The white bleached wall of the lab reflected the florescent bulbs that lit up the room, devoid of any other color than the dullness that enveloped the room. It was cold, there was no warmth of a person’s heart, no compassion, no soul, no love that filled the many rooms. This was a place of science there was no need for those emotions, they slowed down the progress of human civilization, this was a place for progress, progress at any cost, any cost. The rooms where packed with test tubes, medical devices, and delicate pieces of machinery that only the smartest minds would know of each of their functions. This was not a place where child came to play, or for the average citizen to tour, no only the smartest minds that could be hired into service were the ones that were too walk the stone tiled hallways.
Though all the rooms had their owe purpose for each of their half insane experiments one room out of them all was attracting quite a bit of attention than the rest. Today was a important day for them, all of them, the process had been going on for years but today...today was the day that their life prevailed or diminished there was nothing in between for them. No memories, no knowledge of what lay outside, the only thing they had ever known was the tank. The tank was safe, the tank was warm, the tank gave and took, the tank was home, no one ever left the tank, the tank was all they had, all she had, all she needed...or so she thought.
Packed against one side of the room men and women dressed in long white coats over looked the two men that were preforming the last checks, everything had to go right, everything needed to go right. After all the time and money that had been spent on the project one of them had to be the right one, they just had to be! Frantically finishing the last adjustments the two shook each other’s hands with a smile of delight across their face, even though it had not started yet they were already celebrating as if they had. Holding their hands up they spoke out to the set of the people, their words muffled against the tank, the all providing tank, she didn't care what was happening, the tank would protect her. People had always come and gone past her, she had never thought more of it, the tank told her not too, so she obeyed, but never before had she seen so many. The tank told her to relax, that everything was going to be ok, so she listened and closed her half open eyes again, she wanted to sleep but the tank would not let her.
Suddenly she felt something new, something she had never felt before...the tank...it was leaving her...the liquid that surrounded her began to drain. Slowly the leave dropped to her nose, her mouth, then her shoulder, down to her chest, to her thighs, all the way past her toes and then it was gone. She began to worry such a thing had never happened before she didn't know what to do, but the tank told her to calm down, so she did. Her bright phoenix hair hung in clumps against her warm skin, even in the wet state that it was it still seemed to shine. She lay there with her eyes closed the new feeling of cool air bushing against her was a strange one, she didn't know what to think of it, the tank told her not to, so she obeyed. Her ears flickered at one of the men talking, though she could hear the words she didn't know of what it was speaking about, she wanted to understand but the tank told her not to, so she obeyed. The tube that had always been conntect to her nose pulled away from her face as she coughed and wheezed for air, the first time her lungs had ever worked on their own with out a machine doing it for her.
Across the wall from the scientists many tanks lay now open each one holding a girl of similar size, even with their own differences but they looked as though all related in one way on another. Each with their eyes closed as the two humans looked over them, one would shake his head in excitement but soon the other would show disagreement. They would argue for a few second before it was decided that the creature wasn't fit for what they had planned, sighing with dissatisfaction one of them pulled a gun out, with the barrel point blank against the girls skull it shot. The ring sound caused the others to yell out in pain at such a sound, their large sensitive ears wiggling in pain from such a sound.
Slowly the girl began to open her eyes the bright lights from above causing a strong pain in her head, but she fought against it, she was afraid even though the tank told her not to be, it was the first time the tank was unable to calm her down. Pressing against the back of the tank she pushed her self onto her unsteady feet, feeling as weak as a new born she tumbled from the tank as the wires that were strapped to her broke off from her. Slumping to the floor she looked around the room, other tanks filled with people she had never seen before, had they been next to her the whole time? A free thought...she was expecting the tank to tell her to sleep again but no sound came, she was confused, where was the tank? Looking at the floor in front of her stood a golden plate with silver letter spread across it, reaching her hand out she traced over the symbols having no idea of what each one meet. The symbols traced out to be XI.VI...she traced the letters over and over with her fingers trying to get a grasp on what they meant.
All of her focus stuck on the symbol she hadn't even noticed the two creatures as they had approached her, already they were looking over her as she stared at the ground not even paying attention to the either of them. Reaching down the man took a grip of her shoulder as he turned her to face towards him, still too weak to fully control her body she could do little other than follow his strong hold. Almost face to face the man looked her over, shinning a small bright light into her eyes she tried to close them but he made her hold them open. Checking her teeth, ears, tail, and other areas of her body she just lay there slumped on her legs letting him do whatever he wanted with her, it didn't bother her at all. All she wanted was to go back to the strange symbol, what did it mean, what was it trying to tell her?
Finishing his exam over her he tried back to the other man as they discussed something still under able to understand them, she turned back to the letters and began to trace her fingers over the characters once again, slowly running her fingers down each of their lengths.
"She's physical prefect."
"That wasn't the goal of the project, you just want to find the prefect one as fast as possible to spare the rest of them."
"That's not true! Just look at her!"
"Yes, yes she does have the looks for what we were trying to achieve but she lacks the power. The scanner detects her strength is even lower than the last one, I know you don't want to have to destroy your projects but you knew what you signed up for when you joined."
"Give her the test!"
"There is no-"
"Give her the fucking test."
"You’re making us look bad." The voice sighed as he pulled out a small necklace from his back pocket, it was the same colors as the plates she was trying to read.
Taking a hold of the girl once again he turned her to face towards himself once again, as he took the necklace from the other man and placed it over the girls head. She could see his mouth moving but no words came out, she didn't know how she knew but she could tell the man was saying 'please, please let this work'. The girl didn't understand why the man was saying what he was but he seem up set for some reason, something new overcame her, something she had never felt before and it pulled at her chest. Something inside of her chest felt pain, his pain, she felt...saddened to see him upset. The new feeling was strange to her as little bead of tears began to form at the base of her eyes, welling up the poured down her face as they rolled down her reddened cheeks. The new feeling was overwhelming to the girl as it was really the first thing she had ever felt, sadness, it was painful but at the same time it felt good to her. She didn't know why she leaned forward and clung onto the man but she did, the urge came out of nowhere but it told her to do it. The man seemed stunned at the action his arms holding out at his side not sure what to do about such a thing, glancing back up at the other man he shrugged his shoulder as if asking he didn't know what to do.
Crying into his chest she could feel her warm tears soaking into his shirt, it felt like the feeling would never stop but that was when she felt a pair of arms wrap around her body. Startled at the action she pulled her head back away from his shirt too see the man holding on to her; she felt safe, as if she was in the tank once again, and yet someone it felt even better than that. Sniffling she tried to rub the tears away from her face, her tail wiggling back and forth across the flooring.
"How cute...." The other scientist said as he watched the two.
"She failed the test...you know what to do don't you?"
"Please I can’t...not this one... look at her, she’s just like anyone of us...you can-"
"I can and I will, if you will not do it, then I shall do it myself, and you as well. Now, you have a choice here, save your career and your life or die with your experiment. The choice is yours." The scientist held the gun down to the man on the floor.
Looking back and forth between the bleary eye fox girl and the gun, his hand slowly raised up as he took a hold of the sleek metal weapon. Disgust burned in his stomach he couldn't believe what he was about to do, he had been spared killing the first one, but too kill his own creation was like killing a piece of himself, this creatures...no these girls where a part of him... they were his children.... Looking down at the gun and then back into the eyes of the fox girl that sat before him he pressed his palm against her smooth skin, it was if he was stroking a ball of silk.
"I am so...so sorry, I should have never done this...not to you, after all...you’re my little girl aren't you?"
Whipping the gun around he pulled the trigger as it was aimed at the scientist’s leg, not expecting such the attack he screamed out in pain as the heated metal ripped through his soft muscles tissue. Yells of panic rang throughout the room as the man held the gun out towards the crowd, he knew none of them would be a threat but he just wanted to be sure. The girl had screamed in pain at the sound of gunshot and yelling, holding her hand over her ears she whimpered in pain. Seeing her in such pain she pulled her into a hug as he stroked her head.
"I'm sorry, it’s ok... I'm going to get you out of here, I won’t let them take you."
Off down the hallway sirens began to blare as it was now obvious that security was on their way, he would need more than a pistol to stand a chance against them. He struggled with his next choice, there were so many of the girls left, there was no way he could save them all...his heart seemed to tear as he tried to decided what to do. He had to save at least one, after what he had done if he couldn't save at least one then he would have failed in his cause, they were his children and he had to protect them but he could only save the one. However in the time that he had taken to decide the guards had already enter the room their guns all trained on the man, the girl having no idea of what was going on looking between the two sides. Before the man could even get as much a word off a bullet came crashing into his chest, as blood splattered out of his mouth and on to the plate before him. The loud sound didn't bother her as much as the sight of the man getting shot did, though she had no idea what the guns did she could tell that he was hurt.
The necklace around her neck began to swell with a white light as the gem on the end of it began to float from her body, something new was forming inside of her she could feel it as it ran through her veins. She had no idea what it was but she knew how to use it, the voice, it returned once again to her, the language was unclear but she knew what it wanted her to do. Eyes glowing she turned her attention to the guards who now had their guns pointed at the girl, before they could fire off a single round the base shook as lone strands of light burst through the roof striking the guns out of the hands of the men, the impact of the beams shattering the weapons in half. Stumbling away from the unexpected attack the men fled from the room in a panicked manner, each one fighting each other through the door. Seeing that the men where no longer a threat she turned her attention back to the man who had comforted her, eye shut his face was turning white while his shirt was turning a dark red.
Not sure what was wrong with him she tugged on his blood stained shirt as the red liquid marked her skin red with his blood, she had never seen someone been shot before, she had no idea how much pain he was and how close to death he was. Seeing where the blood was pooling up the most she ripped open his shirt to see where the bullet had pierced his flesh, without understanding of what it was she reached out to try and better understand what it was. What came next was a shock to her as her hand lit up a shower of white light as she touched the wound, the white light flowed down from her hand onto the chest of the man as before her eyes a small piece of metal flung out from the whole as it began to patch its self-up. The voice called out to her once again, it's gentle voice touched her heart.
"Worry not young one, he shall not perish today. I will lend my strength to preserve his." Within a few second the blood had poured back inside his body and closed up the whole up as if it had never been there in the first place. Feeling faint the girl slumped forward on to the chest of the man as her body felt ever weaker then when she first left the tank, sleep taking over her mind she tried to fight against it but it was too much for her.
Later more guards came running down the stair cases that led into the labs, this time they were ready for whatever the girl would be able to throw at them, one thing was for certain UNITY knew magic and they knew how to fight back against it. Charging into the lab they found the scientist as he lay on the ground in a pool of his own blood but there appeared to be no sign of the girl or the man anywhere in sight. One of the guards went to check the pulse of the fallen man while the rest of them spread out to check the rest of the room, it wasn’t very large so after a few minutes they spread out to the other labs to make sure they weren’t there instead. The guard captain decided to stay in the room with the injured scientist while the medics we’re sent to retrieve him, sighing he took a hold of his radio and held down the black button to speak.
