Project Maiden
The funding finally came through from the heads of UNITY I couldn’t believe it, the details are scarce at this point, hell...development hasn’t even begun yet. They tell us so little whenever we work on something, it’s not till it’s done that we ever really know what the hell it was all for. From what I could gather from rumors from everyone it sounds as though we’re going to create some type of magic wielding human. It sounds ridiculous, I mean how can you create someone with magic? It’s not my field of expertise but such a thing seems farfetched at best. However its really my first major project they’ve given me, even though they say it’s a side project I’m glad they thought highly enough of me to assign me too it. Either that or they’re keeping me away from more important things, can’t imagine why that would be though. I'm not one to toot my one horn but I'm one of the best engineers around here aside from Satoru that is. Anyway they told me the other person I would be working with should be arriving any minute, never worked with the guy before but he’s supposed to be some kind of mana and spiritual researcher, thought two such things could never fit together. Apparently hes been working here far longer than I have been, which isn't really saying too much since is only my second year but it think he's going be watching me work and getting an idea of what I can really do, its rather hard to type this as i find my hands keep shaking.

-Dr. Hiroshi
The room was in similar design as the rest of the labs on this floor, white washed with just a hint of chrome furnish. It lacked any warmth too it, a lab was a place for the expanse on knowledge not for a person’s enjoyment. Hiroshi didn’t mind the stale tasteless colors though, after working for UNITY for the last two years he didn’t really pay attention to the lifeless feeling of the rooms. However one thing he still hadn’t gotten used too was the lack of noise, each of the rooms was created to be sound proof from the rest, the only thing that could leave the rooms were the researchers through the sealed doors. There were many creatures and devices which if fell into the wrong hands could cause quite a bit of damage to the outside world, so the base was well sealed off from the outside world, there seemed to be more security than anything else here. Closing the laptop he pushed it away from him across the metal table its rubber stoppers squeaking over its surface, Dr.Hiroshi sat at the table patiently as he tapped his fingers against his lap. He could feel a small bead of sweat rolling down his face, it was his first major project and he wasn’t sure what to expect from the man that he was going to work with. That was the problem with working for UNITY, things were never known until the last possible second or as it was unfolding before the person, secrecy was something they held close to the core of the organization. One agenda would say one thing but there was always a second agenda that no one but the higher ups would know about, Hiroshi often found that it was difficult to work under such conditions. He was already half way expecting that project to be changed somewhere along the line as UNITY provided them with new guides lines, it wouldn’t have been the first time such a thing had happened.
A sudden spurt of air pressure gushed out from the door as the unexpected noise caused Hiroshi to jump from his chair, causing it to crash on to the ground. Clasping his hand over his heart he could feel the muscle smashing against his rib cage. The sound of the air locked door was all to familiar too him but this time it had caught him off guard as he had been in a daze while he been awaiting for his partner, which appeared to be the man that was now coming through the door with a black brief case in hand. Trying not to look a fool in front of the man he took a deep breath trying his best to gain his composer once again, his hands felt moist with sweat as he wiped them against the hands of his pants trying his best to cleanse his hands of the substance. The dark haired man walked over to Dr.Hiroshi with his hand extended out before him in the traditional greeting that most people used.
“Dr. Hiroshi I would presume, I’m Dr. Ryu, it’s a pleasure too finally meet you. I found your paper on atomic nanites too be quite an interesting read, the in depth analyzation into the core mechanics and abilities raised answers too complex solutions that I very much agree with. Have you thought of applying your theories too any project yet?”
Hiroshi was taken aback by the suddenness of the man, even through his cold voice he seemed generally interested in his thesis he had written a few years back. No one had taken much interest in his theories while he was in school, he had already had the programming and designs set up but never manged to find anyone that would have wished to fund his project. Eventually he lost hope of ever seeing his dream come to life and just set the plans deep within the confines of his computer, it had been years since he had last looked at them but the ideas still floated in his mind. Laughing slightly he pulled his glasses from his face and began to clean them with his shirt.
“Ah that was a project I’ve almost but forgotten, it has been awhile since I’ve heard another person even mention such a thing. I’ve always wished to try to perform an actual test but I never could quite find enough money to back the project, it’s been on hold ever since but I’m starting to think my ideas will never been more than numbers and litter on a computer screen.”
“That’s a shame really, such a understanding of a unbelievably amazing feat being left unfinished.”
“It really is. They could be applied for many different uses but such a new technology came with doubts. Humans naturally are afraid of new things seeing them as dangerous rather than exciting and new, with such uncertainty no one wanted to take the risk on spending so much on something that might not return their profit tenfold.”
“Yes I could understand where they were coming from, I mean if your designed failed then they would be out billions.”
“That’s the thing though, I’ve done runs on my computer thousands of times, over and over. I’ve checked them and every time the result have been conclusive that it does indeed work the way I have programmed it too.”
“And are you sure about that? I don’t meant to step on your toes but-“
“I’m willing to bet everything that I own to my name that it will work, but I’ve never been given the chance to prove it.”
Grinning Ryu placed the black brief case on the metal table next to Hiroshi’s laptop as he reached inside the his black coat. Pulling out a small white envelope he passed it to Hiroshi.
“Well consider this your chance. I’ve talked with the higher ups and they agreed to foot the profit on your test, as it will be key in the project that we will both be over seeing.”
Hiroshi ripped open the envelop as he read over the letter, carefully tracing each of the words with eyes. Most of what was written was bureaucratic bull shit but as his eyes ran over the words he saw the print that made his eyes light up like stars. ‘Your atomic nantie research has been funded for exactly one test in UNITY base level three, if results of said project fit UNITY parameters then project maiden will progress as scheduled.’ There were more lines that followed but Hiroshi was too excited to see what else it had to say, dropping the paper on the table a grin was spread across his face as he did his best to quell the excitement that was firing off inside of him. All those years…all those years and finally someone had given him the chance to prove himself, everything he had been working for had paid off. There was still the obstacles of actually making it work but he was sure with everything he had inside of his body that it would work just as he had planned. Taking a deep breath he calmed himself and turned back to face Ryu, doing his best to keep his built up excitement under control.
“This is great, I can finally see my ideas come to life. But building them will take some time, I just hope they will give me-“He was cut off as Ryu held his hand up to tell him to stop.
“Not to worry, they have already been constructed.” Ryu stated his face not showing any emotion on it.
“What? How is that possible?”
“Your original paper was copied and set in the data banks of UNITY’s servers, of course only the highest level members are able to access it. Your text was very detail in the way you descried the machines, we were able to duplicate such results, which we hope will match what you had envisioned.”
“That makes sense- wait! You have them? Here? Let me see!” His voice rose with deep insight, he couldn’t believe what he was saying, without the blue prints it would have been near impossible for them to do such a thing.
Motioning with his hands Ryu beckoned Hiroshi too follow him as he walked over to a control console that rested a few feet away from the wall. He had noticed it earlier when he had arrived but thought it best not to touch the equipment, things never seemed what they appeared at UNITY and he thought it best not to mess with things he did not know of. Seeing as Ryu seemed to be sure of himself in what he was doing he followed his lead over to the machine as he had already begun to mess with the controls as a holographic screen appeared a few feet out from his face. Many numbers and charts were scattered across the screen but Ryu simple swiped them away with a simple motion of his hand as he pulled up another tab on the screen, on it appear a machine and at first glance Hiroshi knew what it was.
“That- those are my machines!” He managed to shutter his words out through his shock.
“It was hoped as much, it would have been a real hassle to have to recreate such a device. Here is the internal structure of which you described.” He noted as he moved his hand to the side as another holographic screen appeared, this time it was the blue print of the device along with a 3D rendering of the machine. Hiroshi stood in awe as he looked the creation design up and down, looking closely at every detail that was displayed before him. He couldn’t believe in that they had managed to recreate his work so finely just based off his designs, it was brilliant! Even though it had been years since he had last looked at the design he could remember it as though he had never glanced away, at this point he didn’t even need the blue print to know how it worked and how it would be created. UNITY was impressing him more and more with every passing second, but at the same time something clung to the back of his mind. Why had they not come to him in the first place, rather than just take his work and build it without his aid.
“Why…why didn’t UNITY come to me, if they were that interested in my work? I have been working here for the last two years they had plenty of time during that period to ask me.”
Ryu pulled his glasses off his face and held them to the light as he tired to think of an answer, the pause worried Hiroshi slightly.
“From what I have been told, they thought your talents were best set elsewhere at the time.”
“…Then why call on me now? At this point my whole research could have been taken from me. Why tell me all of this?”
“We could take your paper, we could take your blue print, but there was something we couldn’t take, and that was the coding. Such a complex machine no doubt takes years of interwoven expansive coding, while UNITY would have been able to provide such a result it would have taken far more time than they were willing to spend on the project. We needed you for the coding you no doubt have, but do not feel insulted there is another reason they have decided to call upon you now.” He paused as he placed the glasses back on his face and turned towards Hiroshi.
“As much as UNITY as taken they couldn’t think of you being absent when your creation came to life, especially with if being the sole reason project maiden will become a reality.”
Hiroshi placed his hand on his chins as he thought for a minute about the mans words. He was thankful that the hadn’t totally screwed him out of his own designs, but what was this project maiden he was talking about, UNITY’s higher ups had given him so little information on it. As he opened his mouth to ask Ryu the man held his hand up to stop him.
“I’m sure you have a plethora of questions but there will be no point to them if your machines do not preform as we wish them too. Now if you wouldn’t mind, the machine is waiting for the commands to be up loaded.” Ryu motioned at the console before the two of them, as he slid out of the way to let Hiroshi access.
Hiroshi stared at the console then at Ryu for a seconds as the thoughts raced through his mind, his dreams were about to live before his very eyes but at the same time he still had many questions about the project he was about to venture into. What were his creations going to be used for? A deep feeling in the pit of his stomach told him that he shouldn’t go along with the idea, but everything was riding on this moment in time, his career, his dreams, everything. UNITY was a great cooperation to work for but they didn’t give tolerance to any of its employees, if he didn’t do what was asked of him that would probably be it for him. With all the connections they had if they really wanted to, they could bard him from ever having such a successful job again. Seeing the projection on the screen got the better of him as he walked back towards the table and picked his lap top up.
“I’ve always kept the command close too me… I couldn’t let them go after no one took interest in my ideas.”
“It’s lucky that you didn’t otherwise it would have set UNITY back a few years.” Hiroshi couldn't tell what to make of the comment but choice to leave it where it was.
Taking the computer in one hand Hiroshi motioned his hand across the screen as the file that was already open disappeared and reappeared on the consoles holographic screen. Taking a few seconds he took a deep breath and hit the completion button, immediately the data began to upload into the system as he saw he saw the robots began to move on the screen before him. Releasing the pent up air in his lungs he been holding in he breathed a sigh of relief, there had been an air of doubt as he watched, but it vanished as he saw the machines alive. Laughing with joy he turned to Ryu with a bit of surpise as the usally cold face had a tiny grin on it, noting that Hiroshi was watching he made quick work of returning back to his normal self.
“Good I’m glad to see that all your time and effort had not gone to waste.”
“Same here…so about project maiden?”
“Indeed….” He turned around and walked to the metal table, placing his palms against the cool metal he began to talk once again.
“What is said here stays within the walls of UNITY, do you understand this?”
“Well of course, it’s within my confidentiality agreement.”
“And you are well aware of the consequences of such an action.”
“Yes… immediate termination, no service package-“
“Good, if a word of this project is spread beyond these walls that won’t have to be something you have to worry about.” His words came out cold and harsh, making a shiver run down Hiroshi's spine.
“What exactly is the project?”
“UNITY…we… are going to tap into the raw power of which every time came from?”
“Umm…atoms? Unless you’re talking about quarks or-“
“No, no not that.... God. We are going to control god…in a sense at least.” Ryu glanced back towards Hiroshi his glasses blurring white from the lights.
A sudden spurt of air pressure gushed out from the door as the unexpected noise caused Hiroshi to jump from his chair, causing it to crash on to the ground.
