Aaron Alexander looked out of the window of Prescott High School room 104 and sighed. Wind gently blew bits of snow from the branches of the trees and he wished he too could be out there with them. Something about the winter always made him want to be outside, the cold never bothering him too much. Often he would spend afternoons outside in nothing more than jeans and a t-shirt, the other kids questioning and his mother yelling, but he didn’t mind it. In the front of the room Mrs. Mullally, his algebra teacher, droned on about the Pythagorean Theorem. It was nearly enough to put the young teenager to sleep, but the large coffee he had drunk that morning insured his fully awake alertness. And so stare out the window was the best he could do in order to pass the time.
It seemed like it would never end, this math class of his. The gentle sound of the person behind him snoring filled his ears and made Aaron smile. It seemed he wasn’t the only one who found Mrs. Mullally’s lectures boring.
Icarus A voice seemed to whisper inside his head. Aaron looked around for the source but there was nothing, just the attentive students looking forwards paying attention while the rest of the class looked elsewhere or snoozed in their chairs. The young man chalked it up to his mind playing tricks on him and went back to staring absent mindedly out the window.
ICARUS The voice was so much closer now, as if right in his ear. The young man turned and a handsome elder gentleman stood next to him, a smile on his face like a father observing his son for the first time. He was immaculately dressed, a shining golden tuxedo that looked anything but gaudy on him though the glow seemed to be coming from within the man himself rather than the clothing he wore. It was hard to place his features, but he had kind eyes, though they seemed to hide a bit of malice. His gaze was off putting to the teenager, and the man was leaning in so close… Aaron stood quickly and withdrew from the man. How did he get in the class room and what was he doing yelling in people’s ears?
It was then that he noticed that the voice in the front of the room had ceased. Mrs. Mullally was no longer droning on about a squared plus b squared. The young man looked at her and was shocked to find that she wasn’t moving, her mouth open as though she was about to speak. None of the other kids in the room were moving either, all seemingly frozen in mid action. Terror gripped the young man’s heart. What was happening?! When he looked back at the gentlemen it was clear that it was his doing.
“There is no need to be afraid my child. I mean you no harm. In fact I mean the exact opposite for you, my son.” The way he said son it was clear that he meant offspring rather than a simple turn-of-phrase. Aaron looked at him as though he were an alien.
“Am I… Am I hallucinating or something?” it was the only logical expilation to him. Perhaps he had a case of sudden onset mad cow disease or something of the like, something that could make him hallucinate so wildly. The man smiled and shook his head softly, chuckling to himself as he did so.
“My son there is nothing to fear. I am Aon. Your father.” Aon? Who the hell was Aon? Aaron thought that he remembered some lunatics picketing outside his school about not letting half-Saiyans into the school using the name. The man nodded as if reading Aaron’s mind.
“You’re my dad?” The teenager said disbelievingly. There were definitely similarities about the two men the more the boy studied the face of the man in front of him. His mother had always told him his father had left when he was very young, could it be that his father had instead been… what was he? A god? A demon? Clearly he was something with great power in order to be able to freeze time and space around them. The man nodded.
“That is correct my child. Your name is Icarus, and you were born to do great things. You have reached the age where it is time you knew your destiny.” He waved a single hand nonchalantly and a shooting pain coursed up and down Aaron’s back. The boy gasped in pain and his hands reached out to find purchase on the desk in front of him. Breathing became difficult as the pain wracked his body. Just as quickly as it came the pain ceased.
“What… what did you do to me?” the teenager asked panting; his body feeling like it had just ran a marathon. There was something different about his body too, it felt stronger and lighter. He realized the air going into his lungs didn’t feel the same as it once had.
“I removed the spell I placed on you when you were little, hiding who and what you really are. You are now as you should be. Whole. Pure.” The man said the words as if they were the most important thing in the world. Pure. That was exactly what the man was feeling at that moment. The shortness of breath passed.
“Tell me child, what do you know about the Universal Church of One?” The man asked as he rested himself on the edge of the desk where Aaron had been sitting, his hands together resting on his knee.
“Nothing really, I had never paid attention to any of that stuff before.” Aaron answered honestly. Faith and religion had never found their way to the boy, and he had lived his life as an atheist up until that moment. It was clear to him however that there was something more about the man sitting in front of him. Aon. Was this God? The man nodded.
“I am the god worshipped and beloved by the Universal Church of One. The pure One. And you are my son Icarus. I have a mission for you. The main edict of the church is as follows; beings were created to be whole and unique. A species that dies off was meant to do so, and should remain extinct, such is the way of the universe.” His eyes turned angrily towards the heavens, seemingly leering at some unknown object. When he turned the smile returned to his face, a look of pride in his eyes.
“Our greatest enemies are the Saiyans. Their very existence is an affront to every edict the church has. Mating with humans, coming back from extinction… they need to be dealt with. That is where you come in.” Aarons eyebrows rose at his father’s harsh words. A feeling of hatred filled him when Aon mentioned Saiyans, one he had never felt before. Still the god in front of him was asking a lot. Despite having no interest of aliens or politics, he had heard of the powers of Saiyans. Everyone had. They were a strong race, and Aaron was just a fourteen year old boy. How was he supposed to fight, let alone commit genocide, on a race so powerful? His father smiled yet again.
“I have given you the powers of our race. Use them.” And just like that he was gone, leaving behind fervor within the young man that nothing could quell. It was his destiny to destroy the saiyans. It was his destiny to destroy the half-breeds of the universe. He unfurled his wings, and then realized he had wings.
Gasps of disbelief surrounded him, and he realized that time was once again moving at its regular pace. He smiled, the looks of shock on the faces of those around him appealing to him. They were gazing on his true form. His gaze fell upon a half Saiyan girl in his class, a girl who up until mere moments ago had been his friend, and he smiled. Their eyes met and she shuddered.
“Aaron, what’s happened to you?” she asked concernedly. Two holes ripped through her head as the energy left his eyes, they instinctively knowing what to do when looking upon a half breed cur.
“My name is Icarus.” With a whoosh he threw himself backwards, his golden wings taking him out of room 104 of Prescott High school and out into the world to do his father’s bidding. Eradicate the saiyans.
