The distant memories of the children that had played at the park moved past Vixi’s eyes as she watched over the park from the swing, rocking ever so gently she tapped her foot against the gravel. During the day when the children roamed the grass fields she would hide in the tall branches of the trees and watch them from a far, chasing after one another laughing they were having fun…they were having fun. She longed to join them, to have fun, to laugh, to make friends but she knew she could not, all she could do was watch and listen. Listen to the fun they were having without her, somewhere in the back of her mind she thought they might know she was there but the hope that someone would talk to her never came. She had been told to stay out of sight, the bright ball of light that rose every day was something to fear and to stay hidden until the bright light had gone to sleep. As naive as she was she went along with idea, staying hidden from the light until it had turned dark once again, she had lost count of just how many times the ball had disappeared but she kept waiting. Waiting was all she had been told to do, ‘wait here till I return, stay out of sight, and stay away from people’ the words burned in her ears as if she had just been told. So she waited, and waited, obeying orders was something she could do well, but a sinking feeling had been forming in her chest since he left her. She didn’t know what it was but it called to her, pulled at her, made her think the worst had happened, she did her best to shake the idea from herself but when she wasn’t expecting it, it would creep upon her once again. It was anguishing waiting here day on day, night after night, but she did, because he had told her too. Other than the clothes on her back and her silver necklace he was all she had in the world, he was her whole world, she loved him with everything she had.
Slipping off from the rubber seat of the swing Vixi walked towards the metal play scape the kids crawled around during the day time, it always looked like they had so much fun on it. She had longed to join them but it would have been against the rules, the three simple rules governed over her life. Taking a small leap she stood on top of one the wooden platforms that formed a stair case deeper into the structure, taking a brisk pace she walked up the stairs as she looked back and forth across the open area. She was hoping that she might see him once again but the quick scan revealed that she was still the only one there again, drooping her ears she slumped against one of the plastic walls as she reached the top of the stairs. How many more cycles of the light could see take before he returned, already her clothes had begun to build up a layer of dirt even as careful as she had been not to get messy. Pain shot from her stomach every few hours as it made a strange sound that she couldn’t fully understand what it was trying to tell her but it didn’t sound happy, it seemed like every time it tried to talk to her it would cause her a great deal of pain. Often she found it was difficult to sleep any, every time she did try to the pain would wake her up and wouldn’t settle down until a few minutes had past. Even with the combined lack of sleep, eating habits and dirt that covered her clothes she still had a beauty to her that shinned past all of the wear and tear, as her skin seemed clear of any of the dirt that clung to her clothes. Vixi had noticed that while her skin was clear of any dirt her clothes were not, she questioned why that was but had little idea of why it might be. The thought of taking her clothes off had passed through her mind at one point but she immediately recalled it, they had been giving to her by her father, it was the only thing she had of him.
A strong breeze kicked up from the north as it blew across the playground, sending a chill down Vixi’s back she retreated to the plastic tunnel she had claimed as her bed. By no means was it comfortable but it was a place she could escape from the cool night winds and have a roof over her head, in case she didn’t wake up before the light returned. Though her height was much greater than those that played here during the day the little fox eared girl was just small enough to fit into the tunnel as she crawled on her hands and knees. The silver zipper than held her black boots together clanked against the plastic materials as she crawled a few feet into the tunnel, coming to the end of the tunnel she found the clear plastic cap that showed her the rest of the park. Easing herself on to the flooring of the tunnel she rested her chin on her arms as she peered out into the night in case he showed up in the middle of the night he would be able to see her up here.
Though the tunnel provided great protection from the cold nights Vixi found it most difficult to find a position in which she could lay without having something jabbing her in the back. Rolling around in the tunnel she tired to find the most comfortable spot she could find which prove to be a hassle. Eventually she gave up on the idea and just lay there on the plastic tube as she looked up at the dim stars that traced the night sky. Vixi loved the night time, not just because she could run free without having to worry about the light but because these tiny balls of like would appear. The first time she saw them Vixi had run away yelling from their sight, fearful that they would hurt her, but after seeing that she was ok she wandered out cautiously into their embrace. They were beautiful tiny specks of light, unlike the big on that hurt her eyes she would watch the little ones for hours as they slowly drifted across the sky. At one point she tried to reach out to touch one but found that it was much further away than she first thought, using a rock she tired tossing it to knock the light from the sky but found it was even further away than she would throw. The specks of light confused her they were so bright and yet so far away from her, eventually she gave up on the idea of ever trying to reach them, rather she would just watch them for hours until she drifted off to sleep.
Ears pressing against her head she let out a loud yawn as stretched her arms, she was tired though she hadn’t done much other than watch people all day her lack of energy came from her lack of food. Rolling onto her back she watched the stars as they drifted across the night sky, feeling the wave of sleep coming over her she pulled her tail up to her chest and cuddled with the only company she had in the darkness of the night. Though the tunnel was cramped as a person her size wasn’t supposed to scale the playground and a bolt that held the structure was jabbing her in the back she quickly drifted off to sleep. Usually she dreamed of sights she had only seen from afar, the grass hills that shadowed over the city, the tops of the tall buildings that lined the city or sitting atop a cloud as she watched the world from above, the last one was her favorite. This dream was different though…it felt as though she had never gone asleep as she stood in a blank vale, no matter which direction she looked all she could see was white, infinite, vast whiteness.
Uncertainty and fear began to trace their way into her heart as she had no idea where she was now, it had to be a dream right? The last thing she remembered was falling asleep in the tunnel and now she was here, there was no way that she could have been moved…was there? Taking a few steps on the white floor the first thing that hit her was that her footsteps made no noise, even though Vixi was light on her feet most of the time it seemed rather odd that they made no sound. Ears twitching she tried to make out a sound, any sound, it seemed that there was no noise at all, just her heart beat as it pumped inside of her chest. The whole thing was very unsettling to her, no sound, no people, nothing just a blank world that enveloped her. The lust to run built up inside of her chest, just to keep running until she found something but looking around again she suppressed the feeling, where would she run too? Every direction looked the same to her, she would probably just get stuck running around in circles and before long run herself ragged.
“I apologize for taking so long….” The first sound broke through the silence like a wave of hope at the same time though Vixi hadn’t been expecting it; nearly jumping out of her she turned around to see what had made the noise. Eyes widening as they filled with tears, it was him, it was her father. Heart leaping into her throat she ran towards the man her tears trailing behind her as she rushed towards him, it had been so long, so many nights she couldn’t believe it was him.
Leaping forward she wrapped her arms around his waist and slammed her face into his chest, at this point she was sobbing as her tears sunk into his shirt. She tried to form the words of what she was feeling but all she would managed was joyful growls and whimpers, but she was sure that it was enough for him to understand. Rubbing her face against his shirt something strange hit her, pausing she pulled back and sniffed the man, confusion was spread across her face as she looked up into his. She couldn’t understand what was going on, it looked just like him, even down to the scar that lined his jaw but…it didn’t smell like her father, he had no scent what so ever. Tears running down her face she pulled away from the man, taking a few fearful steps away from him. It looked just like him…but it wasn’t.
“I am sorry, I thought this form would be most comfortable for you to be around. I can see that I might have misinterpreted that, but please I mean you no harm, I only wish to talk.”
Vixi tail swished around as she heard the man’s words, she was so confused, how could a man look just like him but not be her father, it worn the same clothes, the same hair, but had none of his smell. Rubbing her eyes she whipped away the tears that were running down her face, she hated crying but it seemed like no matter what happened it was always her first response. Mentally exhausted Vixi collapsed on the ground with a thud, she was just too tired to want to deal with any of this anymore, it felt as though she was just being dragged along, time after time, was she ever going to be with her father once again?
Not even hearing the sound of the man’s foot steeps she quickly found him sitting next to her on the ground his legs stacked over one another as he rested. Pulling back in shock she glanced around to see if he really had just moved so fast that she hadn’t even noticed it, looking back him her eyes were filled with curiosity, exhaustion and sadness. Reaching out his hand the man placed his hand on her head as stroked her hair just like her father had done before he left her, having longed for the attention of another for so long she whimpered happily with the human touch. Closing her eyes she sat there for a while, time didn’t seem to pass in this vast whiteness so she enjoyed the attention, at this point it really didn’t matter who it came from. Whimpering in pleasure she sat their relatively quietly as the man stroked her ears, gently he spoke out to her again.
“Keep your eyes closed, relax and listen to my words. That is all I ask of you right now.” She found his voice very relaxing, it wasn’t her fathers but she found it just a comforting if not more than his would have been. Letting his words sink in he started up once again.
“You know where you were born, though you might not fully remember, that is alright. The purpose for your existence was not one that was for pure reasons. Men, mere men required powers far beyond their control that is why you are, what you are. You... I, we are one, I am a part of you, just as you are a part of me. I feel what you feel and though not yet you will feel what I feel, it is not something I would wish upon any of my creations, but you are not one of them. Men, my creations have been dipping their hands into things that they will never understand, those are the one that have created you, men like your father.” His last words rang inside of her head as concern began to fill her heart.
“Worry not, he is not like the rest of them. He love you, he love everything about you, he wishes you to live a normal life, but due to his actions that will not be something you shall earn easily. His ideas were in your best interest but by the time he knew he loved you it was too late, the gears were already in motion.” It paused to make sure all of his words had been absorbed.
“One day soon, you will become a part of something great, and you will have the choice to save many people or turn your back on them. Though we are connected I cannot control you as you cannot control me. We are separated by many walls, physically we will never meet, only through our minds will we ever touch. I love you just like I love my own creations, you are the child of my child, my unconditional love will burn for you until long after you are gone. However I ask…when that times comes that you do what you believe is right, as it would be impossible for myself to stop you, it would unjust if I made you go against what you believe.” Taking a hold of her shoulder he brought her to eye level as she open hers to meet him.
“This is a lot to put on one person but I believe you have that strength, but you do not know it yet. In times of fear your courage will shine through, in times of doubt you will hold strong, and when people need you most you will aid their call. Keep these thoughts will you always, because even when your alone those that you care about will be within your heart.”
It had been a lot for the little girl to take in, as the wheels in her mind turned at all which she had been told. She didn’t know what would be coming, or when, but she had to be strong, if not for her then for her father. All she had was because of him, the clothes of her back, her very life, she owed him more than she would ever have. Looking into the man’s eyes she shook her head as she understood what she had been told. Already she was showing just how brave she was, though she often would cry when dealt with a challenge, she had accept a life that was going to be a difficult one.
“That’s a good girl, I hope, through you many lives can be saved…but children…they are so reckless, it amazes me that they have come so far, though it hasn’t been the first time nor will it be the last.” He muttered as he began to stoke her hair once again.
Placing her head on the man’s lap she closed her eyes as the man continued to stoke her head, she knew it wasn’t really her father but for the time she pretended. It could be a long time before she would see him again, but she would never give up hope, he would return one day but until then she would wait for him. Whimper happily she laid there for what seemed like hours until she slowly opened her eyes and it was dark once again, the bright plane she had been in was gone as she was now laying in tunnel. Shooting up she slammed her head into the top of the tunnel, falling back down she crashed back on to the floor as she held her head in pain, weak whimpers of pain shooting from her throat. Tears welling in her eyes she crawled out from the tunnel so that she would be able to stand up without hitting her head once again.
Standing out on the open play scape she looked around the grounds to see if anything had changed, but everything seemed the same. The same trees stood nearby as they drifted in the weak breeze, the tall buildings that lined the nearby street and the metal swings as the rocked in slowly back and forth. Everything seemed the same…was it all a dream or did it really happen? A flash of light burst from her chest as the silver necklace she had been wearing lit up like the city lights that surrounded the park, illuminating the surround park. Though such a bright like would usually hurt her eyes she was able to pick the small symbol into the palm of her hands as she watched as the light fly from it. Once again the gentle voice called from inside her mind.
“Remember you are never truly alone. Sometimes it helps to have a reminder. Be safe my dear.” Another flash of light and it was once again dark, the normal lights of the park illuminated once again now that the spectacle of light was gone.
Something felt off though as she moved her arms, something was wrapped around her chest. Looking down at her chest through the dim light she saw that a jacket was wrapped around her chest, giving it a quick sniff her eyes bolted up wide. Father! It was her fathers! Letting a squeal of joy out she jumped around on the play scape as it creaked with her force. It was rather too big for her since her father was much larger than she was but she didn’t care, it was his. Placing the long sleeve up to her nose she took a deep inhale of his scent as a few tears ran down her face, he was out there somewhere and she would find him.
Slipping off from the rubber seat of the swing Vixi walked towards the metal play scape the kids crawled around during the day time, it always looked like they had so much fun on it.
