The walk back was a long one as he traveled down the metal surfaced streets his feet sent vibrations through the ground with each one of his weighted steps. The rust covered structures shinned dimly where the few spots that had not completely turned to iron dust, he was surprised at just how worn the buildings where on the outside. From the two he went inside of though they seemed rather well maintained in their interiors, he wondered if all of them looked that way on the inside. Why bother making them all look that way though, it made it seem that no one had taken the time to prepare them from years of oxidation. The more he stayed on the station the more the things here confused him, sure he was from alien world but even something should stay consistent no matter where one went. Sighing he quicken in pace down the street back towards Nesu’s factory, his mind was buzzing with thoughts of what was really going on, and what Diagon had told him earlier.
He wasn’t sure what he was going to do with Mika, he had never been in such a situation before. Back in the military whenever he had to go eliminate am enemy spy cell everything was straight forward, go in bust some chops, but with this…was a tad more complex situation. It was the first time he had ever been in such a relationship…if one could even call it that much. Though it was forbidden while in the ranks of the military he saw other Vennor hook up all the time, but could the higher ups really not expect a bunch of horny teenagers not to interact in sexual means. Of course any of such relationship were hidden from the public, punishment for such things were terrible for those that broke such laws, and any relationships that were know were quickly exposed. The military did have precautions for such things though giving, with standardized medication they could lower sexual inhibition in all their troops until that was they were discharged from the service. But after 88 years in the service their discharged night was one of drinking and other fun things. Since he had never made it that far he had little experience in such things other than drinking which he had some fun with the other night, other than drugs and sex it was pretty much what he imagined his discharge party would have been like.
Walking through the metal doors of Nesu's building he glanced around trying to find the man who had sent him on the assignment. Nothing much seemed to have change over the few hours he had been out and about killing people for crime lord of the lower city, still the same workers in the same spots as last time. The only thing that had changed were the ships that were being packed to the brim full of weapons Anri couldn’t imagine how someone would need so many guns, then again he didn’t know anything else that went on in the vale. Sitting upon a high end of the factory floor in a chair Nesu viewed over the operation floor with a chilled glass in his hand and a smug look of satisfaction spread across his face. Seeing Anri he waved him over with his gloved hands, that devilish grin that he came to associate with Nesu was shown on his face. With a sigh of annoyance Anri made his way over the lounging man, though he had done the job well he wasn’t looking forward to talking with the man again.
“Ah Anri, glad to see you back so soon, I take it things went as expected.”
“More or less, the walk between was a bitch, but other than that all you’re going to need is a cleanup crew and a few dozen body bags.”
“Ah, so from the looks of your body I take it that your armor was more than enough to stop those bullets.”
“It was like being tickled by machine guns.”
“Good, good. Well if you’re interested I always have more work for you.”
“No…at least not for today. I need a break.” Anri shook his head.
“As to be expected, even a machine needs time to be proper maintained. Very well, here’s the rest of your payment.”
Reaching into his shirt he pulled out another stack of cash and tossed it too him.
Thought Anri had no real concept of the currency that was use on the station if seemed rather like a lot of cash to be just sitting on one’s person. Flipping through the bills he looked at the strange imagines of a person printed on all of them, whoever it was must hold some sort of historical importance. Seeming satisfied he looked back over at Nesu who was sipping on the glass he hand in his hand.
“Yes? I’ve already paid you is there something else you needed?”
“Ya, seeing as you have already been there once do you know how to get to Iron Spicket?”
Few hours later….
Ships zoomed past above the docks as Anri made his way down the metal platform to the Iron Spicket, already he could see the groups of people surrounding its outsides. Even with the crappy condition that the bar was in it seemed rather popular with the locals but he guessed beggars couldn’t be choosers. Given from the looks of the people he passed in the crowd it looked as though they were the bottom rung of this place, lowest of the lowest, he could well relate. Despite that fact they seemed rather happy living here in the crappiest part of the station, where they had come from it must have been one living hell if they enjoyed it here. Walking through the open door of the bar a blast of smoke struck him in the face, today seemed to be a smoking day in the Iron Spicket as it seemed that everyone had some type of burning incense hanging from their mouths. Back on Riva they had similar systems for inhaling drugs of different types however those didn’t smell nearly as bad as the ones that were surrounding him. Coughing slighty he pushed his way past the people making his way up and too the bar, giving some one a little too hard of a push the alien turned around and starting yelling at Anri. After seeing exactly what had pushed him it quickly turned back around its table as if nothing had ever happened, sometimes it paid too look like a brute in armor.
Arriving at the bar she was Mika running back and forth taking down drink orders and dashing back into the kitchen. She looked rather stressed as he could see lines of sweat running down her face, busy night Anri had guessed.
“Mika!” He yelled over the loud inhabitants of the bar, waving his hand at her she turned her head as a smile shot across her face. Dashing over her chest heaved up and down from all the running she had been doing.
“Hey there stranger.” She breathed hard.
“You alright you seem kind of winded.”
“Ya, always happens around this time, just around the time when people want to get wasted and get stuffed full of things they shouldn’t be eaten.” She grinned.
“Anything I can do too help?”
“It’s alright, no offense but you would probably slow me down. Takes a while to learn all the tricks.”
“I’m sorry I would be such a burden on you.” He joked.
“Ha, ha. Silly. Anyway I have to get back to work before these people sober up and go somewhere else to get buzzed.” Turning around she stopped almost immediately and whipped back around to face him.
“Almost forgot!” She palmed her forehead. Pulling out a small silver key she placed it on the counter.
“I got a free room tonight, and I mean just for you this time.” She giggled.
“Oh thanks, so what do I owe you?”
“Oh nothing right now. Go and get some rest. I’ll bring you up some food later when things clam down.” She winked, and once again turned around dashing to fill drink orders.
Heading upstairs he found the key that matched the room number, sliding it into the lock he opened the door and step inside. Though the room was dark it seemed to have a red tinted glow too it, his mind pondered what it could be for a second until he noticed the cube in the corner.
“Umm, cube?”
“Yes sir.”
“What happened to you?”
“Do I look pretty now?”
The cube had gone under quiet a makeover as eye liner and other products covered its outside surface, as if that wasn’t bad enough a red ribbon had been tied around it in a bow.
“What the hell happened too you?” Anri laughed.
“Lady Mika thought we would look better this way, one can judge from your laughter that we have been lied too.”
“That’s one way too put it.” He laughed trying to get his breath back.
“Sensor indicate one is being an ass.”
“Well worth the laughter by a long shot just to be called an ass by a robot.”
Grabbing a towel from on top of cabinet he picked the cube up, wiping the makeup off it, though the towel was now smeared with the products the cube was now cleaned.
“Better?”
“Though one does not have sensor for such readings we have surmised that, yes better.”
“Good didn’t need to hear you bitching for an hour about something else.”
“One does not ‘bitch’.”
“Right and I don’t breath.”
“If only.”
“What?”
“What?”
“Right….”
“What sort of demeaning task did Nesu send you on?”
“Surprisingly enough it wasn’t that bad, just had to take back a factory for him.”
“Take back from who?”
“Beats the hell outta of me, well out of them I guess.”
“You took a job without questioning it? Either you are far more idiotic than we thought or Vennor intelligence has dropped in this generation.”
“Ah shut it, the less questions I ask the more others will be likely to hire me. No questions asked means I work better without having to worry about what I’m doing?”
“Does that no make one more vulnerable to the unknown?”
“Ya I does.”
“One would think that would put you in harms way.”
“Sometimes you have to give something up in your ventures to get what you really want.”
“…and what is it that you really want?”
Before he could open his mouth there was a light tap on the door.
“Come on in Mika.”
Prying the door open Mika tip toed inside the room carrying a grey tray with a steaming plate, and a black cup full of some sort of liquid. Closing the door behind her she gave a small sigh placing the tray on the cabinet.
“That was rather faster than I thought.”
“Oh I’m sorry I couldn’t get here any faster, I’m a bad maid.” She winked.
“Things have calmed down a bit, most of those slobs are drunk by now, probably haven’t even notice that I’ve let, though I can’t imagine that will last forever.”
“Wish I could do something to help, but you made it very clear that I would just muck things up for you.” He chuckled.
Taking a few steps toward him she sat down on the bed, causing the mattress to sink in slightly. Leaning over she placed her head against his plated arm, closing her eyes she sighed again.
“Everything ok?”
“Ya…just tired, all of this work takes a total on a person, not to mention smiling at those jerks takes a lot of energy out of a me.”
“Well why don’t you higher some help?”
“I would if I could but even with all the customers I make just enough to break even every month.”
“How is that possible?”
“Well cost of liquor is expensive because we can’t grow any of it hear on the station. So shipping cost, not to mention taxes really take a toll on my profits.”
“Reason I never got my business license.” He joked giving her arm a playful poked.
“Silly boy.” She laughed.
Sitting back up she stretched her back raising her hands toward the ceiling and yawning.
“Well before I head back down….” She got that devilish look in here eyes again.
“…you may have your own room but think you might want any company tonight?” She leaned over onto his arm.
“…um…well….” Clearing his throat he tried to get his backbone once again, but he felt it was difficult as small puff of smoke shot through his head.
“Not…not tonight…I think I could use some time to myself. A lot too think about and I’m kind of tired.”
“Oh…well that’s alright. I understand, everyone needs some time alone, and I’m sure you had a busy day.” Standing up she made her way back to the door, turning the knob she looked back over her shoulder at him.
“Well good night then.” She whispered back at Anri before walking out of the room.
Sighing he got up from the bed and took the tray with the still steaming food on it, sitting back on the bed he began to dig into the plate, being the only think he had eaten since that moening the food didn’t last long. Finishing the meal he picked up the cup trying to figure out just what the liquid was, as he picked up the cup he noticed a small piece of paper where it had been resting at. Picking up the paper it had written on it was "Looked as though you could use a pick me up" –Mika. Just by reading the note he had a pretty good idea of what the beverage was, putting it too his lips he took a sip of the golden liquid. Burning as it went down it had a smooth after taste that was refreshing to him. Placing the tray next to the bed he leaned back into the mattress resting his back against the wall.
“Hey cube, think you mentioned before that you could connect to the externet here right?”
“One is correct in said statement.”
“Good, think you could figure out how much this could buy me?” Anri said tossing the stack of paper money over to the cabinet.
“Scanning…. Connecting to externet…. Sum of currency…. Said currency could pay for a house of your own.”
“A full fucking house?”
“Indeed sir.”
“Just for that one job? Shit. That’s a lot of cash.”
“Illegal activities would suggest that no taxes are taken from said payment.”
“Why do you think what I was doing was illegal?”
“Given the trace amount of lead on your plating one could surmise that bullets where being fired upon you. Legal activities would have you in no such danger.”
“All of those sensors and yet you can’t be used to hold my drinks.”
“One was not built for such-“
“Ya, ya I know….” He took another sip form the cup, there was a long pause between the two as Anri was getting lost in his thoughts.
“Why did you use the word 'muck'?”
Snapping him from his thoughts he was confused from where the question had come from.
“What? When?”
“Earlier talking to Mika you said “Muck” instead of “Fuck” Which is your preferred use in such situation. One does have vast amounts of RAM and sensors but one cannot figure this one out.”
“I didn’t- did I?” Anri couldn’t remember doing such a time but his head was getting cloudy from the drink that had quickly made it too his mind.
“I dunno…. I guess…. Whenever I swore in front of her before I could see that she would twitch at the word… guess she doesn’t like it…guess I didn’t want to say it in front of here. Strangest thing of all is that I didn’t even notice it…. What do you think?”
“One does not haven’t programs to understand said emotions of living kind.”
“They didn’t give you much in the terms of understanding Vennor…or any kind of living thing did they?”
“Such things were considered unnecessary, emotions of your kind take up memory that could be used for primary functions. Our assignment fell under different terms.”
“What assignment?”
“Access denied.”
“Great…” He drank down the rest of the liquid, placing it on the tray he lay back in the bed and shut his eyes.
Though the alcohol was flowing through his veins already and he was exhausted from all the fighting he had done he couldn’t sleep, his mind was full of thoughts. Where was his life really going? What was Nesu doing? What would his life have been like if he hadn’t left his home? And what was he going to do about Mika? Hours must have past as he lay there, though the walls were well insulated he could hear the distinct sounds of the people as they left the bar one by one over the time he was in the room. Eventually the sounds all faded, the bar was quite again all but the sounds of a lone worker heading up the stairs. Stopping just outside his door he could hear her hesitating at the door to his room, as if deciding whether or not to knock. After a few second he could hear her footsteps head away from the door, as another door opened then closed.
Opening his eyes he looked up at the wooden ceiling tracing the lines in the wood with his eyes, prodding the ideas that ran through his brain. Sighing he swung his legs off the side of the bed letting them scrap against the floor, sitting up he looked around the room. Waking up from his hibernated state its black eyes watched as Anri got out and left the room, with the room now dark its little red eye was the only thing that brightened the room.
A few small taps from the door made Mika jerk up from the bed as she looked around from her slumbered state, rubbing her eyes she kicked the blankets off of her legs. Getting up from the bed she walked over too the door looking through the little glass hole near her eye level.
“Oh!” She quickly snapped out of her dazed state unlocking the door she opened it too see Anri standing there.
“Hey….” His legs wobbled under his weight.
“Are you ok?”
“Ya, even that little cup was enough to kick me to the curb.”
“Aw I’m sorry I didn’t think it was going to be that bad on you.” She whimpered.
“Nah, nah its fine…Um…I was just wondering…I couldn’t sleep, can’t sleep…and is that offer you had before still available?”
“I think there’s more than enough room for the two of us.” She laughed taking his hand and pulling him into the room
“Sorry if I woke you up…its just that…the other night…was the best sleep I’ve ever gotten. I dunno why, but it was…how do I explain it…. I felt….-“
“Happy?”
“Ya that… how did you know?”
“I felt the same way.” She leaned over giving him a hug, such a thing was something that Vennor didn’t do. Out ward signs of affection weren’t something Vennor did, even with their families.
He wasn’t sure what he was going to do with Mika, he had never been in such a situation before.
