“Stop thinking like a human. Literal definitions don’t apply here. It’s all in the interpretation. Netherling logic resides in the hazy border between sense and nonsense.”
Netherlings are a race of Fae-like creatures that live not on another planet, but a pocket dimension called Rothkalin. They are the ruling class of creatures and a male-dominant society. They feed of the darker emotions and chaos of the world--the more powerful being able to create it simply from their presence. Pleasure and pain is a blurry line for them and more murders occur than natural death. The older families have a more humanoid appearance as well as wings while the lower class are almost reptilian in form. All have curling horns of some form and color, as well as markings upon their body that appear or are tattooed on upon their thirteenth birthday. The most powerful is their King who has survived on the throne for thousands of years and rules more through fear and terror than respect and love.
Many Netherlngs can live for hundreds of years. It's not often as most are killed well before that. Many of the stronger familes, or the weak ones that keep their heads down and stay out of the way, are the only ones to live so long. Kallen's family is the longest standing house, a truly fantastic feat. The have the ability to regrow limbs if they are strong enough. Smaller limbs like fingers can take a week while limbs like arms or some organs can take years. It is rumored that the only way to kill a Netherling is to cut off their head or rip out their heart. There are of course, simpler ways, but they do not often spread such speak around. Because of the darkness they consume, their hearts do not beat, but instead house the darkness inside of them. This makes halflings like Kallen (though she is the only living one) unique in their beating hearts.
Unlike many creatures in the universe, it is not their kai that they creature and use as weapons. Rather is is the darkness inside them that they twist and control.

:History:
Kallen's story doesn't start with her, but with her family. Many, many centuries ago, Dagur had three sons after a night with a Netherling woman of good blood. She died, but only after giving birth to triplets. Rowen, Besir, and Derrin. They ruled by his sides, his three Princes with special powers all their own. Rowen could entrap a victim in their mind, feeding off their emotions and energies until they dried up. Besir could control the blood in a person's body, making them his living puppets, often having them kill another before him. And Derrin could control another's mind absolutely. Over the years, the two elder brothers took women of Netherling blood. Kept in a harem, the woman were little more than high-class whores for them. Children were born, all sons. Rowen gave birth to Ilan and Aster; Besir to twins--Slate and Shale. It wasn't until a little over a hundred years ago that Derrin had a child. A girl of halfling blood. Blood that no one could identify, for Derrin gave proof that the mother had died shortly after the child was born. While this may mean nothing to others, it was an act of treason to the Netherling people. It diluted their bloodline and gave power to a race of creatures that was a mystery to even the most powerful of seers. Derrin was immediately sentenced to death, his daughter would die soon after. And die he did, his decimated body hung from the castle for a reminder to all of the consequences of his actions. The biggest surprise of all though was not the death of the infant.
But the fact that she was allowed to live.
No one knows quite why, though rumors spread through out the land. Had the seers seen something? Was the child born with powers that could rival her uncles? Her grandfathers? It was apparent from a young age that this child was different than the others. While she had the little fangs and pointed ears of a Netherlings, eyes that should have been gray were a bright teal. Two downy horns grew from her head, and baby wings fluttered on her back. Her skin had a soft flush to it though and inside her chest, her heart beat. Unlike all the girls born to the royal family, she wasn't sent off to the harem and her bloodline denounced. Instead, she was kept at the castle and raised by nannies like her uncles and cousins. It was no question that the child would grow to be a great beauty. If she survived that long, that was. After the announcement of her birth, her grandfather made no move to see her again until her thirteenth birthday. Her uncles visited her on and off, her cousins coming to stare at the child that was so different from them. Only Aster kept company with the girl, watching over her like a big brother. He watched her grow, punishing the nurses and nannies when they abused her. He taught her to fight, to use her powers. Her life was not a happy one, but it was a little better with Aster watching over her.
It was on her thirteenth birthday when everything changed for her. Kallen woke that morning to find the marks upon her skin. Black markings had appeared around her eyes, curling and twisting in a filigree design. It took her already striking teal eyes and made them radiant. When she was presented at an adult in front of the court, she amazed all by not only the fact that she survived, but she had done so well. It was then that a man was presented before her and a knife placed into her hand.
Kallen was thirteen when she made her first kill.
Officially a member of society, she was moved to the wing with the rest of her family and attended court and society gatherings. it became clear that this life was not for her. The bloodshed, the lies, the betrayal. She became the center of it, experiencing it the worst. She trusted no one, had no confidant. She learned to kill in ways that would make even the craziest killer balk, and she learned to do it with an impassive demeanor. She became the attention of assassinations, rumors, and games. The worst attention though was the want. She was a powerful member of their race, and the only female with such power. That on top of her already apparent beauty, men and woman sought her out with proposals of marriage and trysts. None such were as sick and persistent as Aster. In his eyes, she was not the little cousin he had protected, but the woman who he would kill to possess. And kill he had. Whenever he was near, she could feel his eyes on her. If he caught her alone--and sometimes not alone--in the halls of the castle, he would make his moves. She grew to despise him. The cousin who she had loved as a brother, the only family member she thought she could trust had betrayed her far worse than any other. Kallen took every opportunity to escape the castle secretly. It was then the she had met Xhex. A girl from the streets and a Bloodletter (a Netherling Assassin). Kallen saved her life, killing Xhex's old employer who turned on her. Xhex swore her life to Kallen and the two became friends. At night, Kallen would sneak off, finding Xhex and working with her. It wasn't long before Kallen starting taking her own jobs, working through Xhex so no client would see who she was. It was through these jobs that Kallen learned of the portals off-world. No one really know where they led, through rumors of a world drastically different from theirs was spread. Xhex and Kallen devised a plan and on the eve of the blue moon, they put it into action.

- Flight: Kallen's large gossamer wings are a cross between a dragonfly and butterfly in shape. Flimsy in appearance, they are deceptively strong, able to carry her quickly over the land and sea. Versatile, she is able to tuck them around her body and extend them to their full form for navigating tight areas and sharp turns in flight. When relaxed, they trail behind her on the ground and she often wraps herself in them. While normally a dark gray, they often reflect blue, greens, and purples in the light. Kallen is able to pull her wings back in her body and extract them at will. When they are not visible, one is able to feel the two nodules on her shoulders where they rest. It is rumored that in binding a Netherlings wings fully, they are rendered weak.
- Dark Lightning: Like others, Kallen is able to draw the darkness from her to attack. Unlike the others, she mixes it with her life force to create a crackling lightning inside every attack.
- Kamikaze: When her wings are out, Kallen is able to create a attack much like her dark lightning but far more amplified. Focusing in a target, she can charge six balls of dark lightning. One from each hand, then at every point of her wings. While charging, she can still move, her wings being the first and longest to create while her hands take little effort. When ready, the attack is launched simultaneously at a fixed point. Charge time: three posts
- Banshee's Wail: Kallen has the ability to let out an ear-piercing wail that has been known to shatter glass and even eardrums of some. It disorients her opponents and is used as a defense mechanism . The downside to this is that after her scream, her throat is practically ripped to shreds. She can still speak, but it pains her greatly and her voice is weak and hoarse. It often take a day or so for her to fully heal.

:Relationships:
- Xhex: Xhex has no bloodline to speak of, her parents dead at an early age soon after she was born. She survived on the streets before joining up with the Bloodletters and their gang. She has a different look than the others, her head shaved on one side and bright pink/purple hair on the other. Her horns are ivory with black tips, curling up from her head to sharpened points. She once had wings, but lost them when she was little, the appendages pulled from her back. Two scars remain that she shows off, proud that she survived. She is Kallen's only friend and confidant. She alone knows that Kallen is the princess and is the one that helps her escape. She chose to stay in Rothkalin, the idea of another world different to theirs terrifying the normally unshakable girl.
- Aster: The second oldest of the four cousins, Aster is the one who cared for when she was young. He believes he fell in love with her and desires her greatly. In his mind, she was created solely for him and he would process her no matter what. In his mind, she is not family, but a creation for him. His biggest secret is that he was the reason she was still alive, his grandfather's stipulation being that he can never tell her this fact. He tries to follow her after she escapes but was not able to stop or follow her.
