The impact, the force of a thousand bombs going off at once, the shear power sending quakes through the ground, miles away the force could be felt. Animals fled, the birds shiver, twist, their wings coming to life, springing into the skies they soared. Peace had been shattered, no longer tranquil, tainted the still day had become. Ash, dirt, dust filled the air, the once beautiful bright clouds turned dark, the quick burst of life went still. Lone standing where the trees once did, where their twisted flaming roots torn forth from the soil stood was a crater, smoke filled, dim light bellowing from its depths. The towering flames where slow to quell, devouring the dying fuel spread around its source, consume, death, consume, death, soon enough the field was barren leaving the lone crater to itself once again.
SYSTEM ACTIVE, PROGRAM AWAKEN
The low hum of motors filled the gray smoke filled air, from the cracked earth, the scorched soil came the wavering sounds, dysfunction from impact the sounds squealed, moaning for the pain to stop. Soon the wish came true, the sounds stops, leaving the still air to take over once more. Bellowing winds blew across the warped fields, dry leaves, brunt bark shifted into the winds, without an anchor the once life filled organisms took off into the skies, joining those that fled before.
LOCK DAMAGED, OVER RIDE COMMAND
An electronic hum quaked through the crater sending another rumble deep into the earth, each passing second the sound growing louder, higher in pitch till the point where it slipped from ones ears.
BOOM!
The world shook with the force, an raging inferno towering into the sky, miles around the new star could be seen, those trees that survived the impact fell to the force of the shock wave only to be enveloped in a sea of fire. Burning, tearing with the force of a young star the immediate area was soon purged of life, no stone was left unturned, no hole was left unexplored, life was extinct as far as a mile radius was concerned.
Time passed, the gray filled skies of day soon turned to a dusky night, stars filled the skies accompanying the low embers that dotted what was left of the forest. Crackling, smoldering through out the night, morning lights were a welcoming sight to the brunt lands, it was a welcomed sight thought it only showed the horrific destruction that had become of the lands. Life seemed dull, even the puffy white clouds lacked the luster they once did.
"It's this way!" The high pitched voice called out from over the hill.
"Come on sis! You know how short my legs are!" The second voice, much deeper, from a young male, his breath coming in deep heaves.
Racing up to the top of the hill the figures came into view, a young girl, a few years to becoming a full adult and a young boy, coming into his prime, an young adolescent. She was on the shorter side, her long orange hair fluttering in the winds; he was lanky, his body had yet to fill out though the workings of a man could be seen in his eyes. Breathing heavily the boy had to rest, bending over his hands rested on his knees as he took in deep lung fulls of sweet air. The female turned to the boy with a soft giggle, her hand covering her mouth as she did so.
"Kale, you're so slow! This is why everyone makes fun of you at track!" She laughed poking him in the sides.
"Cut it out! Just give me a year, and I'll whip your butt!" Taking a fake swing at the girl she danced off to the side playfully, trotting her way down the hill towards the crater she cast her eyes back at Kale.
"Come on! I wonder what it was?"
"Geez Mi, give me a break. It was probably just a chuck of space junk or something, you knows there's still tons of that stuff out there." Kale moaned loudly, trudging his way down the hill.
"Maybe, or maybe not. You were sleeeeeeping, so how would you know, Mr. Lightweight." Mi laughed again leaving Kale to groan softly.
Slowing down she waited till Kale caught up, making their way through the ashes of what was left of the forest the joy that had been inside Mi seemed to have escaped, leaving the looming silence holding in the air. Even though the sun was high in the sky shedding light over all that was to see in the lands it seemed... cold, as if someone hand moved a block of ice mere inches away from their skin, even the still burning ember held no loving warmth to them.
"Hey... maybe we should go...." Kale's words coming in chucks, his eyes wandering around their surrounds as if a wolf would jump out at them any second.
"Not yet, its just ahead, I want to see what could make just a fire like last night."
"Then we can go?"
"Then we can go. Now come on, see that crater its right there."
Kicking ash as they went their clothes were soon covered in the soot , their legs washed over with grey ash, dyeing their hair a light black, soon enough they looked as though mining would have come easily to them. Approaching the crater and eerie stillness filled the air, no longer was a gentle breeze pushing at their backsides, the world seemed to stop just for them, leaving them facing the smoldering hole. Standing upon the edge of the crater the two cast their eyes down into its depths, falling upon what was left of some unknown object, scraps of metal drove deep into the earth, the heat of the flames had clearly melted them as they had a similar look of a long brunt out candle.
"Wow... what do you think it was?" Mi question Kale.
"Space junk. Come on you saw it, lets go!" Kale stated as he was quick to whip around.
"Hold on...what's that?" Mi spoke, leaving Kale's shoulders to droop as he turned back around like a dog with its tail between its knees.
Small, shiny, almost like mercury the object lay near the center of the crater, surrounded by smoke it was almost unseen to the naked eye. Apart from the rest of the environment it appeared to be the only thing with any sense of life to it, swirling, shimmering though it did not move from its place, like liquid in a shifting jar. Gleaming from the sun it almost seemed as though it was alive....
"I'm gonna go check it out!" Mi said sliding down the hill side before Kale had a chance to stop her.
"No wait! Come on lets go home!" He plead but Mi's mind was else where, her eyes locked on the orb shaped object, what could it be? Was it rare? Was it valuable? She needed to know, to explore what it was. Lust for knowledge was upon her mind.
Sliding down the burnt hillside she could feel the warmth of the soil beneath her shoes, though the air still held a nip of chill to it, the hole itself was quite warmer than what she had expected. Over her shoulder Mi could hear the pleading calls of Kale but she simply waved him off with her arm, her attention was on the orb now. Side stepping shards of metal as they prodded through the soil Mi carefully made her way forward, it was slow going, trying not to slice herself upon any sharp object, but soon she found herself closing in. Inch by inch her body grew closer, with ever step the orb seemed to grow brighter, its once dull silver was blooming as if calling for her, no longer was the liquid lax in its movements, dancing now as it was almost as if it knew she was coming.
"What is it...." MI question now only but a few feet away.
Swaying slightly Mi stopped now but a foot away from the strange object, she couldn't make heads or tails of what she was seeing here... was it alive? Was it simply a piece of art? It looked as though it could have been, on its surface seemed to be small pieces of electronics while the rest was a ball of silver liquid, moving faster and faster as she gazed over it. Having waited long enough Mi reached her hand out, her index finger slowly moving its way to the object. Suddenly Mi gasped as tendril made up of the silver liquid popped out from the rest, like running water it seemed as though it would fall right back into the pool but it held there, slowing almost like an eye it moved in a small circle. Confused but drawn to the object Mi stuck her hand out though went no further, waiting to see what might happen.
Adjusting to the new world around it the small tentacle moved in the air, sensing what it was that had woken it up.
Life...
Here...
The simple thought rang through its mind, there was little thought to it all, just programming that had been built in, like a horse that knew insistently how to walk the silver arm moved close to Mi's out stretched hand, not knowing just what to expect from first contact.
Friend...
Foe...
Something... else?
Gently landing like a rose peddle on the surface on a pond the tentacle landed, leaving Mi shocked at what she saw before her.
Warmth...
Beating...
Life....
Life....
Life....
Life.
Turning her head back towards the lip of the crater Mi looked up at Kale who at this point looked as though he was going to crap himself in fear.
"You have to come check this out, its the coolest thi-"
Suddenly Mi felt a strong grip around her arm as her head whipped back around to see the silver substance had enveloped all of her forearm and was quickly making its way up her body. A scream filled the air, but it was cut off just as quickly, muffled yells filled the air, falling to the ground her body danced about dust flying into the air with her struggling movements. Yelling emerged from the hill side, Kale hollered at the top of his lungs, yet he kept his position, fear locking his legs from moving beneath him.
Soon the movements died down, the weight of the liquid was upon Mi, pining her down with its mass, lungs running out of air, everything seemed to stop. Silver spread across her body, it shifted, moving about, each line of her frame was filled in, looking as though a silver cast had been constructed of her. Slowly the silver settled, the liquid vanished leaving only a body behind... though it was unlike the one before. The once bright orange hair was shimmering silver... almost seeming as if it was alive... opening up its eyes for the first time they were just as white as her hair, the liquid dancing about its skull.
"...Mi....?" Kale's weak trembling voice called out from above, fear was embedded deep into his mind, shocked, unsure of what to make of what he had just seen before him.
With a burst of energy it stood up, within a blink on an eye it was on its new feet, feeling the earth between its toes for the first time. Eying the sky with its own eyes for the first time a low coo escaped from its lips, sounds, noise, hearing, even taste, it was new, it was fresh, it was alive. Turning its head towards Kale its silver shimmering eyes met with his, her pink glossy lips opened up slowly towards him.
"I am nobody, who are you? Are you... nobody too?"
