Rylee sits in a chair, an odd device attached to her head. She grips the arms tightly, excited but a little nervous. "Doctor, are you sure this will work?"
Dr. Bracket finishes plugging the device into a computer, attaching a data transfer cable to his latest robotic experiment. "Of course! The theory is sound, and I've worked out all the kinks! This will work perfectly." With that, he flips a switch on the back of her chair, causing a pair of metal clamps to spring from the arms and securely fasten around Rylee's wrists.
"Ouch! D-Doctor... are restraints really necessary?" Her excitement wanes severely, and now she's mainly nervous.
"I don't want to risk you having a reaction and breaking the device. It's better to be safe than sorry, after all." Dr. Bracket throws a switch on the central computer, flooding his assistant's brain with electricity, cutting off whatever she may have said next. The computer scans her brain as the electricity courses through, making an exact digital replica. Once the scan is complete, his AI software uses the information, transferring it through the hardline cable into the robot's metal brain.
In the chair, Rylee slumps over, the process having knocked her unconscious.
----
Rylee's eyes fly open in panic, some phantom pain lingering in the back of her mind. The lights seem painfully bright, but her eyes adjust almost immediately. She can hear the doctor shouting her name, a touch of panic in his voice. "Rylee! Wake up, girl! Wake up!"
"I'm awake, Doctor! I'm fine..." Rylee looks for the doctor, seeing him standing by the chair, shaking her. Wait... If he's shaking me, how am I seeing it?
Dr. Bracket's head whips around at the sound of the voice, seeing his robot sitting up and staring at its hands. "It... it worked? Number 6, can you hear me?"
Rylee, or rather, Number 6, glances up in confusion. "Doctor? Am I a robot? Did it work?" She quickly jumps to her feet, startled at how heavy she feels. It quickly passes as her internal systems adjust, and she walks over to the doctor and his assistant. "But... that's the original? I'm just a copy?"
Dr. Bracket feels his assistant's neck, ignoring the robot for now. "No pulse... damn! And she's not breathing! Oh... oh no... the experiment has failed! She wasn't supposed to die! I needed her to help me!"
"Doctor!" Number 6 grabs Bracket's arm as he tries to scurry away from Rylee's body, hearing the telltale sound of bones breaking. "Oh my god! Doctor, I'm sorry!" She releases his arm in horror as the doctor screams in pain.
"GAAAH! Number 6, power down!" He grabs a remote from the table, frantically mashing a red button. The blue gem set into the robot's neck sparks, a faint line of smoke rising from it. "What?! Damn, it shorted! Number 6, power down NOW!"
Number 6 is panicking, trying to make sense of everything. "Doctor, is she dead?! Am I dead?! What did you do?!" She grabs Rylee's shoulders, shaking her frantically. "No, no no no WAKE UP! I'M NOT DEAD!"
Dr. Bracket pushes past her, going for his tools. "I'll have to manually shut it down! It's gone berserk!"
"Doctor, no! Wait!" Number 6 grabs the doctor, her martial arts training taking hold of her as she twists him into a submission hold. "We can work this out! Don't deactivate me! PLEASE!" The doctor's frantic struggling stops abruptly, and he goes limp in her arms, his neck broken. Number 6 drops his body, horrified.
If she still had a stomach, it would be tight with fear, incapacitating her with nausea. As it was, there was only blind fear in her mind as she turned and ran from the two bodies, tripping over a power cord on her way out. "I have to... have to do something..." She runs back into the room, searching for answers.
She finds one, but it almost makes her sick to even consider it. She approaches Rylee's body, her hand shaking as she touches the mechanical device on her head. She whispers softly to her former self, "I'm sorry, please don't hate me..." She tinkers with the device, adjusting the power settings on the head piece and the computer. She throw the switch, the crackling of electricity following her as she flees from the building. Behind her, sparks fly, wires pop, and the computer catches fire as it overheats, starting a fire that will consume the entire laboratory.
Number 6, or rather, Rylee, pushes off the ground, taking to the air. After a moment of instability, she hovers above the burning building, sad enough to cry, but lacking the tear ducts to do so. "So much for a summer internship." She turns around, picking a random direction and flying away as fast as she can.
