The truth about Androids
As it turns out, there are three types of androids seen in Dragon Ball Z according to their “base” or materials:
[Source: dragonball.wikia.com]
Having read the above descriptions, I want to focus on the “Cyborg” part (#17 and #18) because those are the ones I based Model Zero after. I will continue to demonstrate what I have found concerning this type of android and finally define Model Zero in the process.
The description says that #17 and #18 are Cyborgs, in other words, they are half-human and half-android; however, it doesn’t state a percentage or any particular body part. We have no way of knowing just what part of their body is biological and which is a mechanical construct devised by Dr. Gero. So we ask ourselves a question that has eluded many of us.
Where is the line drawn on the term cyborg?
Does it only apply to metal pieces being inserted into a biological being? In real life, people are implanted with metal parts and rods, we have plastic surgery and prosthetic arms and legs, yet none of them are referred to as “Cyborgs”. Is Akassa a cyborg now that she has a mechanical arm? How much must one be modified in order to be considered a “Cyborg”?
Apparently, the answer is: Not much.
The following description was taken out of a forum called “Kanzenshuu”, where participants have been discussing the ambiguous nature of androids in DBZ –or Cyborgs. Their source is a page called “Kanzentai” which is defined as a database and guidebook to the DBZ universe ( according to the Manga). [http://www.kanzentai.com/daiz.php]
Okay, let me highlight some phrases there:
Interesting. So they're saying that androids 17 and 18 are mostly organic... How much metal are in their bodies?
Doubly interesting. Android 17 and 18 are cyborgs, but they only have an emergency deactivation controller that Dr. Gero used to try and keep them in check, and a self-destruction device in case things went out of hand. To further support this claim with a comment from a member in Kanzenshuu called Herms:
The reason I made this post in the first place is because I'm currently in a thread where my being "inorganic" is being used against me; however, Zero is not completely inorganic and I hadn't had to think about which parts -specifically- were organic or artificial (and I wasn't planning to either), but now that the question has been raised, I set out to find answers. Since I had nothing to go on, I decided that the best way to start is by finding out how 17 and 18 were designed by Dr. Gero; only then can I know what exactly an android is considered to be in the DBZ Universe and just how much of Zero is supposed to be artificial. From my discoveries it seems that they are actually a lot more organic than we gave credit for. The fact that 18 was able to give birth to a baby means that 18 is a living being -just as much as anyone- who was "slightly" altered by a mad scientist. You'd almost think 17 and 18 should be considered "Bio-Androids" instead of cell, but it appears to me that the name refers to their origin and not so much the materials that went into them. Cyborgs like 17 and 18 are cyborgs because they used to be pure humans and then they were modified by Dr. Gero. Androids like 16 are complete robots made to look human, there is nothing biological about them, they bare the true definition of an android. Bio-Androids like Cell were born through unnatural means; nevertheless he was "born" and created from DNA of other lifeforms, he then transformed like a worm cracking through its cacoon.
On the other hand, with all this information, I am still not satisfied. This leaves too many questions unanswered and we can only really speculate. If 17 and 18 are mostly organic, if they are "slightly" modified human beings, then how are they so strong? I doubt they were natural fighters as humans. Why can't their energy be sensed and how did Dr. Gero make it Unlimited without any drawbacks? If they are mostly organic, how are their living parts being maintained if they don't need to eat? How did they know everything they knew about Goku and the Z-Fighters? Did Dr. Gero brainwash them? Did he alter their brains? How are they so resilient compared to a normal person? We used to think they probably had a metallic skeleton or something, but it turns out we're wrong. Without these answers I don't know how much of Zero was modified to realistically give him his abilities. "Only their organic matter had been restructured," I presume he used some kind of superior organs made in his lab or something. What were these organs? It seems, the rest is up to me to find out and I'll do so by attacking each question individually. I'll point out a characteristic Zero has and justify it with possible modifications that have been made to his body. Keep in mind, for some of them I'm just going to use "anime" as an excuse. Not everything needs to make perfect sense. At the end of this post, I hope to have an idea of how much of Zero's body is mechanical and how much is biological.
Sensations.
So the first thing that comes to my mind when thinking about an android is the fact that they do not eat. So I asked myself, what causes hunger? I'm not talking about the fact that your body runs out of energy and you need to eat to renew that energy and keep your organs healthy, I'm talking about the chemical signals sent throughout your body that makes you "feel" hunger. So I found this excellent explanation on Yahoo! Answers:
Perfect! I got four down with one stone!
Hunger
Wakefulness
Happiness
Sexual Arousal
They are all caused by a single chemical called Seratonin. Therefore, Ivan used another chemical (name unknown) which was devised in his lab to counter the effect of seratonin, eliminating those four sensations. However, his work is not over just yet. Sensations like Hunger is a warning our body has engineered through evolution to inform us that the body needs to be fed or they will suffer from malnutrition or dehydration. Removing a fire alarm will not relinquish the fire, it will only make the household vulnerable to incidents. This is where the next section comes in. Note: I am aware that there are many other sensations I am probably ignoring. Keep ignoring it.
Maintenance of Biology.
From this study I have realized that, since part -or most- of Zero's body is organic, I must come up with an explanation that justifies his organs being healthy. The fact of the matter is, androids don't eat, however their living cells still require nourishment. To explain this, Model Zero's stomach has been modified to function like a bioreactor. How? Anime. Ivan usually keeps the android in a large cylindrical tube with green liquid. This liquid is impregnated with nutrients and minerals a biological body needs to survive -giving Zero the impression that he does not need to eat-, excess liquid is stored within the bioreactor for later use; such as when Zero is out to another planet where he is unable to get the nourishment Ivan provides for him in the lab. If Zero is away from the lab and he runs out of fuel, he will require to digest food and the waste is recycled as energy. Zero needs Oxygen, although it is very minimal to the point it seems he doesn't; because of this, he can survive in space for a considerable amount of time -but not forever. His lungs are modified. As for his heart. Does Zero have a beating heart? He obviously has blood (looks at thread with Akassa), which means it needs something to pump it. On the other hand, biological hearts are unreliable. Yes. He has a heart, but although his heart is slightly modified to be more efficient, it's backed up with an artificial one. Yes. Zero has two hearts. His love for devastation is two-fold.
Assimilation of Information and Enhanced Performance.
So, if you noticed, I didn't create Zero with "All Knowing" Knowledge of the universe around him. He wasn't like 17 and 18 who instantly knew all of the Z-fighters, Goku, their power-levels, and anything anyone ever needs to know about them. For those who have read my earlier threads, you will find Model Zero spying at people and learning all kinds of new information. There are even terms he is unfamiliar with, such as "bitch" or "jackass". He was created already knowing Ivan was his master, Ivan brainwashed him into believing it. However, keep your eyes on the underlined word "learning". That's where the detail is. Ivan implanted a chip into Zero's biological brain to enhance his performance. This chip allows Zero to assimilate much more information than the average person and learn and remember things a lot faster. It allows him to think faster, almost -if not entirely- like a machine. It makes him more active and aware of his surroundings. On the other hand, it did not grant him his amazing ability to fight. What the audience was not shown in my posts were all the capacitation exercises that Zero underwent to learn how to use his weapons as if he had been for years. This is thanks, again, to his incredible ability to absorb information like a spounge. Furthermore, the android -like 17 and 18- has no memory of his life as a completely organic being, but that doesn't mean his muscles don't remember. *hint*hint*
Limitless Energy.
Somehow androids have Unlimited Energy. How this is accomplished is troublesome considering that 17 and 18 are mostly organic. Regardless, for some reason, their Power-Levels cannot be sensed. This is probably the hardest part to come up with and I'm actually open to suggestions. Meanwhile, I will have to settle for an explanation a little more vague than the previous sections. He has an Energy Core concocted in Ivan's lab, like Iron Man, and slapped it onto Zero's head. Although its not inside his head like Iron Man has it in his chest, the helmet is simply attached to his head firmly and bears the Energy Core which resonates with his body. The problem is, what happens when someone finally breaks Zero's helmet? Will they be able to sense his energy? Will he cease to function? For lack of an explanation I will have to close this entire predicament with one word. Anime. I will not say what happens when his helmet is removed because that is a special case to be revealed when it actually happens. However, I will argue that his PL will remain untraceable.
Resilience.
Androids are a lot more resistant to damage than average biological beings. You'd think their bodies were mostly composed of metal, as it turns out, that is not always the case. Zero's body in general had been so intrinsically modified with nanotechnology that it is hard to determine what exactly the scientist had weaved between his muscles and bones. At most, the android is just an upgraded lifeform. It can be argued that he has pieces of metals dissolved into his being, but it is only a percentage compared to the other unknown materials which have been thrown into the brew. This is how he obtains his inhumane resilience. I must remind you that he used to be half-human and half-saiyan, so his saiyan genes explain some of his heightened features and abilities, but this thing which was so delicately intertwined with his body gave him the edge among even them. Remeber that Krillin asked Shenron to turn 17 and 18 back into human beings. Shenron could not grant this wish. If they were simply humans with mechanical parts in their bodies, I'm sure shenron would just replace those parts with the organs they used to have. Like changing Akassa's metallic arm for the biological arm that had been stolen from her. However, he could not, implying that the technology used in them was so involved with their very being that he just could not revert them. They were not "changed" they were "evolved". Pokemon cannot go back to their previous forms. (yes... I referrenced pokemon...), we cannot revert ourselves to be primates again (for those who believe in it). What Dr. Gero and Ivan did was take evolution into their own hands and force it to happen.
I'd like to think this is a decent amount of information to explain androids. I'm sure there are plenty other aspects I am missing or simply ignoring, but I don't plan on defining Zero to the atomic level. Unless I missed something which just can't be ignored or you feel it should absolutely be explained to a certain degree or -at least, mentioned, comment about it below. Otherwise, I will use one word to explain it. Anime.
The next step to defining Zero is by taking all of the abilities I have already given him. I will separate them into categories describing whether or not it affects is cybernetic makeup. For example, if you can use alchemy to turn your arm into a sword, then that implies your arm needs to be metallic in order to do so. If your ability is to sense energy, then that doesn't necessarily mean your brain is artificial, so it is most likely organic. This, I believe, is the last step to defining Model Zero.
Non-Integral - These are objects, abilities, or techniques that do not physically alter Model Zero. In other words, they are something another person could do without being an android. The explanation to him having that ability is in [brackets]
Integral to Body - objects, abilities, and techniques which require modifications in Zero's body in order to be possible. No one can do this exactly how he does it without becoming an android themselves.
So now, I will assign the number 10 to each of the listed parts of Zero's body: General Body (bones and stuff), Left Arm, Right Arm, Legs, Organic Heart, Artificial Heart, Stomach, Lungs, Brain, Right Eye, Left Eye, Pelvis. For every "Modified" I will reduce 5. From every "Inorgaic" I will reduce 10. This is intended to generate the theoretical percentage of how organic Zero is.
General Body (Bones, Muscles, Skin, etc.) 10 - 5 = 5
Left Arm (Slightly organic, mostly artificial) 10 - 9 = 1
Right Arm (Modified) 10 - 5 = 5
Legs (Modified) 10 - 5 = 5
Organic Heart (Modified) 10 - 5 = 5
Artificial Heart (Inorganic) 10 - 10 = 0
Stomach (Modified) 10 - 5 = 5
Lungs (Modified) 10 - 5 = 5
Brain (Implanted Chip) 10 - 1 = 9
Right Eye (Modified) 10 - 5 = 5
Left Eye (Modified) 10 - 5 = 5
Pelvis (Modified) 10 - 5 = 5
There are 12 items listed above. 10 x 12 = 120. This number will represent Model Zero's entire makeup. After reducing each one according to their label, I come up with 55. 55 represents all of Zero's organic body parts.
55 / 100 = 0.55 x 120 = 66%
Because 55 is 66% of 120, I have determined that Model Zero is 66% organic and 34% Inorganic.
Finally, I have defined Model Zero's design. If anyone disagrees with anything that has been written here thenshutthehellup comment below. I understand that, although this is based on what the Manga says and the individual interpretation of DBZ fans, it's not necessarily how androids are viewed in this forum. For example, I read in a wiki that Androids can't be sensed with scouters. I mentioned that in the cbox and Akassa said that our current rules will most likely not change regardless. So androids can still be sensed by scouters -in DBZ Awakening. There will probably be similar cases though I hope it's minimal. Ultimately, I hope this changes how everyone views androids and that what Model Zero is has been clarified to an acceptable degree.
Thank You. (This post has been inspired by Zeke NeCross)
P.S. DragonBall Awakening's description of an android supports this perfectly.
As it turns out, there are three types of androids seen in Dragon Ball Z according to their “base” or materials:
- Cyborgs (such as #17, #18, #20, and possibly #13)Androids made from an original human as a base. Since they are human-based, they can become stronger if they train. Though they do not need to eat, they do need to hydrate. Also, their cells deteriorate slowly, so they age slowly too.
- Total Artificial Constructs (such as #8, #14, #15, #16, #19, and Arale)Androids which were made up completely from mechanical. For some reason, the totally artificial ones have a blood-like liquid crimson substance, presumably a kind of power oil.
- Bio-Androids (Cell and the Cell Juniors).A bio-mechanical android, constructed bio-artificially rather than from machine parts and/or a human base. Also, his power runs on some form of cross-organic ki based on cells from different humans, Saiyans and other species, which makes it generally circulate the same way as that of organic warriors.

Biotechnological-type Artificial Humans
03 ~ Artificial Human No. 17
A cool-headed artificial human who enjoys battles as if they were games. As the twin brother of No. 18, he places more importance on power. Like No. 18, he is fundamentally human-based and only his organic matter has been restructured. The few mechanical parts that are used were for his emergency deactivation controller and self-destruction device. If the emergency deactivation controller is used on the powerful No. 17 and No. 18, they become unable to move their bodies. As infinite models, No. 17 and No. 18's energy is limitless. Even if they discharge barriers or energy bullets, it isn't depleted.

After looking at 17's blueprints, Bulma says 17 and 18 are mostly modified only with organic materials, which is why Cell can merge with them on a cellular level. Kuririn also says in the Boo arc (when Goku asks about 18 being able to have a kid) that 18's just a human who's been "modified a little bit". If they had big clunky robot skeletons or whatnot, presumably Cell would have had trouble absorbing them like he did with 16. Though it's notable that 17 and 18 are the only ones he sucks up vacuum cleaner-style, and the fact that 18 gets spat out with her clothes intact and everything kind of makes Bulma's comment about Cell merging with them on a "cellular level" seem odd.

I'm not talking about the fact that your body runs out of energy and you need to eat to renew that energy and keep your organs healthy, I'm talking about the chemical signals sent throughout your body that makes you "feel" hunger. So I found this excellent explanation on Yahoo! Answers:
As for WHAT makes us feel tired this is going to take some chemistry. An important neurotransmitter in your brain is Seratonin. It has a lot of responsibilities ranging from hunger, wakefullness, happiness, and sexual arousal. Throughout the course of the day, Seratonin is broken down into a chemical called Melatonin. Melatonin is an inhibitory neurotransmitter which shuts down the activity of neurons and thus gives us the feeling of being tired.
The reason why its a "strain" is because over evolution thats the only way that worked to actually get us to go to sleep. It makes us listen to what our brain is telling us. Much like lactic acid causes pain when working out--it tells us to stop so our muscles can replenish oxygen.

Both of Zero's eyes are organic and modified to be as resilient as the rest of his body; however, his left eye has been implanted with a small scouter.
- Hell's Flash Zero's entire Left Arm is artificially reconstructed and engineered to possess a cannon within. There are still some muscles around it, but this is probably the part of his body with the most concentration of metal.
- Defense Up! [Nanotechnology] Furthering of his resilience with an extra layer of prosthetic skin over his organic skin.
If anyone disagrees with anything that has been written here then
Thank You. (This post has been inspired by Zeke NeCross)
P.S. DragonBall Awakening's description of an android supports this perfectly.
Androids vary greatly in appearance, and can appear as Humans, Saiyans, Icejin, or literally any other race. Androids can even appear as something other than these races, it is really up to the creator. They can be mostly flesh and blood with robotic parts, or fully robotic with humanoid appearances.
