It didn’t take Leke long to find the residential district of Alpha Prime. Unlike where he had been before, in the darkness with the thugs harassing a young woman, this place was lit. The amulet around his neck had long since lost its glow but still reflected a beautiful radiant light from the lightposts about. It sparkled through the jade and showed off the gem’s splendor. The prince touched down in front of what he assumed to be the home of the merchant he had found before, based off of his honed-ki senses. His time training for the tournament had not only beefed him up in power, but also in ability to maximize his ki efficiency. The energy of the plant merchant sat in the small apartment room alone, so Leke simply knocked on the door.
The power was nothing even close to an amount for Leke to be on guard, so Leke was smiling when the door creaked open and the plant alien emerged from behind it. A wrinkly grin formed on the green, vine-y face across from Leke’s. ”So you’ve come, young one. Please, enter my humble abode,” the merchant calmly spoke as he stepped aside. Leke bowed his head in respect of the elder, regardless of the fact that he was royalty, and stepped inside of the alien’s apartment room.
It was surprisingly neat and orderly. There was little in the building, actually, besides a small kitchen and a door leading to a room in the back. The only furniture in sight were a few chairs. The merchant slowly lead Leke to a pair of chairs with a table in between and motioned for him to sit, which Leke promptly did as the elder sat as well.
”My name is Sakaki,” the alien began. ”I have a suspicion I know what you’re here for, but entertain me. Who are you and why have you sought me out?” Leke looked at him inquisitively. This guy already knew that I would come and ask him about the necklace? So I was right in coming here. Leke then smiled and nodded.
”Sir, I am Prince Leke Hattori, a Saiyan from New Vegeta. I was here for the tournament, but ever since you gave me this necklace, I’ve had questions. You see, sir,” Leke said as he gently lifted the jade necklace from his chest for a few brief moments to draw the merchant’s attention. ”It emits an eerie glow at certain times. At first, I thought it was just because it was dark, but that is not always the case. What gives? Do you know what it means or why it does this?” The plant closed his eyes and nodded, almost knowingly of the prince’s situation.
”Ah, yes… The Yasakani. I had my suspicions about you when we first met. I believe that I made the right decision then. I entrusted you with that amulet, because you see, young Leke… That jade is very special. It is a different kind of stone that emits light when about malevolence. And as you can see now, that it does not glow. This means there is no evil about in this place of just us two. In fact, I know that I made the right choice. You are the rightful owner of the Yasakani.” Leke’s eyes widened and found it hard to even swallow. How could he digest this information? A stone that glows when around evil… Wow. That would explain everything. Leke couldn’t even begin to fathom why it would do such a thing, but he knew better than to try to understand what was out of his league.
”I know it is hard to believe, but why else would it not glow now, when in the company of two of pure hearts and minds? And it would have shone in the presence of somebody malevolent, which you have already discovered; that is why you’re here, no?” Leke simply nodded, still trying to absorb the magnitude of what he just discovered.
”What do you mean, sir, that I am the rightful owner? Like, I’m meant to have it? I think you have the wrong guy. I’m a prince of the Saiyan race for crying out loud. We aren’t known for being exactly nice.” Leke said that, but didn’t necessarily agree with the stereotype that all Saiyans were, not necessarily evil, but war-mongering fighters. He was not malicious, and he knew hundreds of others that were almost just like him in viewpoints. The commonfolk were actually pretty peaceful, though it was much more common in females than males.
Sakaki just shook his head and placed his vine-y hand ontop of the necklace, resting where Leke’s heart lay. ”You’re the first Saiyan I’ve ever met, and I wouldn’t be able to tell anything of your race’s history by meeting you. You have the purest heart of anybody I have ever met, even with your background. You’re perfect for the amulet. In my youth, several hundred years ago, I was a fighter much like yourself. I did not seek out the fights, but I used martial arts to defeat others who meant harm. I used it not as a weapon, but as a shield for myself and others. I came upon this necklace in my travels, and whenever it shone, I strode to remove the evil that caused its glow. It was not an easy task.
I succumbed to time’s decay, and I could no longer use my strength to fight my battles. I had to use my energy, what you call Ki, and wits. I saw a lot of my younger self in you, young prince, that day when I entrusted you with the Yasakani. I sense you will do a much better job in its mission than I ever could.” Leke looked down at the necklace on his chest. This was way too much to take in. The necklace… Has a mission? To rid the universe of evil? And I’m supposed to be the tool for that quest? I’ve always tried to do good. Hasn’t a part of me always tried to do exactly that? I feel like this is what I was meant to do.
Leke took a deep breath, and then looked at the plant in front of him with a determined look on his face. ”As strange as it sounds… This seems right. I want to do good. But I have my doubts, sir… I’m not strong enough, not anywhere near it. I cannot protect those that I love, or anybody. I was nearly,” Leke choked up, thinking back to the report of his fight with the Icejin. He gulped; he had to get over it to get better, right? ”Nearly killed, in the tournament. How do you expect me to help others with how weak I am?” Sakaki smiled and nearly appeared as though he was going to laugh, but shook his head again.
”Young Leke, you are not weak, not by a long shot. Perhaps you are not amongst the strongest warriors in the known galaxy, which is perfectly fine. You can always train to get stronger, which I fully believe that you will soon, but what they lack and what you have is heart. Nobody can just train their heart. You have to be born with one. You have the compassion, the love, the care that not many have. I know little personally about you but I feel like I know so much because I can just feel it. That is your strength, prince. You can always grow physically stronger. You’re still young and spry, child. You will develop in time, as long as you push yourself to the limit and never hold back.” Leke was almost brought to tears by the plant’s statements. The fact that this stranger had such total faith in him as a person was powerful, almost overwhelming. Leke looked away to catch his breath before responding.
”I-I… Don’t know what to say. Thank you, sir… I don’t feel as though I’m ready to take the mantle of a savior yet, but if you believe that the necklace was meant for me… Then I will try to honor its and your legacy. I’ll do whatever I can to get stronger to protect others. Thank you, sir, for giving me a purpose.” The rest flowed out like a river, his feelings pouring out. ”I was lost, completely struck when I was so badly defeated in that tournament. I had not a hope in this world for what I was ever going to be. I was in a dark place, but this amulet… It saved me. I saw its glow, and felt about me with my senses and found a young woman I’ve met before being harassed. I made quick work of the thugs, letting them know they weren’t welcome. It felt amazing, knowing I had a use. And now you’ve made sense of it all now. My purpose… To protect others in any way I can. Thank you so much, Sakaki.” The young teenager had been through so much in his short life, it almost saddened the elderly plant alien. But he smiled, proud of the advancement the warrior had achieved in his short life.
”What I would give to be as young as you, Leke,” he said. ”There is no need to thank me, child. In a way, I feel as though I am still doing good by passing my knowledge onto you. In a way… Thank you, for taking on this burden. It becomes heavier, trust me.” Leke nodded, trying not to tear up. This day had turned out to be a blessing for the young teenager. He had become lost and then found himself. A new purpose, one he could carry out even if he was not the strongest ever. But that wouldn’t stop him from trying.
”Any other advice you could lend me, sir?” Leke asked, wanting to get all he could get before trying to find a way off of his space station. No doubt he would have to meet up with his brother and sister, but they may have had already left.
Sakaki nodded and closed his eyes before stretching out his hands, palms up. ”Indeed, young one. Put your hands in mine. I will impart upon you the knowledge of a technique that will come in handy. Remember, shield, not weapon.” Leke nodded and then placed his hands on top of the plant’s. Almost immediately, he felt a surge of power emanate from Sakaki and flow through him. His eyes slammed shut as images flooded his mind. Sakaki, who appeared much younger, was holding a young girl in one arm and holding out a hand with the other. Around him, a green dome of energy was holding back the ki attacks of an unknown assailant. It looked oddly similar to what the one human had used against him in the preliminary rounds of the tournament. It was some kind of barrier, and Leke knew from experience that they were very powerful if used at the right time.
The image disappeared as Sakaki withdrew his hands from the grasp of Leke’s. They both opened their eyes as well. ”You will know how to use it when the time is right. It is an energy barrier that you can place about you and others in a small area, though it is possible to extend its reach. It can deflect attacks, among other things like fire and water, but it is impossible to move while using it. I hope that you will find the use for it in the future, Prince Leke.” Leke nodded and bowed formally to the seated plant alien.
”Thank you, again, for everything. I will take good care of the Yasakani, and try to do good. And I will put the technique to good use. Take care, Sakaki. You’re open to visit New Vegeta at any time; I’ll even pay for your transport.” Sakaki slowly rose to a standing position and smiled at the fourteen-year-old prince who he had just entrusted upon a very crucial mission.
”I may do that in the future. Thank you. May your journey home be peaceful.” Leke nodded and turned and exited the apartment. He nearly collapsed just outside of the door. The gravity of what he had just been entrusted with hit him. He was to protect not only his people, but life itself. The prince found it a hard pill to swallow, but he had to. It was already in his nature, but now it was just becoming real for him. After regaining his footing, Leke clutched the necklace that was around his neck and then soared off into the sky. This is my guide, now, he thought as he headed in the direction of the space port. Time to head home.
