His sleep was peaceful that night, which was a first since he had first left Riva all those years ago. No bad dreams, not any dreams at all, just pure restful sleep. Slowly the city began to come alive once again as lights in the homes began to light up one by one illumining the still dim streets. Throwing off their warm sheets they crawled out of their cozy beds and started their day, even though they always longed for more of the addictive slumber their lively hoods beckon to be worked. Store doors opened as they prepared for another long day, items stocked and shelves cleaned the cities cogs woke the sleeping giant. Taking notice of their waking citizen the cities lights grew brighter letting the station shine throughout the system. Revving their engines the thrusters of the ships roared to life, their exhaust throwing black smoke into the air. Speeding down the docks each one took off from the station to make their delivers of goods too far off worlds, picking up raw materials to be processed in the factory district of the cold metal station.
The small distant roars of the city began to add together shaking the air with their vibrations, the subtle sounds where enough to wake Anri up from his sleep state. Eyes cracking open a beam of light shot through the still open curtain brighten the dim room, head pounding with pain he stuck his light sensitive eyes once again letting his body relax. The alcohol had certainly done its job as he had been told of before, his head hurt his stomach felt as though it was going to turn inside out; he was surprised that the food he had eaten last night had even stayed with him throughout the night, at least he hoped it did. Memories of last night flashed into his head but it wasn’t a clear picture too him, just parts of the night could come too him. He remember drinking with Diagon, and eating the food but the rest of the night was still a fuzz to him.
Moving around in the bed he moved his arm down to get more comfortable when he felt his arm touch something cool too his warm hands. The object was smooth of the touch as he ran his hand down it trying to figure just what the object was. It was scaly and smooth no matter which direction he seemed to rub against it, not able to figure out what it was he opened his eyes to investigate. Opening his eyes halfway the light shown into his face, struggling against the shine he looked down in front of him as to see what it was that he was touching. Seeing the young woman laying next to him his eyes shot wide open in disbelief, his heart rate kicking up a few notches in his chest.
“Fuck…what happened last night.”
Hearing his voice Mika moved around in the sheets her slender body rubbing against his plates, stretching her arm out from the covers she gave out a high pitched yawn. Rubbing her eyes with her scaly hands she slowly opened them and looked around the room. Feeling the hand on her thigh she giggled and rolled over too face Anri, with a smirk across her face.
“Well good morning sweet heart.” She giggled laying her face against his warm chest plate, her purple eyes seemed to glow in the dim lighten of the room.
“Oh please don’t tell me, we-“
“Oh all night, I didn’t think you would ever stop.” She giggle running her hand up his arm.
“Ah…fuck…I’m so sorry I was really, I mean really drunk.”
“Hehe, I’m just kidding you. You’re so easy you know that?” She laughed giving him a small push with her hand.
“…your enjoying my suffering aren’t you?”
“Ohhh just a little bit.” She grinned at him.
“You should have been a part of the torture division back on Riva, you would have fit right in.” He sighed, leaning back into the soft mattress.
“Maybe, but I can’t imagine that it would be nearly as fun as messing with you.” She laughed rolling her arm over his chest.
“So what’s the plan for today?” He sighed.
“Well I need to go get the bar ready, pick up the delivery, stock the shelves, prep the food, and clean. And you have a job. First day on the job are you excited?”
“I wouldn’t put it quite like that, I’m not looking forward to having to work under that jerk but a job is a job, it’s that or get launched to another planet.”
“I guess there not much of a choice in that is there?”
“I guess not.” He laughed, his heart rate dropping back to normal.
“Hmm…I don’t want to get up. Even though your plates are very hard, you’re really cozy not to mention warm.” She giggled leaning against his chest.
“Thank you?” He laughed.
Sitting up in the bed she stretch her back yawning once again, one arm behind her head with her other stretched behide her head she looked back at Anri over her shoulder.
“Come on let’s get something to eat, gotta fill your tummy before you throw up all that you drank. Something hot and greasy will do you the trick.”
“Sounds good to me.” He smiled back at her.
“Just let me shower first.” She winked.
Standing up she went to the cabinet searching its contents until she picked out a new pair of clothes. Seeing the cube was watching her she bent over giving it a small kiss on its black eye, then went to the door. Turning the knob she looked back over at Anri who was still sitting in the bed.
“Unless you want to join me?” She giggled.
“Um- what- er. Are you playing with me again?”
“Oh you know me so well already.” Winking she went out the door laughing.
“Well then….” Steam came from the back of his head.
“Enjoy your sleep?”
“Actually ya I did, haven’t slept that long in years.”
“One would think it would have been hard to sleep next to her with all the hormones both of you were putting out.”
“Is there anything your sensors can’t do?”
“…love.”
“Wow… that-that was a much deeper answer than I was expecting form you.”
“We shocked us both.”
The robot actually made him laugh for once, even when he might have laughed his jokes before they were scarcest in nature. Laying back down in the bed he closed his eyes again letting the warmth of the sheets envelope his body, he didn’t want to get up just yet.
He fell into another sleep again but it wasn’t nearly as long as before, it was long enough to get some extra rest but not long enough to dream. A sudden weight on his chest woke him from his sleep again, shooting his eyes open he saw that Mika was sitting on him. Her hair was in wet clumps as small drops of water fell from her face, he could smell the warm scent of fruit coming from her body.
“Hello again sleepy head, were you waiting for me.”
“Sorry hangover kind of made me pass out again.”
“Likely story mister.” She poked his face.
“How was the shower?”
“Hot and full of steam, just like you are.” She laughed with a devilish mannerism in her voice.
“Full of it.” He laughed shooting as a ring of steam shot out from his mouth, breaking apart when it hit her face.
"Well let's get some thing to eat...or we could always do something a bit more fun." She had that devilish look in her eyes again.
"Er- I-" Anri tired to find the words but nothing could come to his mouth.
"Hehe, your so cute when your nervous." She poked his chin.
“Come on them steamy, let’s get you filled up.” She jumped down from his chest with grace landing on the hard floor.
Tossing of the sheets he place his feet onto the cold floor, the sudden coolness sent a shiver through his body. He much rather preferred the warm bed to the suddenly cold flooring, taking the cube with him he followed Mika down stairs to the bar.
The air was full of spices as they wafted through the air of the bar, the sounds of the sizzling frying pan back in the kitchen slowly died as it had long be removed from the orange flames that had licked at the metal siding. Cutting boards and knives lay around the small kitchen as the food was being prepared for the opening of the bar, their shiny blades reflecting the dim lighting of the room. Out in the main room the sounds of voice could be heard penetrating through the metal walls, having joined them a tad later on Diagon sat at the bar along with Anri and Mika, all three of them munching down on their breakfast.
“My Mika it seems like every time I think your food can’t get any better you prove me wrong once again.” Diagon shoved a fork full of food into his mouth.
“Ya I have no idea what the hell this is but damn if it isn’t fucking delicious.” Anri gobbled down the meal.
“Oh you guys.” She covered her mouth with one hand laughing.
“So Anri are you ready for today?”
Leaning back in the stool he looked towards the ceiling with a sigh, a small puff of steam emerging from his mouth.
“Ready as I’ll never be, as much as I don’t want to work for the guy I can’t imagine that the pay is going to suck. He may be a total ass hat, but the guy has a lot of influence around here.”
“Just be careful around him, never know what he’s going to ask you to do.”
“Ya, ya…” He groaned.
“Well then.” Daigon hopped down from the tall stool, cane landing first the landing was actually well done given his bum leg.
“The ship is all fixed, I can give you a lift to the place, but getting back is something you’ll have to do on your own.”
“Thanks for the lift, I’ll get a better idea of the lay out of the city this way.”
“Thank you for the breakfast Mika as always it was fantastic.”
“You’re so sweet Diagon.”
Standing up from the stool he made his way over to Diagon before he heard Mika clearing her throat from behind him. Turning back around his eye brow rose in question.
“What?” He said confused.
“I don’t get a goodbye, or even ‘Thanks for the free meal’?” She held her hands on her hips.
“Oh right…sorry…umm thanks for the meal, it was great I owe you one.” He gave a weak laugh.
“Damn straight.” She winked sticking her tongue out at Anri.
“Be safe, and here's a little something for good luck.” Leaning over the corner she pressed her lips against his plated face, giving him a quick kiss on his face. Though Vennor cannot blush there core temperature do get highly elevated, as proof of the steam cloud rising from his head.
“Um- what-um….”
With Daigon laughing he hobbled out the door into the docking bay, leaving Anri standing there stuttering with steam shooting out of his head.
“One believes he might over heat, recommend stand ten feet away for maximum safe distance.”
“Oh relax, it was just a little kiss.” She laughed, taking the cube from his hands she placed it on the counter.
“Now get on out of here I’ll watch over your little friend here while you’re out on the job.”
“Uh-ya thanks.” He mumbled turning on his heels he sped out through the wooden door.
Turning the cube around to face her Mika had that devilish look in her eyes once again, reaching down under the counter she picked up a small black box and placed it next to the cube. Opening it she pulled out a black box and a pair of scissors.
“Now how about we have a little fun and make you look pretty?”
“Error one does not have functions for this application, errorrrrrrrrrrr.”
Back outside Anri leaned against the siding of the building trying to cold down as steam poured off him like dry ice in water. Other than last night which he couldn’t remember most of that was the closets he had been to a female before, the experience had been too much for the young Vennor. Slamming his head back against the wall he looked over at Diagon who stood a few away leaning his back on the old junker he flew.
“Are you going to be ok, or should be call in work and tell them you’re feeling ill?”
Giving him a weak grin Anri shook his head, he was going to be fine as soon as he heart calmed down. Backing off from the wall he strode over to the ship, letting Diagon head inside before stepping inside himself. Sitting down he looked around the cabin, it seemed a lot larger with just the two of them inside. Kicking the ship to life it shook for a few second before it took off from the ground, zooming down the docking bay it took off into the air. Staring out the window as they went he tried to familiarize himself with the new city, this high up and going as fast as they were it mostly looked like a blur to him.
“So where is Zefk at? Haven’t seen they guy since the port.”
“He’s still resting back at home, even longer day for him than for either of us. Didn’t get to sleep until about 6, thought I’d let him rest a bit more before we head off to another world.”
“Where are you guys heading off too?”
“Oh it’s a small terrestrial world about a few light years away, our scans suggest that it has a decent level of Helium, though not very expensive we could get a large amount and sell it for a quick buck. We won’t be back till late tomorrow if all goes well.”
“Ah so I guess no drinks tonight?” Anri grinned.
“No I’m afraid not tonight, maybe tomorrow after you get paid. Then the drinks can be on you.”
“I don’t think I want to drink again for a long time, that stuff fucked me up.”
“Actually that’s something I wanted to talk about.”
“What? My drinking? Look I’m sorry if I said anything that offended you last night, I don’t really remember much of it-“
“No it’s not that, it’s Mika. You two didn’t do any-“
“Oh no, nooo, no, no….no.”
“I won’t be mad at you if you did I was just-‘
“Look she came on to me, but I told her no. She said she was just kidding about the whole thing.”
“That sounds like her.”
“I mean all we did was share the same bed.”
“I-…hrmm….”
“But nothing else, I swear.”
“I believe you. It just that Mika is a dear friend of mine, I’ve known her for years and I look out for her. I never had children and I sort of see her in that way, just whatever you do…don’t break her heart. I don’t think she could go through that again.”
Landing the vehicle it came to a halt just outside the building, whose numbers matched the one on the card. Hitting a button on the dash board the back door opened to left Anri out, climbing through the cabin he jumped out of the ship landing on his feet. Turning back around he looked back inside the ship to thank Diagon for the lift but before he could Diagon spoke before him.
“Just think about what I’ve said, aright?”
Closing his mouth he nodded his head, sometimes it was best to say nothing and just listen to others. With door shutting close Anri waved goodbye as the ship took off back the way it had come, within a few seconds it had turned the corner and disappeared.
“Well that was awkward.”
Shaking his head he refocused on the job ahead, there was a time and a place for everything and now it was time to work. He had plenty of time to think of what Diagon had said later, he had no idea what Neus was going to toss at him so he had to be ready. Turning back around he faced the worn metal building rather than a place of business it looked like a place he would get tetanus, the metal fences the surrounded the facility looked like those that had come with the building. Large holes in the wiring looked as though they had been broken through many times in the past, and no one had bothered to fix them. Looking the building up and down he spotted an old fan at the head of the building, slowly it rotated its rusted blades looked to be barely hanging together.
Trying to walk through one of the holes in the gate he soon came to realize that he was rather too large to fit through it, rather than walk through the fence he brought it down by just walking forward. Breaking the bolts that held the structure together it sprung forward like a rubber band falling towards the ground. Shrugging his shoulder he picked his foot up and kicked the metal fence away from him, even with such a gentle kick the worn structure seem to explode into thousands of pieces flying all over the place. He wasn’t sure if it was because the gravity was so low here on the station or if he was just getting stronger but the fence fell apart much easier than he had expected it too.
Reaching a large rusted door rather than even attempt to knock he pushed the door open, it gave in rather easy given that it wasn’t even locked. The bolts screeched against the hinges as the door swung open, letting off a howling sound as the life seemed to be draining from the door. While the building looked rather dead on the outside the insides where crawling with life, aliens of all different types were busy packing boxes and loading them into trucks. Without a doubt he knew that whatever they were loading into the trucks were illegal but he cared little about it, this place wasn’t his home and he knew little about what went on around here.
“Ah yes there you are Anri, come, come I’ve been except you!” Neus voice called from across the packing lanes.
He could see the man still sharply dressed with the same two body guards trailing his every movement. Stepping away from the doors they seemed to have a mind of themselves as the shut and locked themselves behind him. Taking a few steps forward he looked around the interior of the building, while it looked like a rusted factory on the outside it was rather modern looking on the inside. Fresh clean metal lined the walls and floors, he could even see a janitor as he wiped the floor, the wet mop running across the smooth surface he walked on. It was defiantly as change from the outsides, Anri had guess it covered up the operations that he was controlling, but he couldn’t imagine anyone would venture into a building like this one their own free will.
Clearing the distance between him and Neus he stood but a few feet away from the man as he inspected the products that flew down the line, now that he was closer he could clearly see that he was shipping weapons. At least that’s what they looked like to the alien, everything he saw around him was foreign in nature but at the same time felt familiar. Seeming satisfied with the product he turned his attention back to Anri.
“I’m glad you showed up, I really wasn’t looking forward to having hire a hit man to take you out.” He laughed at his owe form of a joke.
“Right, look if you hired me too pack boxes I think I’m in the wrong place.”
“Oh no not by a far shot, your talents lie elsewhere. You made that very clearly after you kicked the shit out of those vagrants.”
“So what do you have planned for me?”
“Well as it currently stands I need you to go clear out some ‘competition’ for me. A few days ago another one of my operations were taken over by a competing faction, a few shots here and there and needless to say I lost the damn thing.”
“So what do you want me too do?”
“Same thing that you did too those degenerates.”
“I don’t know… I mean with that it was my fault, it was really only self-defense.”
“Tell me Anri-“ He cleared his throat.
“What did you do on the world you were from?”
“I was stationed in the military.”
“Correct, you’re a natural born warrior this is what you do, only this- this pays much, much better. Once you’re out there on the battle field you’re your own commander. I will not be there to tell you what to do, you do whatever you want however you feel is the best way. Free roam, and once the job is done, you come back to large stacks of money with your name on it. That, sounds like a very good deal to me. You can afford your own place, food, clothes…which you should probably get some.”
“Clothes were only for the elite on-“
“That’s just the thing, work for me and that’s just what you’ll be. The elite of this station, you’ll tower over those that walk the streets, they will come to learn and respect you, what you bring to the table. Money, power, fame, every one of those came become yours. Just do this one job and you’ll find yourself on the right path.”
His words flooded over Anri, he had never been in such a position to obtain such things. Back on Riva everyone shared the wealth, everyone got the same portions of food, pay, everything was simple unless you were one of the elite. Everything they had was great, their power, money even their fame. He had longed to know what if felt like to be in such a place, where he wasn’t just another face in a sea of people, they would know who he was. The choices lay before him, led a happy powerful life, or stay hidden at the bottom never making himself known to the universe.
“…alright….I’ll do it.”
“I knew you would see it my way.” He grinned showing off all of his teeth.
Reaching into his coat pocket he pulled out a wad of cash and tossed it Anri, though he wasn’t expecting such a move he was able to catch the cash rather easily.
“What is this for?”
“Half the pay. Half now, and half when the job is over with.
“What stop me from just taking this a leaving?”
“First off I know you won’t, I saw that look in your eyes you want this more than anything. Secondly, if you did decide to pass up such an opportunity I would have the deportment enforces down on you so fast you wouldn’t even be able to breathe before you were launched off this station. Of course the choice is still in your hands, but I think we both know just what choice you’ll make.”
“… so where is this place at?”
“Head to the opposite side of the factory district, a building with a similar structure to his one with armed guards standing outside. You can’t miss it.” He grinned.
