack him. Purgot looked again at Syn fighting the one on the ground. What was going on?
”ROLL THE DICE!” Purgot heard Syn scream out, and then Purgot realized why he could destroy them when Syn couldn’t, why they were fighting Syn so strongly when they wouldn’t even throw a punch at him. It’s because…it wasn’t Purgot’s turn. It was Syn’s. The demons were for Syn and Syn alone. So that’s how it was to be.
Purgot walked calmly over to the board and quickly rolled the dice, getting snake eyes. He gulped, and the demons faded away. That wasn’t good. He got another turn after this one, and if his turn was anything like Syn’s, he wasn’t going to enjoy it very much. The lights in the place grew brighter, and Purgot could see that everything was back to normal.
The black piece moved ahead two spaces.
Purgot Bulba, on a whim. Let’s find out, how well you swim.
”Syn, prepare yourself. I have a feeling we’re about to get very wet.”
He spoke, and could already feel the water rising above his ankles. He turned as the water quickly made it up to his waist. There was a fin, cutting the water towards him. He looked over at Syn, praying, praying he would keep his promise and not let Purgot die here.

Another demon bit deeply into Ninjin’s shoulder. The Saiyan’s armored fist came up and hammed against the bull-like skull of the winged demon until it let go. The he turned around and blasted the thing in the chest with a shirishiri cannon. There seemed to be no end to these demons, no matter how many he put down they seemed to come with even greater numbers, in even greater size, with even greater ferocity. It was all the Super Saiyan could do to fight them all at once, even with putting them down, even with his tremendous fighting skills. Purgot Bulba needed to roll the damned dice. Purgot evidently had rolled the dice as the demon that had just picked him up and dropped the Saiyan to be swallowed disappeared right as Ninjin was about to open his awaiting mouth. His arm was on fire from where the first demon had bit him and his shoulder was on fire from where the second one had. This game was going to be a lot more interesting and challenged than he had first imagined. Wounded but not defeated he hopped into the air and slowly rose towards the platform while the words from Bulba’s turn floated into the air. It targeted Purgot personally, and Ninjin was interested to see that while he was sporting wounds from the encounter with the demons the shadow broker was completely unscathed. Suddenly water began filling up the sphere. Purgot looked around nervously. "Syn, prepare yourself. I have a feeling we’re about to get very wet." Suddenly the water level leapt and leapt and it was soon at their ankles. Ninjin could swim, though he didn’t know how well he could do it with the armor on. Breathing was always an issue for the Saiyan. No matter how strong he was, he still had to breath. That left him with two options. He could drown and Purgot Bulba would never know he was Ninjin Hattori, or he could take the armor off and reveal himself, though perhaps he would die here anyway. A fin in the water caught his attention. Whatever it was was massive. Once again Ninjin heard the obese alien that he was with gulp loudly. This was a sticky situation. The water was already up to their waists. Something rammed the platform and it shook violently. Ninjin staggered slightly. “Purgot roll. Purgot roll.” Ninjin hissed the words. The fin appeared again, this time accompanied by more. At least three more. The water was up Ninjin’s armpits and rising. Time for choosing whether or not to take off the armor and reveal himself was quickly deteriorating. Soon they would be completely underwater, and Ninjin was curious as to how Purgot planned to roll the dice if it got all the way. Or what they both planned to do about those sea monsters if they proved to be as strong as the demons had been when it had been Ninjin’s turn. Soon the water rose above their heads and Ninjin screamed silently. His choice had been made for him, the water had moved to fast. With a silent goodbye he promised that once again he would return from Heaven and seek him out and he would not rest until he had done it. That’s when he noticed it. He could breath. He could breathe the water. Could Purgot? Moreover, did Purgot think he could deal with the sea monsters? They were terrifying. He needed to roll. Ninjin held out his right hand and steadied his grip with his left. Dozens of small balls of ki shot forth and collided with the sea monsters roughly, but more and more began to appear in the water. They seemed to ignore the Saiyan entirely and a sudden realization came to him. It was Purgot Bulba’s turn, not his.

The water went over their heads and Purgot’s gills opened, allowing him to breathe. He had a distinct feeling that without the gills that were now open on the sides of his throat, he would be drowning. Besas however were an aquatic species by nature.
That solved one problem, but there was still the matter of whatever was the rest of the creature whose fins were cutting the water moments ago. He looked around. He couldn’t see anything. Syn had mysteriously vanished in the moments between hissing at him to roll and the water surging above. Purgot looked up from where he swam, and figured that the water was probably covering the entirety of the inside of the Heart of Gold. Where the hell did that little wizened old man get to? There had to be more to this ship than was being let on.
He felt a nudge to his side, and his eyes cut sharply to the left, eying the creature that just bumped into him. It was massive, and calling it sharp toothed would be the underbite of the century.
It opened its mouth wide and Purgot quickly fired a ball of energy into it, though the creature seemed more amused than injured. Purgot swore to himself, and started swimming away from the creature, only to find out that there were two more behind him. They charged at him, and he dodged the first one only to be tackled by the second. He spun around in the water, and the first creature latched its massive mouth onto his side, completely enveloping his third arm. He screamed and summoned his spectral meat cleaver, shoving the hilt of it into the creature’s eye. It spat him out, and he realized he wasn’t going to survive this one, so he needed to roll as soon as possible. He dove down to where he remembered the game board being, as the creatures dove after him, colliding in the water, buying him some time.
”SYN!” He screamed into the water, trying to find out where his employer was. He didn’t want to roll the dice and have something bad happen like the airlock open when Syn wasn’t where he should be. But the shark like creatures were closing in fast, and he didn’t have time to worry about the masked man. He picked up the die and threw them in the water towards the game board, hoping they were weighted and would roll, but they acted as if they weren’t even in the water, and rolled an 11, a six and a five. The little black figure moved ahead eleven spaces, and the water quickly drained out of the room, the shark creatures nowhere to be seen.
Another turn for Bulba, another whim, Let’s find out who Nin….Syn chooses, you or him.
Purgot felt a chair force its way beneath him, and felt straps tighten around him. He struggled against them but couldn’t break free. He looked around and saw something that made him swear again. Across the room another chair had appeared, this one holding a small child. The Sayian child. A whirring noise started up and Purgot looked to his right. A massive buzz saw was slowly inching its way toward his side, another one mirroring it heading toward the child. The board game was gone, Syn standing in the middle of the room.
”Syn. Syn you’re not going to have time to save us both. He’s probably not real. The rest of these things haven’t been. SYN.” Purgot couldn’t keep the desperation out of his voice this time. Syn was going to have to make a choice. Choose between helping Purgot who was one hundred percent real, and helping out the child that he’d been searching for, who might be a simulation. Purgot’s life was on the line, and he didn’t like his odds. "SYN!"

Despite being able to breath within the simulated water it still filled his heavy armor with cold. His breathing was ragged, his mind unable to believe that he was breathing when all around him was filled with nothing but water. Moreover the water was quite dark. Ninjin had lost sight of Purgot Bulba somewhere in the mix. This ship was something amazing. The things that Ninjin had targeted before had vanished in the dark cold abyss that now surrounded them. The old man was nowhere to be seen, though not that Ninjin could see to begin with. The things were targeting Purgot and not him, but if anything that gave him less comfort. Was the alien drowning? He knew next to nothing about Purgot’s species. For a moment the Saiyan thought he could hear his fake name being called out, but it faded quickly. Hopefully Purgot was strong enough to keep himself alive.
Suddenly the water was draining from the sphere and Ninjin felt the support of the water drain as well. His body touched down at the bottom of the ship and he breathed a sigh of relief. The alien had survived and had managed to roll the dice. Hopefully any injuries he had sustained were not fatal. Ninjin’s shoulder and arm screamed with pain from where the demons had bit him but he would live. That’s when he looked up to see the inky black words floating in the air. What the hell did that mean?
Suddenly he was standing in the middle of the room. Purgot was sitting on one side in a chair. On the other side was a small child. A small tail wrapped down the leg of the chair and Ninjin’s heart nearly stopped in his chest. Was it… Could it be? Were they at the end of the game? A whirring sound snapped his attention back to reality. Buzz saws. They began to move towards the necks of both the child and Purgot. Purgot began to speak and Ninjin just barely heard him, on the edge of his hearing. The saws began to move.
Was the child his son? Normally he would be skeptical of something like that, but then weirder things had happened in his life. Conri Lane had turned out to be on Mement Mor. That had been a longer shot than that being his real child. Still… it did not feel as if it was really Azuki. There was something… not right. Ninjin had been searching for his child for so long, but this was not what he thought it would feel like, and the child was nothing like what he thought Azuki would look like. Purgot’s voice could not miss the desperation. Then again the old man apparently knew quite a bit about Ninjin, but not all. Ninjin held his hands out and both buzzsaws fought but ground to a halt. The Super Saiyan ripped them from the wall.
“I would not let you die after my promise Purgot.” Ninjin walked over to the table in the center of the room, the one that had formed when he ripped the buzzsaws off the wall. The child began to cry and shriek with a high-pitched wail that hurt the ears. Ninjin gritted his teeth and grabbed the dice. That was no son of his. If it had been. If he had known in his heart that that had been Azuki, he would have saved his boy. Regardless of what that had meant for Purgot. Still he was happy that he didn’t have to. He rolled the dice. They began to float and spin in the air.
You’re not playing, by the rules. See what happens, to you fools. Your punishment then, former prince. It’s a shock, not a rinse.
The dice dropped and his piece advanced seven spaces. Onto the second side, onto the thirteenth spot.
Ninjin’s eyebrows barely just had enough time to raise in surprise before he felt the force of electricity rip through his metal suit and into his body. The first thing to lock up was his jaw, and his other muscles soon followed. His heart threatened to stop, and his vision grew dim. He wasn’t sure where the electricity was coming from, but it didn’t seem like it was going to stop. He had saved Purgot, but perhaps he had doomed himself.

Purgot watched as Syn dropped to the ground, spasming. He frowned as his employer twitched upon the ground, and started to walk toward him.
”Syn? What are you doing?”
Purgot took another step toward the prone man, who still lay on the ground twitching. He reached a hand out, but then a voice stopped him.
”I wouldn’t touch him right now, if I were you, Purgot.” The voice came from right behind him, and Purgot wheeled around. The voice had sounded similar to the old man’s but there was a different edge to it this time, something behind it that spoke volumes. The body was no longer the old mans, but a body that Purgot knew all too well.
”Pernicious. I should have figured that your ass would be behind this.” The figure that stood there was a tall, tall one, riddled with muscles. The body did not belong to a Besa, but a species that shared many of the same traits, what the Besa referred to as Alph. They resembled giant sharks as well, though the hammerhead variety. His name was Pernicious Trid, and he was a rival shadow broker, the only one who had more clients than Purgot himself.
”Well since your powerful prince here is incapacitated, I can use this time to explain some things to you. The first is that you have no idea what you’re doing. You think that you’re working for this simple man looking for….do you even know what you’re looking for? You think that it’s this innocent little boy but do you know WHO you are working for? You don’t. You never even took the time to learn who exactly this was. He said his name was Syn and you just took it at face value. Let me tell you who it is your working for. Let me show you the true face of who you’re fighting for.”
Pernicious took a step toward Syn, and Purgot stepped in front of him, putting the lower of his four arms behind his back. Pernicious laughed and batted Purgot into the wall with one of his massive arms. Purgot flew twenty feet and smacked against it.
”Did you really think that throwing yourself in front of me was going to stop me? You’re weak. You’ve always been weak. You will always be weak. Now…”
Pernicious walked over to Syn’s body and lifted it up by the collar. Syn was limp in his grasp, and Pernicious reached over and removed the helmet. Purgot gasped, and swore. Anger rose up in his throat but he swallowed it down.
”Ninjin Hattori. So. This entire time I’ve been trying to find a child for the prince of Sayians. All this time I’ve been working for him, and he couldn’t even share that rather important bit of information with me. I thought he was dead.”
Pernicious Trid laughed and threw Ninjin aside.
”This whole time and you had no idea that you were working for the crown prince. But you just took everything he said. You’re a fool Purgot. And it was so easy to manipulate you. I know exactly what Ninjin is looking for, and I know exactly where it is. But that’s information that I’m afraid that I can’t give you. I lead you out here so that I could do what I should have done such a long time ago. I can finally kill you. And disposing of the sayian crown prince will probably earn me a pretty penny too. But it’s mostly you that I want to get rid of, Purgot.”
Pernicious walked over to Purgot and kicked him in the chest, denting the wall and embedding Purgot into it. He chuckled and threw a fist, but Purgot charged out of the wall and tackled him, sending them both to the floor. Pernicious grunted and tried to punch at Purgot, but Purgot was already rolling out of the way, pushing off of the floor and powering up.
Purgot’s power skyrocketed and his arms grew larger, as did the crest on his forehead.
”Oh look, you’ve acquired a little party trick. What, are you trying to impress a mate? The only one here who could possibly be impressed by you is in a puddle over there in the corner. Once you’re dead, killing him is not going to be a problem at all. Look at him. Hmmm…you know what, maybe I’ll kill him first, since there is nothing you could possibly do about it.”
Pernicious started walking toward Ninjin, but was blasted in the back by a ball of energy. He fell to the ground, and Purgot smirked, having taken down the Alph. But Pernicious was back on his feet in no time at all, flying towards Purgot and throwing a fist. Purgot dodged out of the way, with no hope of actually blocking the attack, and Pernicious’s arm went through the wall. Purgot took the opportunity to send another blast at him, hitting him in the side. Pernicious ripped his arm out of the wall and pointed his hand at Purgot, sending a volley of energy at the Besa. Purgot flew away, but swore as he saw that the missiles were still following him. He flew toward the game board, hoping beyond hope that what he was about to do would work.
The missiles slammed into his back, hunching him over the game board. Pernicious laughed and slowly flew down next to Purgot.
”Well…you put up….not really any fight at all. Any last words?”
”None, I’ll let the game speak for me.”
”Huh?”
Purgot slumped over and the dice fell out of his hand, moving his piece forward three spots. The middle of the board swirled and then revealed words.
It’s Ninjin’s turn, bitch.
Pernicious’s eyes grew wide.

The pain was intense and was causing his muscles to cramp and tighten to the point that Ninjin found that he couldn’t control them any longer. His heart had stopped… hadn’t it? Regardless he could no longer feel it in his chest. His eyes were wide open and he found that he couldn’t blink. A deep voice called out, it sounded strangely like the old man’s but deeper and richer, with more of an edge. Purgot had begun to move towards him but the voice had halted the alien’s forward progress. Ninjin’s eyes remained locked wide opened as the energy continued to rip through him. The creature that had appeared was nothing like Ninjin had ever seen before, but then again all alien life was well… alien to him.
If Ninjin’s stunned form’s eyes could widen further they would have. Purgot spoke with recognition as he named the large alien. Then the alien spoke and Ninjin’s blood ran cold, despite the hot electricity still ripping through him. Somehow this Pernicious knew more than he was letting on, knew more than he should. Knew more than anyone should. The bigger of the two aliens made a move towards Ninjin’s prone figure. The more he spoke the more Ninjin knew that his secrets were not so secret to this Pernicious fellow. Somehow he knew who he was. Somehow he knew who Azuki was. He also had an apparent malicious history with Purgot. Ninjin desperately fought against the raging torrent that surged through him from an unknown source. Purgot was going to defend him. Try as he might the Saiyan couldn’t get a read on Pernicious’ power. The electricity was too much. How he was still conscious he wasn’t sure.
The bigger of the two aliens laughed at Purgot’s attempt at defending Ninjin and batted the four-armed Besa out of the way. The massive alien stomped over towards the Saiyan and lifted him into the air by the collar. Ninjin couldn’t do anything, but the electricity had turned off as soon as Pernicious had touched him. The creature’s fingers curled around his helmet and plucked it from his head with ease. The air filled his mouth and nostrils and felt stale. Purgot’s eyes widened and it was clear that he was angry with the revelation. His words solidified that. Yes Ninjin could have told him, but that risked so much. Hopefully the alien would understand. The grip around his neck tightened briefly and then suddenly his body was flying through the air and slammed into the floor, skidding for a few feet before coming to a stop. His fingers twitched slightly.
His anger and confusion rose all the higher as Pernicious continued to speak. How in the world could he know what it was he was looking for? There was only one… So who was it that had betrayed him, Lilith or Nasu? Ninjin’s fingers twitched further. Pernicious walked over to Purgot and began his assault of the alien. Ninjin’s fingers tightened into a fist. Purgot began to fight back, and even transformed into a different state, something that shocked the Saiyan. When the electricity had ripped through him it had turned off his Ascended Super Saiyan form, but slowly Ninjin clenched and unclenched his fingers.
Purgot put up a valiant fight but still Pernicious’ power was too great for him. It didn’t take long before Ninjin’s heart leapt to his throat, his body was recovering but it looked like he would not get there in time. Pernicious asked if Purgot had any last words and Ninjin wondered if he would use them to blame him for everything that had occurred. That’s when Ninjin noticed it. The alien had rolled. Pernicious’ eyes widened and he turned as Ninjin’s power spiked to its highest in his Ascended Super Saiyan form. The alien brought up his arm to block but it could do little to block the Super Saiyan’s might. Ninjin’s fist slammed through the alien’s chest and sparks and blue blood shot out from the wound. The Saiyan’s anger rose. He knew this creation. It belonged to one of his enemies. It was called a Life Model Decoy, and it was something developed by Obadiah Roxxon. Ninjin pulled his fist out of the alien’s chest cavity and turned to Purgot.
“I suppose we have a conversation to have, and new introductions. I’m Ninjin Hattori, and I’m looking for my son.”
