Nasu woke up before the sun had begun to rise. It was a habit he had formed when he was young and homeless. You had to wake up early and fight for your place in the city or you would die. There were days where Nasu still woke up with a start covered with sweat and eyes wide with fear. Today however was not one of those days.
Quickly getting dressed in sweatpants, a t-shirt, and his jacket Nasu walked outside. It was the perfect kind of morning for him. Cold air hit his face, refreshing enough to wake him up instantly but not biting cold yet. Nasu took a deep breath smelling the air around, him everything felt sharp, brisk. He could smell the pine forest that surrounded the camp. Without another thought Nasu jumped into the air pushing his ki underneath him flying out of the compound. Once he was sure he was out of sight and no one was watching him Nasu started adding on speed, flying straight up in the air at breakneck speed. Finally Nasu got so high up he could see past the horizon to the curve of the moon. Nasu took a second to admire the view.
“So high I can see half the planet and I still haven’t reached the top of the dome for New Vegeta.” the Saiyan’s new home was truly a masterpiece of technology. Looking up he could see the stars more clearly than below where the light and smoke contaminated everything. And with that thought and a smile Nasu flew higher and higher until there was barely enough oxygen left for him to breathe. When he felt he couldn’t go one Nasu stopped his ki entirely. His body seemed to hang in the air for a moment as if unsure what happened, and then he fell. Nasu shot towards the ground like an arrow. Bringing his arms in tight towards his body to lessen the wind resistance he reached speeds he didn’t think possible. Nasu fell for a long time gaining speed the whole way down laughing with pure glee and enjoying the fall. Just as he was about to reach the treeline Nasu sent out his ki again to turn his fall into a long arc slingshotting him back in the air maintaining as much of his speed as possible. To anyone below Nasu must have looked like a blur. He just flew for the next 10 minutes enjoying flight more for the pleasure of flying than for any real training purposes. Just as the sun started to rise up over the horizon Nasu landed in a clearing in the forest about a mile or so from the Red Flag camp.
Sitting down cross legged on a rock Nasu cleared tried to clear his mind. When he was young his first master taught him to meditate. He hadn’t always had the opportunity but for once in his life he was safe, rested, and well fed. Nasu had time to himself to do whatever he wanted and today he was going to meditate. He wasn’t due to train with the other men until close to 11. He had hours to himself and with all that had happened to Nasu recently he felt the need to clear his head.
Once his mind was clear he extended his senses as far as he could. Even though he was almost a mile from the camp he could feel powers there. They were too far away for him to make out anything specific, but in order for him to feel it from this far away the power could only belong to Tejun. Nasu smiled ruefully, over a mile away and he could sense his energy, granted Nasu had a gift for sensing energy that he practiced every day. But still to be felt from this distance the man was a beast and miles ahead of Nasu.
“I have a long way to go. But I’ll catch up eventually just wait.” Nasu promised.
Nasu inhaled and exhaled slowly this time extending his senses but focusing on things much closer to him. As he got closer and closer Nasu was astounded by just how much life there was surrounding him. With his eyes opened Nasu would have believed he were alone in the forest however now with his senses extended he could feel just how much life surrounded him. Thousands of creatures from the birds up in the trees to ants digging underground. How could he have been so blind before to not notice everything going on around him?
He could sense a beehive in a tree10 feet away. Feeling their life force as each bee flew in and out of the hive working in harmony to sustain one another. He opened his eyes and saw the branch the hive was on was splintered. It would probably crack and down in the next storm leaving the now homeless bees to be killed by the weather that had just robbed them of their hive. Normally this would never have bothered Nasu, but he had just sensed them, in a way he had shared in their lives for a moment. Not only that but Nasu had been homeless for the majority of his life. He could sympathize, there was no reason for creatures even as small as bees to lose their home for no reason.
Reaching out with his psychokenesis Nasu picked up the nest as gently as it could and lifted it to a more sturdy branch higher in the tree. He could feel the bee’s agitation at their nest being moved unaware that Nasu had probably saved their home and their lives. He watched as the majority of the hive flooded out of the nest looking for the source of the disturbance and finding nothing. If Nasu hadn’t emptied his mind he would have laughed at their confusion as it was he still smiled.
Still sitting Nasu looked around and used his psychokenesis to lift four rocks into his hand studying them. Extending his senses concentrating on the rocks he shut his eyes. Then slowly at first he lifted the rocks into the air. Keeping his eyes shut trying to use only his psychokenesis to guide him Nasu began to rotate the four stones in a circle. When he had mastered that he tried something more complex and went with a figure eight instead. He had always believed training his mind was just as important as training his body. If truth be told, he was weak compared to a lot of others when it came to overall power. His entire family over shadowed him to such a degree it was almost laughable, but Nasu knew that if he could get close in power level he would be smart enough to take advantage. With that in mind, Nasu sought to train his mind just as rigidly as the rest of his body.
Beads of sweat started forming on Nasu’s forehead as he kept the stones in the air with only his mind. Then eyes shut, rocks spinning in the air, Nasu began to levitate using ki, almost immediately he felt one of the stones drop. Extending his senses to try and find it again he dropped another stone. He knew in a fight he would need to be able to multi-task and would need all his senses to be able to operate in unison, with that in mind he started again.
It took him almost an hour before he was able to fly, and keep the stones rotating in the air at the same time. A sense of pride flooded through him. It took a lot of work but all things worth doing should take work Nasu thought.
And now with two skills mastered Nasu decided to push his luck and go for a third. Clearing his mind again Nasu tried to extend his senses. Immediately he noticed a power level right next to him. The sudden appearance of the other power level startled him so much Nasu dropped all four stones and himself back onto the ground below. Opening his eyes, spinning around to face this new threat Nasu let the knife fall from his sleeve into his right hand. And he was surprised for the second time in as many seconds to see a man in a monks robe sitting on the ground next to where he was levitating moments before.
The monk was sitting cross legged continuing his own meditation apparently undisturbed by Nasu’s fall. A moment passed in shocked silence, before the monk even acknowledged Nasu. Standing up from his meditation the man turned to face him meeting his eyes even though he stood a good foot shorter than Nasu.
“You saved the bees’ nest.” he said
It wasn’t a question leaving Nasu with no idea how to respond other than simply. “Yea, it seemed like the right thing to do.”
The monk looked at the pin on Nasu’s jacket and frowned. Did he recognize the pin? The Red Flag was a fairly well known mercenary organization, but why frown? He had come and sat next to Nasu who was sure he was there first so why all of a sudden take note of the pin with disapproval? Then looking Nasu in the eyes again the man asked. “It was, but why did it seem like the right thing to do? The bees’ are much lower than you, what would be lost if their home were to fall?”
Nasu had to admit on a normal day he wouldn’t have thought twice about it, he would have walked past the nest without a second thought and been on with his day. However today he had felt all the life around him, the bees, their energy, their lives, he’d been a part of them for a moment. And because of that Nasu didn’t want to let them die if he could help it. Nasu tried to explain as best he could.
“They don’t deserve to die just because they aren’t like me. I could help them easily enough so I did.” The man seemed satisfied. Why was Nasu explaining all this to him? The monk had startled him, sat next to him, if anything he should be explaining himself to Nasu not the other way around.
For the first time the Monk looked down at the knife still in Nasu’s hand. A look of confusion on his face. Which in turn made Nasu both blush at the fact he drew a knife on an unarmed monk, and confused at why the man looked so baffled. Anger or fear he could understand as Nasu had drawn a weapon on him but puzzlement was not a normal response.
The monk looked up at him again. “Why do you have that?” he asked genuine confusion in his voice now as well as his expression. Nasu turned red again.
“To defend myself.” he said “You startled me and I thought you were a threat at first. Sorry about that.” Now he was apologizing to the man who had snuck up on him. Something clearly wasn’t right here…
“No, no. That’s not what I mean. You have power, you know how to use your energy. Why do you need that?” He said pointing to the knife in his hand.
Nasu looked down at the blade and the second his eyes were down the man dashed forward too quick to be natural. With one quick motion he split the blade of the knife in half making it useless. Also in one quick motion he had immensely pissed Nasu off. Did this man know how much those things cost?!
“What the hell was that for?!” Nasu said probably louder than was really necessary, but Nasu was already quick to anger and the man had just destroyed his knife for no reason.
“See,” the monk said. “Knives are fragile. They can be caught, they can be used against you if you’re not careful. Why would you depend on a knife when you can clearly manipulate your energy?” even after being yelled at the man’s tone and expression remained confused. Almost as if Nasu’s anger didn’t register at all. This of course only angered Nasu more initially.
But then Nasu remembered a time when, exactly like the monk had said, his knife was used against him. A man caught an ill planned throw and used his own knife to murder a number of guards and to threaten both him and his brother. Nasu had killed him for that but it hadn’t brought the guards back. Their deaths’ were still on his conscience. And just like that Nasu’s anger faded away.
“I use a knife because my energy isn’t something sharp. I can use it to fly, to blow something up if I’m willing to exhaust myself, or to push people away from me but that’s all, a knife lets me kill things.” Nasu said trying to explain.
The monk looked down at the pin on his shirt and then looked back at the beehive. Something seemed to click in the tiny man’s mind as he looked back at Nasu.
“You use your energy, like this.” And without another word the man through blast after blast of ki energy into the air where they exploded above the tree line. Hundreds of birds startled by so many explosions flew over head fleeing the sudden noise. It was a good distraction because Nasu was initially too stunned to talk.
He had never seen someone throw so many energy blasts all at once. On top of that the man seemed winded but not exhausted. That much ki would probably kill Nasu if he tried to fire it all at once. Hell even if it didn’t he wouldn’t be able to move afterwards.
“I can’t do that.” Nasu said candidly. “I don’t have that much power, using that much energy would leave me drained, useless, in all probability it would kill me before it ever killed my opponent.”
The monk didn’t look away from him. “No, that’s not true. You have the energy to do it and keep standing I can sense it. It will drain you, but then all attacks large or small require energy from you. Why should this be any different? This is a large attack so it will require a large price but you’re strong enough to pay it and keep on fighting. The key is using your energy efficiently. Here let me see you launch a ki blast.”
Nasu wasn’t sure if what he said was true or not, but he had just seen the man create an explosion in the air big enough to kill him 5 times over and he was still standing so Nasu wasn’t going to argue. Not only that it seemed the man wanted to teach Nasu this skill, and he wasn’t one to turn away from a good thing. Gathering his energy into his hand he threw it up in the air. Letting the ki go creating an explosion in the sky, though not nearly as big as the one the monk had created minutes before. On top of that, the one blast he had launched left Nasu drained and tired. He couldn’t launch another 5 let alone 50 rapid fire.
“No,” the monk said instantly “you’re using too much energy and you’re wasting half of it. It’s leaking out the side leaving you drained and useless. Shut your eyes they’re only getting in your way. Now look with your senses like you were earlier with the rocks.” and with that the man began slowly gathering his ki.
Nasu shut his eyes. This time reaching out with his senses he could feel the man gather the ki to his hands, none of it leaked out the side like he had said Nasu was doing. Then one at a time the man would throw the ki blasts into the air. As Nasu watched with more than just his eyes this time.
Keeping his eyes closed Nasu gathered energy to his hand. He could feel it leaking out, gathering the energy in slowly and confining it all to his hand Nasu threw it upwards again. This time the blast was bigger, but Nasu didn’t feel nearly as drained. He had used only a fraction of the energy the first blast took. His excitement almost over rode his weariness. Smaller amount of energy or not throwing a blast like that still took something out of him. But he found he could stand still and new skill in hand he was stronger than he’d been before. That was something to be proud of.
“No, no, no.” The monk said again startling Nasu away from patting himself on the back. “You gather your energy too slow. How will that ever help you in a fight if it takes you 2 minutes with your eyes closed to figure out what you’re doing. You’re overthinking this clear your mind like when you were meditating. Feel with your senses what you’re doing. Let your senses guide you.”
Nasu tried to clear his mind again. As soon as his mind was empty all the weariness came crashing down over him. He sagged a little slumping his shoulders, his knees buckled slightly and the drain of using all of that energy hit him at once.
“Are you a child?” the monks tone was calm questioning. It was probably the only thing that let him insult Nasu like that without Nasu trying to punch him. Nasu had seen how strong the monk was. With how tired Nasu was already he knew he couldn’t win the fight but he also wasn’t one to be insulted to his face.
“Are you so weak minded that you can’t push past your weariness, you’ll just let it overwhelm you like that? In a fight are you going to tell your opponent I’m tired please give me a moment to rest? Push through it you’re more capable than you think.”
Nasu glared daggers at him. Granted the monk was trying to help but don’t be a dick about it. These thoughts weren’t helping. Nasu shut his eyes cleared his mind. Pushing past the exhaustion, ignoring the pains from using all of that energy he felt his power and threw it down to his hands. Rapid fire he threw it above his head one after another. Ten explosions lit up the tree line each one slightly larger than the last. Each one using only a fraction of the energy Nasu’s initial blast had taken. This time there was no leakage. Nasu smiled at the monk who was standing and smiling back at him. Then without another word Nasu collapsed in exhaustion.
“It doesn’t use nearly as much energy,” the monk said standing over him. “but nothing is free.”
Nasu smiled completely unable to move for the time being but still completely content. Taking deep breaths trying to get as much air as possible Nasu stared up as the monk bent down seemingly intent to give him more wisdom. He had to thank the man for everything that he had taught him but he could barely catch his breath nevermind talk.
The monk leaned over Nasu smiling. “Two more lesson young one.” Looking down the monk gestured to him “Clearly you should never use so much energy you are unable to defend yourself. Leaving yourself completely vulnerable like this puts you in a lot of danger.” With that the monk reached into his pocket and stole Nasu’s wallet. “And finally as I said before, nothing is free.”
And with that the man walked off whistling to himself while Nasu lay there drained unable to move so much as a muscle to stop him. Nasu felt the sun began to rise shining on him and warming him. Knowing he would now probably be late for his training later today Nasu began to laugh uncontrollably. He couldn’t help it the man had set him up perfectly and robbed him without having to throw a single punch. No Nasu thought, this skill was bought not stolen.
Still unable to move Nasu stared up at the sky “No nothing is free monk, but it was strength and skills well paid for.”
