The creaky wooden doors gave into the force of Diagon’s hand as he pushed his way inside the bar, where it might not have been a five star hotel it did seem to have loads of alien life standing around drinking from their mugs. Apparently word of what had happened outside had not reached them yet, which is just the way Anri wanted it. He got the feeling that these people were not very accepting of new people on the station, given the situation of things around here he could understand why that was. The massive amount of foot traffic and ships that flew by the population of the station was probably more than it could sustain, just like the bunker they had back on Riva only so many people could fit inside before it became a safety hazard.
Rather and try not to attract more attention than he already had he decided to let Diagon to do the talking, though being a six foot tall foreign alien it might have been a little hard not to stick out. Walking up to the bar Diagon began to chat with bartender, glancing around the room Anri looked at the aliens that filled the bar. Though his focus was else where he still managed to listen to what Diagon was saying to the alien.
“Hey their Mika, how have you been?”
“Ah you know drunken slobs and jello shots. Same shit different day.”
“Ha indeed something’s never change do they?”
“Ya I guess not, so what will it be? The usual, sweet heart?”
“Please, two of them if you don’t mind.”
“Of course I wouldn’t forget about Zefk- hey where is the cuddly dwarf at?” She asked with worry in her voice.
“Oh worry not Mika he’s quiet alright just a tad tired from our last endeavor. He’s down at the maintenance bay getting the ship fixed up.”
“You still have that piece of junk? I thought you were going to upgrade to something safer, not to mention faster.”
“Some things came up that required greater attention I’m sorry to say, but it doesn’t look like a new ship will be in the picture for a long time.”
“Aw I’m sorry dear, we’ll here’s your drinks. Why did you order two if Zefk isn’t here?”
“Ah my apologizes the second one is for my new friend here. Don’t be shy now Anri come and meet the pretty lady.” He gave a coughing laugh out.
Sluggishly he made his way through the crowd of people pushing through them with his large size, usually one might get annoyed if they had been pushed out of the way but given the amount of alcohol that was in their systems they could give less of a . Making it up to the counter he finally got a good look at the woman, given from her low cut shirt she could have been one of the ladies that were selling their goods up front. Scales ran down the length of her body though not appearing to be rough but smooth given by the light as it bounced off of them. Most of her hair was tied into a bun at the back of her head though a few strand managed to fall into her eyes which were a deep shade of purple. Just from first glance at her he had guessed her to be some sort of reptile given her skin but seeing a small pair of gills sticking out slightly behind her ears he changed his option that she was amphibian or even a highly evolved fish, but then again weren't they all. Even with the tattered bar and clothes that showed more off that they probably should she generally seemed happy about her job at the bar even wearing a smile on her smooth face.
“Hey there.” Anri mumbled out.
“Hi there.” She reached her hand out, she took a hold of his shaking it vigorously. Even with her tiny hands she had quite a strong grip for someone with a small build, it gave him a small smile across his face. Strong hands were a good sign that someone was a hard worker, never taking the easy path in life rather working for everything they had. I made him wonder why the bar was in such a poor condition, one such as her self would most likely try and keep it in a presentable condition.
“Think you’re the first of your kind I’ve seen around these parts and I’ve been on this station for thirty years.”
“Thirty years? You can’t be a day over twenty.”
Giggling she leaned over the bar to Diagon. “I like this one, good find.”
"One could preform a vivisection to find out correct age."
"What was that?"
"I didn't hear anything." He chuckled putting the cube behind his back.
“Well anyone that’s a friend of Diagon is a friend of mine, so find a table and enjoy the drink hun.” She gave the two a wink.
Reaching up towards the counter Diagon took a hold of one of the flagons and passed it too Anri, he would have taken both of them but holding two drinks and walking with a cane in a sea of people would have proved to be difficult.
“I hate to ask it but Zefk is usually the one to plow through these people for me would you-.”
“Not a problem.”
Taking the lead he drove into the aliens plowing a pathway for Diagon to easily walk through, his cane tapping across the metal flooring. Eventually he spotted a clear table, pushing through the people he took a seat in the squishy seating, Diagon doing the same cross from.
“Ah much better, damn leg is going to drive me crazy.” He mentioned taking a sip from his drink.
“Ya I’ve been meaning to ask you about that, if you don’t mind that is.” The curiosity of his leg had been pressing his mind, finding it more and more difficult not to ask.
“Oh not at all you’re not the first one that has asked me about that and your certainly won’t be the last.” He gave a small chuckle, taking another sip from his drink he cleared his throat.
“It happened quite a few years ago. Zefk and I went to start up a new harvester on a distant world, I think it was…oh six or so light years away. Anyway first scans on the planet reviled that there high amounts of Iron oxide in the atmosphere in case you don’t know that is rust. Particles of rust were blanketing the planet’s atmosphere, but were one finds rust one can find iron. With such large amounts of Iron oxide in the air we would have been crazy not to investigate further."
“I’m very familiar with chemical reactions, something we’re all taught while we in the academy.”
“Good, good. Glad to hear it. So large iron deposits right. Anyway it was a great opportunity for us and it didn’t look like any large corporation had claimed the world yet, so we packed up and set off. It was a high gravity world and given its small size it was a good sign that the planet was full of heavy metals. We braced our self for the more difficult than normal landing, once set down on the surface we suited up for protection and then set out.” Taking a sip from his drink he looked Anri in the eye.
“Have you ever been in a blizzard before?”
“Uh…what’s a blizzard?”
“Whats a-! You have never seen ice, or snow before?”
“Umm no… I know what ice is though.”
“How have you never seen snow before!” He questioned.
“Riva, my home, is too warm to produce ice naturally on its surface.”
“Must be one hell of a green house effect.”
“Well that and Riva is only 85 million miles away from its home star and that combined with a dense atmosphere of gasses keeps the average temperature on the surface around…90 degrees year round. There are color parts like near the poles where it gets done to around 80, but for the most part it sunny and hot.”
“Interesting, would explain why you have never seen a blizzard before. A blizzard is like the sandstorm you experienced back on the planet we met you on, except instead of sand its tiny particles of snow.”
“Huh, sounds blinding and cold.”
“That’s one way to put it.”
“It was as thick as a blizzard but it was purely rust in the air. Couldn’t see more than a few inches out from us, I thought it was best to back to the ship and head home out but Zefk thought otherwise. The man doesn’t talk much but when he does I respect his opinion, so we went through with the plan. Deciding to search nearby canyon we thought we might find an iron deposit that had been revealed by the splitting rock. During the search a chuck of the canyon walls fell down the side, we couldn’t even see it coming with all the particles in the air. Landing on me it crushed my leg and pinned me too the ground, even though its been years I can still feel it, the weight pressing down on me. Zefk…he’s a strong one, but he couldn’t get the rock off. Leaving to go get help I was stuck there pinned under that rock for more than a day, when I finally got to a hospital they told me that since the blood had been cut off from my leg for so long that the muscle had begun to rot. There were options that could fully repaired my leg, but I didn’t have near enough money to cover the cost so we took the cheaper option. I went through surgery and they removed the decayed part of the muscle, 6 weeks and 5 surgeries later I hobbled out of the hospital.” Looking down into his cup his finger traced the rim.
Anir tried to imagine how it would be liked to be pinned in such condition as Diagon had been, even with his gills he could have only breathed for so long before they would get clogged with iron particles. His armor would defiantly done much to prevent such a addict to his legs but Diagon had not been as lucky as he had been.
“Wow that’s quite a story…is the pain-.”
“Bad? Quite, I’ve gotten slightly used too it over the years but every day I’m in pain. With all the meds I take I barely come out even after a month’s work.”
“Ah I see…well I don’t think I have a story that can top that one.”
“Ha it’s quite alright, I wasn’t expecting you too. I’d rather have a good conversation with you than a depressing one. Tell me, what is your world like?”
“Huh, were to start? Well you already know it’s hot year around there, what else do you want to know?”
“Well what are your people like?”
“Military trained warriors.”
“Everyone?”
“Every single one of us.”
“Dear god… it’s like a planetary army….”
“I’m sorry, dear what?”
“God, is what I said.”
“What’s that?”
“You don’t know what god is?”
“No I’ve never heard of that word before, what is it? Can I eat it?”
“Can you eat it! What? No! Does your planet not have a religion?”
“A what?”
“That’s amazing, I don’t think I’ve never heard of a civilization that hasn’t had a religion before!”
“Still in the dark here….”
“Right sorry, umm well, a god is a deity of higher power that is usually held in high regards by a society. They worship the deity in many different ways, prayers, temples, maybe even sacrifices. It's divine whim is forced upon his people whether it be who lives or dies that day, the weather, everything really. The god is the answer too what built everything around them, the ground, skies and even life; using its super natural powers to create life itself.”
Anri looked at Diagon with a bewildered stare on his face.
“Wow…that…that is stupid.”
“Ha, well don’t tell that to others they might not like the idea of you calling their lord and creator stupid. What do your people think created life then?”
“Science.”
“That’s it?”
“Yep, science can give a direct answer too any of life’s questions.”
“But you don’t know how life started?”
“Just because the answer is not known yet, doesn’t mean it won’t be found, and saying that some ‘god’ created everything is just the lazy man’s way of getting a quick answer.”
“I suppose that’s one way too think of it, but like I said it’s probably best to keep that opinion too yourself. People have been know too kill for their gods.”
“Another reason it’s stupid.”
“Yes well nothing either one of us can do about it so shut your mouth and drink your fill before it gets room temp.”
Anri looked down into the flagon at the cool brown liquid with a slight disgust on his face, pushing the cup away from him he shook his head.
“I think I’ll pass.”
“What? Can’t handle your alcohol?”
“Exactly. We Vennor have a fast heart rate probably faster than yours, along with a higher body temperature. Mix both of those and some alcohol you have a drunk stumbling idiot in less than a minute.”
“You’re kidding me?” Diagon laughed.
“Not at all, when we’re in the service we’re restricted from having the stuff because it really throws us off. Loss of balance, slurred words you name it. As for myself I’ve never had the stuff before, I had just left the military before I left my home, so really never had a chance too.”
“Hmm…well if that’s the case then I shall have a drink for you.” Downing his own cup with a gasp he reached out taking Anri’s.
“I’ve actually been meaning to ask you about that.”
“What about it?”
“Well how did you manage to get off your planet and why did you decide to leave?”
“Well if you must know….” He paused trying to remember the whole ordeal as it had played out.
“I was discharge from the military.”
“Well I would imagine at some point-“
“Dishonorable discharge.”
“Ah….”
“Ya, so discharged with dishonors. Someone like me then had no place in society, outcast to say the least. The choice at that point were become a master thief....” He laughed.
“Commit suicide or leave. I’m no crowd so I left, kind of have to have balls to break into a military base and steal a space ship, so in a way I guess I was a thief.”
“You stole a rocket guarded by your military, impressive…. So why did you get discharged?”
“That…that is a story for another time.”
Actually he would have told the story to Diagon but during their conversation he had been glancing around the room at the aliens that came and went into bar. Something that he had been taught in the academy was always too be aware of ones surroundings, an idea that never left his side. Even though the cube had been silent through the whole conversation he had also been watching the flow of people and even though it couldn’t tell what had chance its sensor had registered.
“Sir, sensors indicate that stress levels in the room have elated by 90% since we have arrived.”
“If your advance sensor can pick up on that you think I couldn’t?”
“One cannot tell if you wish for us to answer that. One does not want to wind up embedded into another’s skull.”
“Look it can learn.”
“One does have learning software installed.”
“Maybe you should use it now and then, now shut up.”
As if Noah had arrived in the room the sea of people parted as a well looking alien made his way through the bar, his shiny leather boots scraped against the hard floor. Wearing a sleek well pressed shirt and fancy dress pants Anri could tell that he was not one of the usual costumers at the Iron Spicket. The alien had a strange aura around him one that could strike fear into a man just by looking him in the eyes, and his armed guards that walked behind him also helped to to enforce his level of fear. All of those thing would scare an average citizen but Anri was not average nor was he a citizen of Alpha prime, though Diagon seemed to be shifting in his seat as beads of sweat appeared on his brow.
“So who’s this guy?”
“No one that you should get involved with I can tell you that much.”
“Well doesn’t look like I’m going to have much of a choice in that, he's coming right this way."
As he spoke the man arrived at their table with an over whelming sense of confidence in his walk, already Anri could tell he didn’t much care for the alien, anyone with that much over confidence was either stupid or an ass. Either option in this case was a bad one, as he stood over their table as if he was awaiting for one of them to answer his presence. As much as he wanted to ignore the alien he rather felt uncomfortable having someone looming over him as he tried to enjoy his conversation with Diagon. Glancing past the man he could see that his men where quickly flooding the rest of the people out of the bar, even Mika seemed to bet getting caught up in the swarm.
“So…can I help-“
“Why yes, yes you can. My people informed me not long ago of a new arrive to the station who caused quite a commotion with a few of the locals. Saying that the alien knocked their heads around, and that a few of them might even have been killed. Now I didn’t believe it until I saw the fight with my own eyes, this city has eyes everywhere if you know where to find them.”
“Great, so what do you need from me then?”
“From you? I would like to give you an great opportunity here on the station, seeing as you’re new here and are not at work right now I can assume you do not have a job.”
“Assuming you are right, are you offering me a job?”
“I always assume I'm correct. Seeing how well you handled those men out there you seem quite capable of yourself as a fighter. I need a man working for me that’s not afraid to get down in dirty in his work, willing to do what it take to complete the jobs I offer.”
“Might be something I could handle.”
“I would rather hope so.”
“Now Anri are you sure you want to-“
“Hush old man, this conversation is between me and Anri here, you just have the pleasure of listening too it. Mind yourself and guzzle down that swill you call a beverage.” His harsh words ripping into Diagon, with little else to do he sunk back into this chair nursing his drink.
“Now, where was I?”
“You were offering me a job before you yelled at my friend.” He said as steam rose from his back.
“Right, I have come here to you with his offer, for three main reasons. First off you are a strong capable person who would do well here on Prime, giving the right direction you could have a happy long life here. Secondly, you could also pose as someone that could get in my way if not guided correctly and thusly I would have to have you terminated. And lastly, there are many armed enforcement agents waiting on my word to have you deported because of failure to comply with Alpha prime regulations.” The man said with a cold eyes that could freeze a sun, grinning all the while.
Though Anri thought he could probably take the man on himself, snapping his neck would wind up with a truck load of arm guards storming the building. There was a large chance he could take them on but the fight would mostly likely leave him in a weakened state, even if he managed to get away he was stuck on a station with no way to get off and nowhere to go. Calming himself down the steam began to fade away, as much as he wanted to smash his face in he decided that he couldn’t. Getting away was one thing but surviving was another, not to mention others might get hurt or worse in the cross fire between the two.
“Alright then… I'll work for you.”
“You sir have made a great choice today, I wasn’t really looking forward to having to pay off the damages to this place.” Reaching into his shirt he pulled out a small piece of paper and placed it on the table before him, spread cross it was an alien language that Anri could not read.
“Come to this address tomorrow and be ready to work like you never have before.”
Turning on his heels he headed back towards the door where his armed guards where standing waiting for the return of their leader. Reaching the metal framed door way he turned around to glace at the two of them one last time.
“Oh and one last thing they’re aren’t any law enforcement out here, so feel free to leave whenever you feel.” He said with a toothy grin.
Before Anri could stand up in protest the man had vanished from the bar, back out into the docking bay. Sitting back down in the plush chair the benched wobbled in ward as he swore he heard something snap.
“Neus Iechi, crime lord of the lower city.”
“Great guy…and too think I’m working for him now.”
“As much as I wish to protest you no longer have to worry about finding a job.”
“Yippee.” He threw his hands up sarcastically then slammed his head into the table splitting it into two pieces.
“…I’d say I would pay for it but I don’t have any cash.”
“No but you do have a job.”
“Thanks for reminding me.”
"One has records of you making an meeting with the female out front once you had 'income'.
"I hate you so much."
