Slowly aliens began to fill back into the bar, only a few at first but after testing the waters others seemed fit that it was safe once again for their company. Each one of the passing aliens gave both of them strange looks as they passed by retuning too their drinks, it could have been the smashed table that was half way on the floor or the fact they had been the only ones to remain inside. The stares were not one of fear like they had been outside but one of awe, it was not often one would see Neus up close like that and be alive to tell the tale of the encounter. Sitting up from his bent position he looked back at Diagon sighing as a small puff of steam expelled from his mouth.
“Oh my, are you two are alright?” The all too familiar voice of Mika yelled out as she raced through the crowd.
Glancing back across the bar he saw Mika as she managed to squeeze in between the aliens as they returned back to their drinks and talk, no doubt Anri knew what they were talking about. Almost as if she was made of elastic she passed between the drunks in a matter of no time appear just next to their once non-broken table. She held her hand up for a second as she recovered her breath, guessing from her breathing rate she probably had run all the way back to the bar.
“Are you two alright? Neus didn’t hurt you did he?”
“No we are quiet alright, nothing hurt but my pride and my leg.” He gave out a weak laugh, Anri could still tell he was shaken up from the experience.
“But the table- he did this didn’t he! I’m gonna make him pay out that ass for-“
“Actually that was me…sorry about that.” He rubbed the back of his head.
“Oh…well that ok then, I’m just glad you two are ok.”
“Just a second ago you wanted to rip Neus a new-“
“It’s ARIGHT.” Mika said with fire in her voice.
Anri was not one to argue with a woman especially if they could fill with anger just as quickly as she did. Nodding his head he turned his attention back to the card that had been placed on the table, now resting on the floor he bent over to pick it up. While he was down there he also picked up the cube who until now he had forgotten it had been sitting on the table when he cracked it.
“Enjoy the ride?”
“If one could call that a ‘ride’.
Placing the card up to the light he examined the funny letters that lined against its surface, each one looked crazier than the last. Sighing he gave up on trying to decipher the word, passing towards Diagon he thought he would let the alien that had live in space for many years give it a try.
“Oh don’t look at me, I can’t read that moon speak.” Diagon laughed drinking from his flagon.
“What? How can you not read this? How long have you been here?”
“Oh… about 40 years.”
“And you haven’t learned how to read this?”
“Never really had a reason too, use technology to help guide me. Just like that translator that is barely hanging onto your head there are other devices that can help one read.”
“Just seems, I don’t know kind of lazy.”
“True but given that there are over 50 languages used here on Alpha prime, not to mention all the other languages in the galaxy it would take a person years to even begin to have a basic understanding of their written script.”
“Well when you put it like that….”
“I can read it!” Mika jumped at the option of being helpful.
“You have one of those readers?”
“Hehe no, unlike Diagon over here I actually can write and read in many of the languages found here on the station.” Laughing she poked Diagon on the shoulder.
“Thought that would take years.”
“Well I’m not a day over twenty if I remember correctly.” She wicked at Anri.
“Let me see the card sweet heart.” She reached over too Diagon taking the card away from him.
Giving the card a quick glance over, she flipped it over checking the back for anything that might be useful. Clearing her throat she read the card off for the two.
“Factory district, building 1010. Arrive at noon, come alone. Congratulation on finding a translator.”
“So what was this? Like a test?”
“It would appear that way.”
“It seems like every time I think I can’t hate this guy anymore he does something new to piss me the off.”
“Hehe, that’s Neus for you, always getting under peoples skins.”
“Yes he does, he’s made quite an enemy of himself too many people here on Alpha, but he stays away from the higher levels. He may be arrogant, selfish, cold hearted-ass but he knows the trade of the game and his place.”
“Arrogant and selfishness does not make a for a wise person, even if he doesn’t step on the wrong person’s toes eventually he’s going to get a knife in his back.”
“It hasn’t happened yet, unfortunately.” Diagon said with a scowl drinking from the cup.
“Great so what do we do now? Still have a quiet a bit of time till tomorrow.”
“20 hours 12 minutes and 33 seconds sir.”
“What…is take little thing talking?”
“The real trick is getting him to shut up.”
“What is it?”
“Long story one that I don’t really feel like talking about right now. Sorry.” He held his palms face up.
“Aw, well that’s ok. Well how about this, since you don’t have a place to stay and Diagon is probably going to offer to let you say with him, but I know he doesn’t have a spare bed-”
“My, my I’m I that much of a softy? Obviously this station hasn’t hardened me too much over the years.” He chuckled.
“But that’s what make you such a good person.” She laughed.
“Anyway why don’t you take one of the rooms up stairs? Anything to help a friend of Diagon’s.” She smiled at Anri.
“Oh I couldn’t do that, even though I have a job I still don’t have anyway to pay you back.”
“That’s fine huh, you already took care of those thugs outside. They always came in here and made a mess of the place, I figure I owe you one.”
“So you heard about that huh?”
“All everyone was talking about, that was until Neus came in here making such a scene.”
“Turning into mister popular aren’t I?”
“One would need people to actually enjoy being in your company.”
“Is there a mute button on you?” Anri picked up the cube looking it over.
“Due to safety precautions said button has been disabled.”
“Aw! The little thing is adorable.”
“Don’t get close to this one, you’ll regret it. I know I do.” He sighed placing the cube onto the seat next to him.
“Anyway go upstairs whenever you’re ready, last door on the left. I gotta get back to work before those drunks start sobering up.”
Winking she gave him a key, turning back into the sea of people he could have sworn she had just shook her ass at him.
“Well that was…interesting.” Anri turned his attention back too Diagon.
“That’s one way to put it.” Diagon laughed choking on his drink.
“Was it just me or was she-“
“Coming on too you?”
“Well I was going to say hitting on me but ya pretty much.”
“Ha well that how Mika is, so just loves the new guys. Strange, exotic, naive new comers.”
“Lucky me…. Well at least I got a free bed for a night.”
“Ha just make sure it’s not hers.”
“Not that he would know what to do with her.”
“I think a certain robot wants to be smashed into someone elses skull today.”
“As much as you hate that thing you sure get along well together.”
“What the hell are you taking about? I already flung this damn thing through the air once, might end up doing it again if this keeps at it.”
“It’s what friends do, don’t you think Zefk and I haven’t gotten into a fight before?”
“Surprised you could even get into a fight considered I’ve never seen him say more than a few words.”
“He doesn’t talk much because it’s difficult for him too. Stroke a few years back caused to him lose a lot of his muscle control in his mouth, the surgery helped but he rather not talk unless the situation is dire enough.”
“Man, you guys have gone through some shit.”
“Ravages of age, nothing last forever.”
“You can say that again….”
Now that things had settled down compared too before the two began to talk again, nothing too in-depth but just simple conversation. He could still get the feeling that people kept throwing glances his way but he shrugged them off, they would just have to get used to the idea of him bringing there.
“Since it doesn’t seem like your going to be doing much today how about we finally get some drinks into you?”
“Oh I don’t think-“
“Come on, you have to live a little in your life.”
“I think crash landing on a deserted planet and winding up on a foreign space station is enough of living for me.”
“Oh come on, you’re not gonna let an old man drink by himself, it’s on me.”
“…alright, just one ok? I don’t want to lose too much of my motor functions.”
A few drinks later….
“Whoooo! Shots, shots, shots!” Anri yelled out.
Taking the small shot glass in his hand he poured the yellow liquid down his throat even with his high tolerance to pain he still crenched at the burning drink. Gasping he place the glass onto the cubes top, along with a few other glass that had began to stack up.
"One was not designed to be used as a table."
"Extra added features, love technology mutil-purpose tool it is." He laughed slamming his hand against the chair.
“Ah, I don’t think you need anymore, in fact I don’t think I need anymore.” Diagon managed to mumbled out, setting in shot glass on the seat.
True to his word it hadn’t taking long before the alcohol hand set into his head causing his mind to start spinning within minutes of his consuming the substance. Topped with fact that he had never consumed alcohol before, and taking in a lot of it the effects had showed quiet fast. The feeling was something that he had never experienced before but whatever it was he liked it given by his lack of care and shouting. Sliding out of the booth Diagon place the cane before him standing next to the table with a slight groan.
“Well with that note I think I shall take my leave for the evening, too much of the good stuff has made me felling a tad tired. As much as I wish I could carry on drinking with you I have a full day tomorrow.”
“Ah… damn, well it was fun. Don’t think I’ve ever had this much fun before.” He laughed.
“Well remember too much of a good thing can be bad, take it easy old chap.” Diagon patted Anri on the shoulder, turning around he hobbled back towards the door.
“Ya you too….” He groaned, obliviously the alcohol in his system was rather too much for the young Vennor.
Standing up slowly his head began to swirl the room almost seemed like a whirl pool he was caught in. Placing his hand on the nearby wall he steadied himself, eventually his head stopped spinning as he got used to the feeling. Taking a deep breath he walked towards the stair case checking each foot step to make sure he had proper footing, it was a slow walk as every few feet he tripped over his own feet. Not sure quite how he did it but he made his way up the steps and up to the door of the room, having some difficulty with the key he eventually slid the key into the lock. Opening the door he paid little attention to the small room other than the bed, even though he was in a completely different society he was glad to see that even they had beds. Taking a few steps forward he collapsed on the bed with a rather large thud, the legs of the bed creaking with his large mass. As soon as his head met with the pillow he passed out on the frilly sheets.
He wasn’t sure how long he had been out but as he started to come to he noticed that something was defiantly different, it was quite. No longer could he hear the drunken antics of the people below, but instead the dull roar of the occasional ship passing by. Still lying flat on his face he roll over onto his back, even though his eyes were still shut he could feel his brain swirl around in his head. The large amounts of alcohol were still in his body, he guessed he hadn’t been asleep for more than a few hours at best maybe six or so. Slowly he opened his eyes to the dark room around him, he couldn’t remember shutting the lights off when he came in but then again he didn’t remember how he got up here in the first place.
“One see’s your awake.”
“Oh shit, where are you?” He jumped slightly in the bed, as the legs squeaked once again.
“Too your right sir.”
Picking his head up slightly he looked over to his right were the cube was sitting upon a wooden cabinet, it’s black eye now a dim shade of red.
“Well hey there…how long have I been- you know never mind.”
“By measurement of time slept and the sluggishness of your words one can perceive that you are still drunk.”
“Gee couldn't figure that out on my own.”
"You were unaware, its why we told you.”
“Oh can it…where am I?”
“I was brought up here by the female Mika, after you left me at the table.”
“Ah, I did leave you didn’t I? Ha, sorry, drunk, you know kind of a drunk’s thing to forget things.”
“We were almost taking by those creatures down stairs.”
“Would have saved me a lot of aspirin if they had.”
“Snappy come back not found, shutting down.” The dim glow died from the cube and once again the room was completely dark.
“I think…in my drunken state…I out witted the computer… I really need to drink more.” He laughed, choking on his own spit.
Hearing a small tap on the door he picked his head up from the pillow as he stared at the door, he couldn't imagine who would be coming to his door.
“Uh…come in?”
As the door opened the dim light from the hallway lit up the room as the door creaked with each inch it moved, walking in Anri could make out the person to be Mika.
“Oh hey there Mika.” He gave a small laugh.
“Hello there sweet heart.” Stepping into the room she closed the door behind her quietly. As if on command a lamp in the corner of the room came to life, giving off a dim glow in the room.
“So what do I owe the honor?”
“Oh stop.” She laughed.
“I thought you might be hungry after all you drink so I brought you some food, we have a kitchen down stairs so I thought I might whip something up for you.”
“Ah well that was nice of you, what do we have here?”
“Oh noting special just some bread and stew.” Sitting up she handed him the tray with a loaf of bread and a bowl of shimmering stew on it.
“Sweet.” As soon as the plate had landed in his lap he began to dig into the food, he hadn’t thought about it but the last thing he ate was those stringy plants back on the planet he had crash landed on. The stew was salty and hot to the touch, but he didn’t mind he was used to eating hot things. Tearing into the bread he looked up to notice that she was watching him devour the food, with the hunger embedded into his brain he had almost forget his table manners.
“Oh sorry about that, it’s been awhile since I’ve had anything to eat.” Slowing down he continued to much on the food.
“It’s fine I bet you’ve have a long journey, can’t imagine you’ve had a good meal in a few days.” She giggled.
“More like 5 years.” He laughed.
“Wow I’m surprised that your still alive. I don’t think I go that long without eating anything.”
“No, no, I was frozen for five years. Technically I was alive but I wasn’t aware of anything going on around me, couldn’t move.”
“Oh well that’s a different story, I don’t think I’ve met anyone that has been froze before, your full of interesting stories aren’t you?”
“Well I don’t know if I would say that….” Anri grinned, he had never thought of himself as interesting until he had left his world, he was starting to like the new found attention.
“Think you could tell me one?” She asked him as she giving him the puppy eyes.
“Er.. alright I guess….” Setting the spoon down he began to rack his mind for a story to tell her, it was something he didn’t do very often, so it made picking out one difficult for him.
“Ok, well back in my days at the academy we used to do things called orbit drops. Pretty much what we would do is we would take the drop ships out for a joy ride, go out see the city whatever we wanted. We’d usually get in trouble but it was worth the punishment, things were pretty strict so we had to find a way to relax out there. One day one of my squad mates fell from the ship at this point we were probably a good three thousand feet up, when he hit the ground we thought he was dead but he wasn’t. Turns out the armor we have is so strong that it with stood the impact of the fall, he was a little shaken up but he was alive. That’s when I got the idea to see who could go the highest and survive, everyone thought I was crazy but I wagered them a months worth of pay that I would jump out higher than the rest of them. Last one too jump from the ship won the cash, everyone that wanted in on it had to place their bet too. Anyway push came to shove and I jumped out of the ship last, at this point I could see the rim of the planet. Gravity pulled at me and I went crashing back down, wind ripping at my body it was crazy. Hit the ground like a bomb kicking up dirt and rocks in every direction, woke up a few minutes later with a slight concussion and a whole lot richer.” He laughed rubbing his head.
“Wow, that’s insane.” She gasped he eyes fill of awe.
“Ya the worst part was that the commander saw the whole thing, so the whole squad ending up having to scrub the latrines for the next week. The best part about the story was that the commander actually starting using that as a form of training, show how it made our armor stronger, never got credit for it but I did have a fun time.” He laughed resting his hand behind his head thinking back to the day.
“Aw I’m sorry to hear that, sounds like it was fun though, don’t think I would fair as well as you did though.”
“Probably not but then again you aren’t heavily plated like am.” He tapped his chest.
“Umm…would you mind if I touch it?”
“Um…my plates? I guess not, I mean I won’t really feel anything other than the pressure so go ahead." He was unsure of the idea of it, but she had brought him free food, he guessed he owed her another one.
Sitting down on the bed she leaned forward placing her tiny hand onto his chest, rubbing her finger tips over the smooth plate that covered his chest.
“You can’t feel anything?”
“Well not on my plates, damn things are so thick there are no nerves inside of them. I could get hit by a train and there wouldn’t be a scratch on me. Trust me I’ve tried. If I remember correctly I broke the train, boy were they pissed about that one.”
“So you can’t feel at all?”
“I can just not through my plates, hands, neck, eyes, feet places like that, just not were I’m covered.”
“I see.” Reaching up she gently ran her hand across his gills, the action caused him to shiver slightly.
“I think that’s enough of that, gills are a tad sensitive to touch.”
“Really now?” She said with a devilish hint in her voice, almost as quickly as he had said it he regretted it as she began to tickle his neck.
Laughing he squirmed around on the bed trying to get away from her, but the alcohol in his body made if feel like his arms and legs were made of stone. Struggling he eventually found that she was sitting onto top of him now, even though his mind was unfocused he began to snap back to reality.
“Er…maybe you should get off….”
“I dunno I kind like it up here, you’re really warm you know that?” She said with a twinkle in her eye.
“Not feeling to comfortable right now….” He managed to cough out as his heart rate began to climb.
“Come on we were having fun before.” She leaned forward her face a few inches away from his.
“Ya but this is totally different than before.”
“You’re going to hurt my little feeling, you know that? I thought I big strong warrior like yourself wouldn’t be afraid of a tiny thing like me.” She whimpered.
“It’s not like that…just that….”
“He is a virgin.” The computerized voice called out from the corner.
“Dammit stay out of this!”
“Aw how cute.” She giggled.
“It’s alright I was just messing with you anyway.” She poked his nose.
“I- I-…what.”
“I was just playing with you silly, I wouldn’t do something like that to you. We’ve only just met, I just wanted to see how far you would let me go before you’d tell me too stop.”
“She played you like a instrument.”
“What did I say?”
Laughing Mika hopped down from Anri’s chest she took the tray that had fallen on to the floor and placed it on the cabinet next to the cube.
“Sorry about that.” She giggled.
“Ya sure….” He said embarrassed, as a small stack of steam blew from his mouth.
“But,that is my bed.”
“Oh sorry Ill get up.”
“No it’s fine I didn’t have any other beds when I offered and I would have felt bad it you had to sleep on Diagon dirty floor. Better to have a bed and share it than sleep on a nasty floor.”
“I suppose....”
“Now scoot over some.” She giggled giving him a slight push, even with all of her strength it would have been impossible for her to even move him a inch. Sliding over in the bed he made room for her, the bed wasn’t very large but it was able to hold both of them as she lay down next too him.
“Sorry if you’re not feeling comfortable being this close but tomorrow I should have a room open if you want.”
“Probably for the best….”
Clapping her hands the lights in the room went out, only replaced by the dim red light of the cube’s eye. Laying on his side he looked at the window that led to the outside of the bar, he could make out a few stars through the gap. As he gazed at the star he thought that one of them might be Riva, but from out here in deep space they all looked the same too him. Scooting back into him Mika took a hold of Anri’s arm and placed it across her body with a small sigh of relief.
“Hmm…you’re like a heat blanket….” Her last words as she dozed off.
“Enjoy your sleep sir…not that you’ll be getting much of it.”
Anri could of swore he heard smug laughter in the cubes voice, as much as he wanted to call him out on it he didn’t want to wake Mika up. Laying there he looked out at the stars, he lost track of time as eventually sleep took over his mind.
