He hadn’t been able to say it. Hadn’t been able to say anything really but the thought that he wasn’t able to communicate how much the life that the Hattori’s had given him meant to him…That weighed heavily on his heart. The kids had needed him. The orphans that he took care of. But that’s the thing with orphans. They need parents. They need guidance. They need someone who can communicate with them. Truffle would never be exactly what they needed. And so he had found them parents. Did what any kind hearted guardian would do and gave them up when the time was right. It was all he could do.
But in his heart of hearts was an ache that left a hole in him. He could barely go a second without thinking….I never got to say it. I never told him how much I loved him. He was more than a brother to me, more than family, more then friend. They had a bond that nobody else could ever imagine. Going about his day, the big blue creature, his hair now fully grown back, imagined if the Saiyan prince ever gave a thought his way. To think anything else broke his heart. He wondered if Ninjin was feeling this same pain. The pang of missing his bond.
A Hoyo is given one bond in his lifetime. Sometimes, fortunately for the species, the bond is with another member of the species. Other times, the bond is formed out of deep respect, something like the agape kind of love. Truffle’s bond was formed from a very young age, with a very small boy. It transcended even agape.
He shook his head and focused on where he was. He was back on New Vegeta. It had been quite the trip from the orphanage, but he had successfully found all of the orphans from Humm’s prison homes. He was proud of this fact, though a little lonely when all was said and done. He couldn’t bare the thought of going back to the castle. He was sure that Ninjin wouldn’t want to see him. The prince, he had heard, had grown immensely powerful. What use would he have for Truffle now? He didn’t need a protector. If anything, Truffle was the one that needed protecting. Spending so much time as a guardian for the children had left him without much training. He would have to work on that if he wanted to stay alive in this world.
He had heard the stories of course, how Akassa had murdered the king. He couldn’t believe it. For such an incredible act of violence to occur…. He had always held a special pitying place in his heart for Akassa, and now his heart had grown somewhat cold. There was nothing he could have done to stop her, he knew that of course, he was wasn’t strong enough. But the king was the one who took him in and gave him to Ninjin. Without him, Truffle would never have been a Hattori.
Ninjin. The name rang out again and again in his head. He wondered if the Saiyan had heard any rumors of a blue furred creature roaming New Vegeta. He had kept a large cloak on, and a hat to cover his horns. Not much else he could do to hide himself. New Vegeta was mostly a Saiyan territory, but they had enough of the odd alien that such a creature as Truffle didn’t stir too much attention. Often that is. Occasionally he would find himself in a situation he had hoped to avoid. He wandered mostly down back alleys, trying to find himself a place to sleep for the night.
You best not be planning on stopping here, freak.
A large brutish man stepped out from behind a dumpster. Truffle held up his hands in surrender, knowing that a fight would probably spell out bad news for the both of them. He didn’t really have it in his heart to fight this man, and he was hoping that the man didn’t have it in his heart to attack him. He was still, of course over seven feet tall and hugely muscular underneath his fur coat. The man didn’t seem to have any pause at all and walked up to Truffle. He came to about Truffle’s chest.
Are you deaf? I said to get out of here.
Truffle of course, lacked the vocal dexterity to say much more than a slight groan. The man took this, of course, as a sign that Truffle was going to attack him, and threw a right hand. It caught Truffle square in the jaw and sent him reeling backwards, hitting the brick of the wall behind him. He hadn’t fought in months, so his reaction time was off. The man swung again, and Truffle moved in time, the man’s fist giving a sickening crack as it landed in the brick.
Truffle again held up his hands, attempting to make it clear he didn’t want to fight this man.
The man looked around, picked up a bottle and smashed in on the ground, leaving a dangerous, deadly edge to it. It was clear this was going to end one of two ways, with the man unconscious, or Truffle dead.
The man swung the bottle and Truffle leapt backwards, shedding the trench coat he had been wearing. With this he was able to maneuver much easier. He found, he thought, that fighting was much like riding a bike. If you don’t do it for a while it’s a little wobbly at first, but after a moment you can pick it up like you never left it at all. The man swung again and Truffle ducked, swinging his massive hand up and catching the man in the gut with a vicious punch. The man let out a huge breath of air as all the air he had in him left his body. He buckled over, and then recovered. Truffle shook his head as the man slashed at him again with the bottle. He was really going to have to knock this poor drunk out.
He punched his hand into the ground, covering his fist with a rock. He twirled around and threw it at the man, glancing it off the man’s head. He was out cold. Truffle went over to make sure that the man was still breathing, then put his trench coat over him so he wouldn’t freeze to death while he was passed out. The kindness he offered strangers who had just tried to kill him astounded even himself. It was a trait that Ninjin had so admired in him.
Ninjin.
Truffle clenched his jaw. There was that mysterious pull drawing him towards the castle. Why else had he come back to New Vegeta? There was no real other reason than the simple fact that he needed to be with Ninjin again. It might take a while to get used to the Hattori family again. But he would have to try. He gritted his teeth, and set off for the castle.

The feeling on New Vegeta could best be described as uneasy. It hung in the air like a cloud, and none were untouched by it. The sounds of construction could be heard all day and night, and though many complained of headaches, it was better than the occasional shrieks of pain from the wounded. There was not enough senzu beans to go around, and many of their healing tanks were damaged in the attack. With no word from Earth, and little aid from elsewhere, the wounded were treated the old fashioned way, and there were precious few Saiyan doctors.
Truthfully it was hard to blame the Saiyans for the unease, so much had happened recently that had shaken their world and turned it on its ass. First there was the attack by the church. Then Akassa killed their King, queen, and the boy-prince Leke and claimed the throne from the crown prince. There was nothing Ninjin could have done, having been sent on a secret mission somewhere shortly after the attack by the church. No one knew exactly where he was sent, and many believed it to have been a conspiracy somehow set up by Akassa to get him out of the way. Still others knew the truth, had Ninjin been there he would number among the dead. Akassa was the legendary Super-Saiyan. No one had before attained such a level of power.
And then another one had shown up. It was as if they were coming out of the woodwork. Nasu, a local known by most, was the mythical Super-Saiyan as well. How many more would turn out to be. Some began to just expect it to happen to them naturally, some were more intelligent than that and began vigorously training their bodies hoping to attain the form. Many wondered if the crown prince would suddenly appear in the form of a super Saiyan and reclaim his rightful place. Others were loyal to Akassa, her having finally taken out the complacent Hattoris and ushered in a new age of Saiyan dominance. Or at least that’s what they were hoping for. Still others supported the rightful king, though one could only do so in secret.
Endou Nakamura was one of those people. And how could she not be, she having given birth to their child together. She knew Ninjin better than precious few, and knew that if there was one true ruler of the Saiyan people, it was Ninjin Hattori. He had been bred his entire life for the position, and had recently become the man she knew he could be, one that she would be proud to follow. Many felt the same way. Still others didn’t care who was ruling them, as long as they were safe from another attack from the church.
So lost in thought was Endou that she almost didn’t notice the blue monster step out from the alleyway. She stopped short, momentarily terrified. Then she recognized the creature. It was Truffle! Ninjin’s best friend and life-long companion. Though last she had heard he was raising orphans on Omega. What in the world was he doing back here? And he looked terribly upset about something. Taking a glance down the alleyway she knew why. He had been forced to attack someone.
Endou had spent a lot of time around the big blue creature, spent in the mutual company of Ninjin, so she understood his communication problems, and being the genius that she was put two and two together. It was no doubt the Saiyans own fault he was lying where he was in the condition he was in.
“Truffle! What in the world are you doing here! It’s so good to see you!” The smaller Saiyan woman gave the big blue Hoyo a quick hug and then pulled away to look at him.
“Oh I wish Ninjin was here to see you. He was so proud when he told us all what you were doing on Omega. Oh but he missed you so much. Not a day would go by when he wouldn’t get a sad faraway look on his face, and we all knew he was thinking about you.” It had been hard for the prince, going through everything he had in the short time he had without his best friend by his side, everyone who knew him knew that. Endou noticed the direction that the Hoyo kept looking. The palace. Had he heard? No doubt he was confused by all the destruction around him and the repair effort.
“A lot has happened recently Truffle. This isn’t a safe place for us to talk. Come with me.” Then if she let him, she would take him by the paw and lead him to her house, mercifully spared from the attack and not too far from where they were. She would do her best to avoid being seen by anyone. Truffle was Ninjin’s most faithful ally, and that made him an enemy of Akassa.
Once they made it to her house she would tell him everything that had occurred. She would start with The terrifying attack by the church, all of the casualties, no doubt he had already noticed her mechanical arm. Everything she knew she would tell him, the details of the poisoning of Tsyuo, Ninjin and Akassa’s fight with Aer Nin, Celeh and Leke’s fight with an assassin, Zeke’s fight with another member of the church. It had been brutal and devastating. Then she moved on to the War council. She didn’t know much about what was discussed inside, but it led to Ninjin leaving on a secret mission, and that was the important part to get over. Ninjin wasn’t here, he was gone. And no one knew where.
She placed her Saiyan hand on the Hoyo’s shoulder. No doubt the news would upset him.

“Truffle! What in the world are you doing here! It’s so good to see you!”
The words rang in Truffle’s ears like sweet bells. The smaller woman ran up to him and hugged him and he returned the hug with fervor, though being careful enough that his tree trunk like arms didn’t shatter her spine with too much enthusiastic hug crushing.
And then the bad news started coming. It flowed from her mouth like a waterfall of hurtful words. The Hoyo’s ears hurt with all of the terrible news.
The one thing that helped his aching heart was the news that Ninjin thought about him as often as he had the Saiyan prince. He had been worrying for so long that Ninjin’s affection for him stopped as soon as they were separated. He knew it to be false, but that’s how the Hoyo imprinting worked. As soon as they were away from their charge, they started feeling separation anxiety.
Endou took him by the paw and led him to the house that she lived in. Truffle ducked to get through the doorway and sat down with her. She proceeded to fill him in on everything that was going on while he was away. She spent a decent length of time filling him in on Akassa’s betrayal and murder of the king. Truffle knew of course, that this had happened, but the poisoning aspect was something that he hadn’t been prepared for. And then she told him about the war council that had formed and Ninjin’s sudden departure for a secret mission.
Truffle gasped when she told him that there were now two legendary super Saiyans. He couldn’t believe his ears. He had heard the myths of such a thing, but he had never expected to hear of one actually existing. Not just one, but two legendary super Saiyans just appearing suddenly. It was incredible. Truffle had to wonder to himself if maybe Ninjin was next in line. They had all come from the Hattori family at least. Ninjin wasn’t there. He was nowhere to be found. He was on a secret mission nowhere to be found, somewhere out in space. Endou placed her hand on his shoulder, and he stood up. He walked to the door and turned back to give her a look.
Truffle where are you going?
He looked at her, a long, steady look. And then he pointed up. He would go after Ninjin. He would find him, and he would help him with whatever he needed. He would travel the galaxy to find his prince.

The large blue creature took the news of his bond not being there exactly as Endou had foresaw he would. That was, not well. The distress on his face was evident, and even though he couldn't use words she felt she knew what he was thinking. Perhaps it was the close bond she herself shared with Ninjin, having carried his child. He stood and moved to the doorway. Their eyes met, and they just looked at each other for a long moment. Then the blue creature pointed upwards. He surely couldn't mean... Space? He meant to go after Ninjin?
"But Truffle... There's no way to get to where's he's gone... No one knows where that is. You'll wander space forever. Please don't do this. How would you even get there? Do you have a spaceship?" She didn't mean to cut him down like that, but she cared for the large blue alien. Also she cared for Ninjin. He would never forgive himself, never forgive her, if they let Truffle go off and get lost in space looking for Ninjin.
"But I have another way you can help him." She patted the couch next to her and would wait a few moments before continuing, whether Truffle had moved from the door or not.
"What Akassa did was terrible. She has no right to be queen right now, and there are those of us that support the true King in secret. The resistance needs you. You're so much stronger than any of us. If you train, you can become strong enough to make a difference. Ninjin will surely need your help upon his return." She pleaded with her eyes. Stay. Stay and help us. Ninjin needs you here.

It was an uneasy few moments, with Truffle standing in the doorway and Endou pleading with her eyes. She said that she had another way for the large blue alien to help his bond. He didn’t move, thinking it over. If he left, he would search forever to find Ninjin. He would spend the rest of his lifetime if that’s what it took to narrow down the location. But space was infinite….he could set off in the wrong direction and never see Ninjin again. He couldn’t deal with that possibility. Not without knowing what was said in the war council. She patted the seat next to her, the pleading in her eyes so evident it made Truffle want to weep. She cared about Ninjin too, in a different way, but the care they both had for the crown prince drew Truffle to her. He sat down on the couch, sending her up in the air a tiny bit. He was, after all, at least three times her weight.
The resistance needs you.
Those words stood out amongst the rest of them. He was listening to what she said, for sure, but those words echoed in his ears long after she had finished talking. What Akassa had done….and the crown now in her possession when it belonged to Ninjin….how unfortunate that was.
He of course couldn’t let that slide. The crown was Ninjin’s and Ninjin’s alone. Nobody else after Tsuyo could hold it. Nobody. Truffle had made a vow to make sure of that.
The resistance needs you.
On the other hand, Akassa far out-powered him. If he were to even think about challenging her, he would end up a bloody mess. Or worse. What would Ninjin do then? He would have lost his bond in a way far worse than orphans. He couldn’t join any resistance, he had fallen so far behind in his training in the past few months, he couldn’t possible put up any fight. He was sure that Akassa would have companions on her side that could easily take him out.
The resistance needs you.
Then again, he was a Hoyo, and Hoyo’s were the adaptation kings. If there was one thing that Hoyo’s could do it was adapt. So he would have to adapt to this new challenge, train hard, get his strength up to rival that of any of Akassa’s men, and take back the palace and get rid of the usurpers once Ninjin returned. He would do this for his bond. He would do this. He…but then again…if he was caught, Akassa would kill him for sure. Sure, she had never had a problem with him directly, but she of course had a problem with Ninjin, and what better way to get to Ninjin than killing those he cared about? He looked over at Endou. Joining would put her at risk too. He didn’t know how much Akassa knew of Endou, but if Truffle was caught as part of the resistance, Akassa would surely make the connection between the two of them.
The resistance needs you.
The resistance was the symbol of Ninjin on the ground. He looked at Endou’s pleading eyes once more. Ninjin needs you here, they seemed to scream out. The decision was weighing on him. One the one hand, he could risk it and attempt to find Ninjin sooner as opposed to later. On the other hand, he could be where he was most needed, and see Ninjin when he got back…if he lived long enough.
The resistance needs you.
There was never any doubt what he would choose. He would be where Ninjin needed him. He would do what his friend required, and be stronger when he returned, so that together they could stand a chance against Akassa. Ninjin would need his ally, his brother in arms, to be stronger so that they could take back the throne, and regain Ninjin’s rightful place as king.
He took another long look in Endou’s eyes, and nodded. He would stay. He would get stronger. For his bond.

The internal struggle that seemed to take place within the large blue fluffy creature lasted for a long time. His body filled the doorway. The resistance didn't have anyone as strong as Truffle. He was outmatched brutally by the two super Saiyans that were on New Vegeta, but perhaps with training he would be able to fight them. Not much was known about the Hoyo species, but for a long time the creature was the protector to the prince, and outmatched him in power. That was a long time ago, but perhaps with training… perhaps he could regain that power.
Truffle nodded, and some of the tension was released out of Endou. Ninjin would have never forgiven her had she not been able to stop his best friend from leaving and wandering space for all of eternity. The next step in integrating Truffle into the resistance was meeting the rest of the members. They left Endou’s room and walked briskly to the basement, taking care to stay away from the windows. The air was damp as they descended into the bowels of the apartment building. Endou grabbed hold of a washing-machine that was against the wall, a silly thing from Earth, but it served its purpose. Below the washing-machine was a door. She tugged it aside and descended.
The room they found themselves in was a fallout shelter, and there were four others in the room. A large muscular Saiyan who was close to the size of Truffle stood up as they descended, but sat down and visibliy relaxed once he saw Endou. A smaller, but no less tough-looking man in a tattered military uniform didn’t look up from picking his nails with a knife. Another female, this one not Saiyan, sat at a chair in front of an ancient looking computer, typing away rapidly. She turned and smiled at the big blue creature. The fourth member in the room was a thin male the blue alien might remember as the prince’s usual pilot. It was not a very impressive bunch.
“Well, this is us.” She said as the two stepped off the ladder and into the room. There was just enough space for everyone to be comfortable, but if another person was added to the room it would become cramped. When the alien was ready she would make the introductions.

Endou led him into the basement of the house. The house was a lot bigger than Truffle had thought it was going to be upon entering. He was very surprised when he entered the basement and saw a weird machine against the wall. He had never seen anything like that before, and he couldn’t help but wonder what it was for. Endou walked over to it and pushed it aside. Beneath it was a wooden door, another thing that was unusual on New Vegeta. They descended the stairs and a large muscular Saiyan stood up upon seeing Truffle, but he sat down quickly after seeing Endou. Not that it would have mattered anyway. The combined power levels of everyone in the room would not be enough to deal with Truffle if he decided to fight them. But he never would, and he was relieved when the Saiyan sat down. The small group of fighters looked very capable. He nodded in approval. Clearly he wasn’t going to be saying anything to them, but he would listen to whatever they had to say, and do anything that they needed him to do. Akassa wouldn’t be able to have such a firm grip on the city with the resistance. Truffle would do his damnedest to make sure that he poured oil in that iron grip that she had. After killing the man who rescued him, Akassa was now a sworn enemy of Truffle. And without Ninjin here to take her on, Truffle would have to do his best to be a saboteur. He was ready. He nodded to Endou.
