Nasu was not used to being the weakest man in any given room. He found that he really did not like the experience. Nasu had instantly gone from the strongest man on the streets, someone people looked up to, admired, came to for permission and begged his favor to the weakest man in the company. And that did not sit well with him. Granted before the people he could over power weren’t exactly high society, actually they were the lowest of the low, they were the homeless and destitute of New Vegeta. But still Nasu was a god among them. And now…
Nasu had been the weakest man in the entire company for about a week. A week in which he trained harder than he’d ever trained in his life. He refused to remain a weakling, a liability. And soon he was climbing the ranks. His ability to sense energy let him find opponents who were at least near his strength to challenge and one buy one they began to fall and Nasu began to grow. He knew he was still a long way from the top but little by little Nasu would become better.
After a month of constant training and pushing himself far beyond his limits he finally got called into Tejun’s office. It was the first time he had seen the man since their fight and Nasu was eager for another round. He could feel it even resting Tejun was still far beyond his ability but something inside Nasu longed to fight him. To push himself even further in an attempt to win. Luckily before Nasu could say something stupid Tejun spoke.
“Nasu, you have been here a month correct?”
Nasu opened his mouth to reply when a raised hand from Tejun cut him off “That was more rhetorical. You have been here a month and already I can feel you’ve grown a considerable amount stronger. You’ve been challenging other fighters, no doubt you too can sense their energy levels and have been taking on people closer to your own level. That’s smart, had you challenged someone out of your league you would probably be dead by now, or at least useless to the company. Now as I was saying you have been here for a month, in this time I’ve allowed you to train and become stronger, however you have done nothing for the company. Nothing to advance the Red Flag. You speaking frankly have done shit. And that is about to change.” He looked at Nasu assessing him “I have to ask, a lot of people come in here with lofty expectations, but when it comes down to it we’re mercenaries. Hired killers. You don’t look like the kind of man who would go soft on me but I need to know no bullshit. Have you ever taken another life before?”
Nasu looked down remembering for the first time just how many deaths he was responsible for and once again questioning the kind of man he was. While on his quest for vengeance he had done some terrible things. But all for a good cause, a noble cause. To kill an unjust king he had taken dozens of lives, if not more. But he was still a good man wasn’t he?
In the end he couldn’t find an answer to his question but that wasn’t important right now. Tejun’s question was simply had he killed before and to that Nasu could firmly answer “Yes sir.”
If Tejun noticed Nasu’s pause he chose not to say anything. He simply looked at Nasu again and said “Good, in that case I have an assignment for you.”

“Good, in that case I have an assignment for you.” Tejun said. And a shiver ran up Nasu’s spine. His first real job for The Red Flag, a chance to truly earn his place. Tejun seemed to sense Nasu’s mind racing and he waited for him to process before moving on.
“Nasu, do you know what makes the Red Flag red?” Nasu was confused by the question, it was just the name of the organization. It sounded pretty bad ass granted but was there meaning behind it? Nasu just shook his head no instead of saying something stupid. A move Tejun seemed to approve of.
“As melodramatic as it’s going to sound The Red Flag is red with blood. Our blood, our client’s blood, our victim’s blood. One way or another coins are exchanged and then blood is shed. It’s the life we’ve chosen but it’s not for everyone. Now everytime I deem a new recruit worthy, I call them into my office and I ask them the same question. Have you ever taken another life before? And inevitably they always answer yes. Now sooner or later the truth will come out that some of these people were lying. And when that happens you have an untested man or woman watching you back. Someone who when the moment comes and your life is on the line may hesitate. And that Nasu is unacceptable. We put our lives on the line every time we take a job and if we’re going to trust you, we have to know we can depend on you. With that in mind the first job I assign to every recruit is the same. You have to kill someone.”
With that Tejun paused and looked at Nasu as if expecting him to say something. But if this was supposed to come as a surprise Nasu had figured out what was coming by halfway through the speech. He gave no expression that this would be an issue and so Tejun moved on.
“This is harder for some than others. I saw you when you first came in here and I’ve seen the changes that to you in the past 4 years since you first applied. I believe you when you say you’ve taken a life, but this will be different. The crown has hired us to bring back a fugitive. They are indifferent whether this man comes back alive or dead. But I am ordering you right now to end their life. If you can’t do this, you can take them directly to the crown’s justice and you will get a sizeable reward. You can keep that reward and consider your time with the Red Flag over. Or you can kill this person who you may or may not be able to spare and come back here and from that day on be a brother. In the end the decision is yours. You’ve also said you can read, this folder contains all of the information you will need to find the fugitive. Choose well.”
And with that he slid a folder across his desk towards Nasu. Nasu picked it up with more reluctance than he was willing to admit. Could he kill someone who didn’t need to die? What would he do if the man had done nothing wrong? What if this man surrendered? Nasu picked up the folder hoping the man looked evil, hoping the man had killed children, hoping for something that wasn’t there. As he looked down he saw a normal saiyan face. The man had two kids, and a wife. He was only guilty of trying to steal from the crown for them and getting caught. How could Nasu live with himself if he ended this mans life just for his own selfish ambition to be stronger. But then how could he ever confront Tsyuo and give his mother’s spirit peace if he didn’t?
Folder in hand Nasu left the office without saying another word. It was only when he was halfway down the hall he realized he should have asked to be dismissed. It wasn’t till he was outside in the fresh air he realized Tejun wouldn’t be upset. In the end his thoughts circled back to the life in the folder, thinking again it came down to a murder for his ambition and still not sure which would win.

Nasu read the file for what had to be the tenth time. Damn it this wasn’t getting any easier. He had stolen from the crown it should be easy enough kill him. Nasu laughed as he realized the only reason for him to try and get stronger was he wanted to kill the crown. This man had abandoned his family to run, Nasu had never spoken to his family till he was 13 and even then never told them they were related. Damn it all Nasu had killed more people than he’d ever want on his conscience. But then he had no choice but to kill them...didn’t he?
Nasu wrestled with a conscience that he didn’t know existed until minutes ago as he flew out of the compound. One way or another he needed to find this Nigeru and who knows maybe Nasu would get lucky and the man would do something stupid and attack him. That would solve all his issues, it would make it easy to kill him and it would still be ok.
Nasu flew to the outskirts of New Vegita, the report gave the man’s home address and Nasu figured talking with his family was as good a place to start as any. Nassu knocked on the door and prayed that no one was home. His prayers went unanswered as a middle aged woman answered the door baby in her arms.
“Who are you?” she asked skipping over pleasantries.
Nasu decided to follow her example. “My name is Nasu Nun, I’m from the Red Flag and I’m looking for your husband Nigeru” he saw her face grow visibly paler when he mentioned the Red Flag. It wasn’t for nothing they had the reputation as the best merc squad around.
“I- I don’t know where he went. He was just trying to help us. We needed food and his job wasn’t providing enough. He just took what we needed to survive he’s not a criminal.” She stammered.
Damn it. She needed to stop, she kept humanizing this man who Nasu had to kill. If he didn’t it was back to being homeless to being worthless on the streets.
“May I come in m’am I just have a few questions.”
The woman looked too shaken up to answer so instead she just stepped out of the doorway to let Nasu in. As he walked in he saw the bare minimum for an apartment. A bed in the corner where the 4 of them obviously slept together, a table where the family ate with a few chairs, a stove and fridge, this wasn’t the kind of family that could afford a bolt hole for the man to run to. Which meant he couldn’t have gone too far. As that thought crossed his mind a girl no older than 5 ran up to Nasu.
“Are you here to bring my daddy back?” she asked with the innocence only the truly young can manage. “Are you gonna bring him back home, mommy and I miss him every night.”
She said it with the confidence of someone who trusts others implicitly. Nasu smiled at the girl remembering when he was that young and that innocent. Inside a part of Nasu broke, knowing he would be doing to the girl what Tsyuo did to him. Was he even capable of that?
The girl rambled on clearly just happy for someone else to share her story. “Mommy said that Daddy can’t come home from Uncle Hogo’s house for a while but we all really really miss him. Can you bring him home pretty please.”
The look of horror on the wife’s face confirmed the girls words and Nasu’s stomach dropped. He could have gone back to Tejun and said he never found him. He could have said all the leads came up empty and the man was a ghost and gone forever. But now with one sentence and one look Nasu knew where the man was. His folder had listed all of Nigeru’s relatives and their addresses but Hogo had been far enough down the list that he probably never would have tried there if not for the girl. It was he thought a rather good hiding spot.
The girl finally noticed the stricken look on her mother’s face and began to cry. The mother turned as if to block Nasu from leaving by force then looked down at the baby in her arms and decided to beg instead.
“Please, whatever you do spare him. Bring him to the crown for justice but please for the sake of my family you have to, please.” Nasu pushed past her sickened.
He got back out into the alley and threw up. His stomach now empty of everything he’d eaten in the last day Nasu continued to dry heave. There was no way he could do this. The man had a family, a family who clearly loved him and needed him more than he needed a merc group. He had to find the man and warn him what was coming.
He flew a few blocks over and pounded on Hogo’s door.
“Open up hurry!” Nasu shouted inside not knowing if Tejun had sent anyone to watch him to ensure the job was done.
The door opened quickly inward as a small wiry man exploded out at Nasu. He swung a fist in a looping punch which Nasu ducked easily. Nasu knocked out Hogo with one quick jab to the stomach and entered the residence. Hogo’s house was no more furnished than Nigeru’s had been and it took only moments to find Nigeru on the floor whimpering.
Nasu approached him and put a hand on his shoulder. The man was clearly crying, and all of a sudden a flashback hit Nasu so hard it almost knocked him off his feet. He could see his mother on the floor crying just like this. Tsyuo standing over her whispering words of comfort before brutally murdering her. Nasu knew his mother’s ghost would haunt him till the day he died but could he give her any peace if he just gave up his quest for revenge. If he let his mother’s killer rule free just because he was weak willed?
But how could he kill this man after all he’d been through all he’d seen.
Decision made Nasu put a hand on the side of his face.
“Nigeru, Nigeru calm down. Everything is going to be alright. I spoke with your wife and daughter.”
Nigeru looked up at him for the first time. Tears in his eyes still.
“I did everything I could for them, please.”
“I know.” Nasu said putting his other hand on the other side of Nigeru’s face trying to comfort him. “I know you did, you have to trust me alright?”
Nigeru nodded and Nasu snapped his neck in one quick motion.
*****
Hours later Nasu walked back into Tejun’s office and deposited Nigeru’s corpse at the front of his desk.
Tejun looked up at Nasu as if seeing him truly for the first time. Tejun reached in his desk and pulled out a pin of a red flag waving.
“There is a fully stocked bar down the hall to the right. From now on you are to wear this pin at all times as long as you are a member of the Red Flag.” Finally Tejun stood up looking Nasu full in eyes and sighed. “I always hope new recruits fail this part of the test. But you’ve passed with flying colors. Welcome brother.”
