Finally things seemed to cool down between the old man and the strange horned woman, one sat at the table at Maya's side with long stands of thick smoke pluming from the tip of a black ashen stained pipe sticking from the corner of his mouth; coupled with the strong scents from the nearby cooking pots made Maya's head spin slightly but she didn't let on to it bothering her any. Maya enjoyed the break from the bickering between the two, if it wasn't one it was the other and while she preferred the company of the elderly man than the horned woman she wasn't much up to speaking at the moment less something of importance came to thought. Still stuck in the old office chair from the room which she had awoken in the differences in height towards the rest of the dining tables was very clear at this point, the old man rising high above her as he peered over his glasses at her with a small grin. Rather than making direct eye contact she lingered away towards the horned woman; her presence could always be felt even if she was across the room almost as though she was standing right at her side... breathing on her.... A shiver scaled down her back at the thought, for what reason had she... had she gone into such a state? Eyes hovering towards the horned woman a quick flip of the woman's hair gave Maya the impression that she had been looking her way not seconds before; another shiver ran down her back.
A brief sigh filled her lungs leaving Maya to ponder of what to do now that she was awake, clearly she was in condition to leave this place of her own accord and while she greatly wished to do so leaving from the over protective nature of the old man wasn't something she thought be possible at the moment; how far would she even make it if she tried? Standing proved more difficult than she would have liked even making it this far had been a trying adventure in itself, if she managed to break free, leave this place who knew what would become of her. Infection was the most likely cause, lucky though death did not penetrate the walls of the simulation not that some biological disease could hamper her any to begin with, at least, not back home. So much about this world was... unnatural to herself. She was a machine, nothing of which she experienced now was herself, the things she smelled, the things she felt, it was all off... never before had she felt something so...so... so real... yet fake at the same time.
"Here you go."
The clacking of a small bowl placed before Maya snapped her out of trance and back into the world around her; how long had she been out of it? Head craning up her eyes met with the horned woman's smiling face but a few inches away from her.
"Woman...."
The old man called out from a thick wad of smoke as it escaped through cracks in his lips, his voice trailed off into the air with a hint of warning to it.
"Oh come on... I can't give her anything to eat?"
"Ey, ye can; just back off af'ta."
A low whimper expelled from her throat like a wounded dog but the old man just waved her off with his free hand, he would have no more of her for the time being. With a sigh the horned woman backed down as she stepped away from the table side and back towards the stoves. Glance returning towards the old man he motioned towards the shimmering bowl that had been placed before her with the end of his pipe that lay gently in his finger tips more like a feather than wood at this point. Face lowering with uneasiness Maya glanced at the dinnerware with a grimace of what to expect; without ever having a need to ingest organic matter for nutrition was something Maya never sought after, for as far back as she could remember this was the closet a meal had ever gotten to her. Eyes darting towards a resting silver spoon Maya reached over with unsteady hands, picking it up in her nimble fingers Maya adjusted the metal equipment till it sat oddly between her fingers. It was as if they told a child to preform heart surgery, the familiar tools were there to do the job but how exactly they should be used was beyond the grasp of their concept; she knew this was going to be messy if not down right terrible.
With one last exchanging of looks towards the old man the tip of the spoon dove into the steamy broth, splashing its dark orange liquid across the rising rim of the bowl. Stirring the stew around Maya watched quietly as the small chucks of beef, potatoes, onions and a few other vegetables she could not identify swam around in a seemly blissful state as if being pulled down a slow drifting river. With each lap around the bowls circumference wispy strands of steam followed in the after math of the spoons movements, chucks of the soups make up drifted past as they jerked forward every so slightly flowing in each cycle. Maya kept this up for a few minutes rather than actually eating any of it... the concept, while billions did it every day was so different than anything she had ever done before... she wondered if this was what it was like for children when they first learned to eat.
Having done little more than play with the broth for some time Maya felt the presence of eyes locking onto her body, with a small glance through her long bangs she saw the horned woman hovering over a nearby counter in anticipation of what was to come, not only that but the old man seemed to be peering over his thick glasses at Maya, though when eye contact was made he simply looked away with a low humming as if nothing had happened. Sighing softly to herself Maya knew that the feeling would not go away till the first taste was completed and with her antisocial behavior the idea of being watched constantly made shivers trail her spine in heaving ways.
Swallowing heavily the spoon cupped upwards and away from the bottom of the bowl as Maya pulled awkwardly at it, ascending from the mixed broth filled the spoon lightly with a mixture of the vegetables and meat as they steamed in the cool air. Dripping at its base with shaky hand she brought it to her quivering lips still locked in a unsure grimace. Slowly she opened her mouth the contents of the spoon reaching ever closer with each passing second. Passing the rim of her open mouth Maya released the stew onto her tongue.
There was a pause. The room had grown silence all but the ticking of a far off clock could be heard. Eyes growing wide with shock Maya's mind flushed wide open with a series of information that overwhelmed her normal thought processes; saltiness expanded its way across her mouth but it was not alone with the sweet taste of carrots and well cooked onions but it was the deeply laid spices that kicked Maya tongue over board with favor. Without even the need to chew she swallowed as the spoonful left her mouth to parts unknown to herself.
"Well? Do you like it?"
The horned woman called out to Maya with a hint of woe in her voice.
There was no vocal answer as within seconds Maya torn into the rest of the bowl before her, like a starved man who had never seen a meal in years... which wasn't so far from the truth. Laughing filled the air as the two of them watched a ravenous Maya tear into the meal, where a young woman once sat now a wild beast shared a meal with them. One could have said more got on her than in her by the time Maya had finished what had been placed before her, splotches of juice smeared on her cheeks, a small chuck of beef attached itself to her nose and her long bangs were covered in a little of both. It wasn't until Maya had hit the bottom of a clear bowl that she snapped from her hunger lust state to hear the others laughing at her. Eyes tracing towards the two of them and the back at herself Maya's head shot down at the oak table below; she had never done such a thing before as to lose her control such as this before... let alone have others laugh at her expense.
"Oi it's 'lright lass. From tha looks of ye, ye could use a few good meals."
The old man chuckled, whipping a tear from his sunken elderly eye.
"So-Sorry... I don't usually...."
Maya's voice trembled under a coat of embarrassment.
In fact Maya never did anything such as what she had before; the concept of embarrassment had always been one of wonder for the alien but now she knew exactly what the definition had meant. Blood swarming from the depths of her veins a heat washed across her face with the coming embarrassment at her sloppily manners, tangled with her lack of any need to be in the center of attention made matters all the worse for her. Head hanging low a wall comprised of long silver hair helped to block the two of them from her site though in the end it did little good.
Tapping of shoes on wood reached her ears as another steaming bowl was pushed across the table till it laid directly under the make shift shelter that her hair had provided. With a arching movement Maya slowly uncurled till she saw the warming face of the horned woman smiling down upon her.
"No need to feel sorry. I haven't seen anyone enjoy my food that much in years."
"If ye can call it 'at."
"Hush!"
Her words cut through the air towards the old man leaving him to turn away in a growing cloud of protective smoke.
Nodding slowly Maya accepted the second bowl that had been given to her, not wanting another repeat like the time before she was slow to work away at this one. Still not fully functioning with the utensil that had been provided made it all the more easier to progress with care as to not create another mess in which to clean up. Spoon by steaming spoon Maya ate quietly with the occasional breaks in the noise when a pot moved around or the old man mumbled to himself in some language that Maya didn't understand.
"Names?"
The idea of creating any type of conversation without an important reason was something beyond the scope of Maya's normal ranges but these people had taken care of her... or what was essentially her for quite some time, it was the least she could do to show her thanks if not find out more of this world and possibly herself.
"Hmm?"
The old man questioned with a deep hum of confusion with her sudden question.
"...It has become apparent that I do not know your names."
Once again Maya could feel a flash of heat growing in her face, trying to keep the feeling at bay she held her breath for a few moments before letting it slowly release from her body.
"Think 'at is the longest thing ya ever did say."
The old man chuckled through a wafting blast of smoke.
"I, my dear lass am Savio. Most people call me Sav, or just old man."
Maya could have sworn a bubble of laughter jiggled her insides at the last part of his comment as up to this point she had simply referred to him as "old man" as more as description for his aged state whenever her thoughts came to him; perhaps her train of thought was not so different than others here... other than the fact they appeared to be a thousand years behind in technology.
"And I am-"
The horned woman spoke but for a moment but not before Savio cut her off.
"A 'ain in me arse. What? Oh was that not correct?"
Sav joked knowing all to well he was pressing her buttons.
"Don't make me hit you."
The horned woman hissed with a flick of a long pink tongue over her lips; with a clearing of her voice and expression she spoke up once more.
"Thaia, is my name. Don't let him tell you otherwise, alright?"
Winking at the last bit Thaia turned back around with a snap in her waist to attend to the miscellaneous pots and pans, each with their own creation in the works. With the brief conversation over and done with Maya returned to the half empty bowl before her, while at first she thought of nothing else but to devour the bowls remains a pressure growing in her body told her to halt all consumption, never having a stomach before Maya assumed that whatever structure that contained nutrition once consumed was reaching peak capacity.
"Thank you for the meal. I am finished now."
Pushing the bowl away from her body with a low calm voice she nodded in appreciation for the kindness they had shown her.
"Any 'ime there lass."
"Any time? As if you did any of the cooking! If it wasn't for me you been skin and bones!"
Thaia yelled out from over her shoulder with a shift in her shoulder of disbelief.
"Hate ta point it out, be I am 'yin an bones!"
Sav chuckled through a smoke screen before his face, Maya found it interesting yet odd that no matter which direction he pointed while he talked the continuous stream of smoke always went straight up into his face rather than where ever he spoke. Shrugging off the idea of asking him Maya stretch lightly in the chair with a small moan as her swore muscles seemed to come into full swing; with all the commotion between Sav and Thaia the pain faded away or at least it seemed to have.
"Sore huh? Ta be expected."
Sav spoke up through a pillar of smoke; how he could see through the grey cloud was beyond Maya but she didn't question it, just accepted it as a truth of the universe.
"Yes... It's new-"
Maya caught herself before anything else could escape her mouth about the new found feelings of muscle pain they would question further into where it was she came from and by the looks of this place any information could bring unwanted attention towards her and more dangers to face; with the condition she was currently in she figured it was best to say little and keep her ears open for all.
"Its... new... the pain has come back again...."
It was the best save attempt that Maya could bring out of her back pocket, by no means was Maya a good liar, however with her gentle poker face it was easy enough to fake it till she mastered the skill. Either way it seemed that neither Sav or Thaia caught on any to the small pauses in her wording, at least she had avoided it for now... but the way that Sav glanced at her from over his glasses Maya had the uneasy feeling that this conversation was only over for the moment.
"Well...."
Sav spoke with a short pause as he began to empty the ashes from the bowl in his long pipe, tapping the pipe from the bottom small clumps of blackened material escaped the pipes end as they piled together in a small ash tray.
"I suppose a bath would be in order."
"A bath...."
Truth be told Maya had never taken one before, only from images across the web did she know anything about the subject; without a need to cleanse dirt from her body the idea of a bath was useless... but now.... This body she found herself in was so much different than her other form, it felt pain, bleed and even needed nutrition to sustain itself... what else did it require; a bath clearly.
"Oh! Oh! I'll help her!"
"Woman...."
"Oh come on. She can't even bend over without splitting her wounds open, and are you going to tell you're going to help a young woman wash herself?"
Thaia rose the question knowing all to well she was correct in confronting him.
"It's not as though I haven't seen her nude before, I was the one who patched her up after all."
Sav defended himself though he could tell it was a losing fight but giving Thaia a good rouse every now and them kept him always on his toes.
"Yes but she was well passed out. Now she isn't."
Thaia sunk her verbal teeth further in towards the killing blow.
"What about the cooking? Do ye expect me to do it?"
Sav rose his voice slightly with on last attempt to clear himself of a duty which he had no real talent in.
"Yes."
Thaia spoke with confidence in her words knowing all to well that the final blow had been struck yet she was still not done with him yet.
Thaia strode over to Sav with a large wooden spoon in hand as she slammed it on the table before him with a thundering slam causing even Sav to jump with its force.
"I'm sure you can stir the pot and not let it burn, or can you not do something a woman can?"
Thaia voice held a tone of playfulness to it even though her eyes shinned with a gentle flame behind them, all the while Maya felt smaller and smaller in her chair as her eyes zoomed back and forth between the two of them; a certain aura of fright filled her at the sight of the woman dominating the old man with her words alone. Opening his mouth to protest Thaia ever so gently tilted her head towards one side as if telling him to shut his mouth; living as long as he had Sav knew which fights would gain him victory.
"Good, I'm glad we could come to a agreement."
With that Thaia rolled around to the edge of the table where Maya sat at, her form seeming all the smaller standing next to the slender tall woman, if not for the horns Maya would have though her less intimidating but such was not the case. Pulling the chair from the comfort of the oak table Thaia took charge of the program, sliding the wheeled chair across the room with ease Maya glanced back at Sav in his defeated stance as he glanced down at the wooden spoon in his hand, though he had claimed defeat Maya couldn't help but feel that there was a small smile beneath his beard.
Exiting through the far side of the kitchen Maya was brought into a larger room that loomed over the kitchen in size like a giant, from wall to wall the floor was covered in a fine white tile most likely marble or something close in comparison. The walls of the building all seemed to be made up of a type of oak each having the same texture and cut to them, perhaps they were all created from the same cluster of trees? Directly in the center of the room was a pair of staircases with a wide curve as the winded up towards the ceiling till they stopped at a second floor, Maya had never thought the building had a second story with an absence of noise above but with how empty the building was how could she have known. Against the far wall where Maya assumed was the front of the house rested a large wooden door, heavy in weight it was framed with thick iron bars any of which would have been nearly impossible for a normal being to move let alone dent; it was as if the front of building was reinforced at every door and window that could be seen as even the windows were barred with iron. Maya began to feel as if this building was more of fortress than a palace... what was going on here? And who was this Governor Sav spoke of?
"Don't worry. Everything will be explained soon.... But for know relax, it will do little good if you are as tense as you are.... I can think of a few ways we can relax you right up."
While Maya was sure that some where in Thaia's mind that she had meant well in her words Maya couldn't help that a shiver slithered down her spine.
