Hey everyone,
I am really great at curriculum writing. Seriously they pay me a lot of money to do it. The problem is I always get tripped up on the science experiments. Math, Fine. Personal development, you betcha! Physical activities, no sweat! Science...Yeah no.
Anyway I know a lot of you are pretty great with science, some of you working with it on a daily basis. Any activities you can suggest that would be science oriented? Keep in mind the age group is 5-11 and the supplies are rather limited. Anything would be greatly appreciated! I have google, which is nice, but it is inaccurate. Rarely do the experiments work the way they should, and in most cases the kids get bored.

Stand in a doorway and push your arms up against the door frame for a minute, then move away, your arms will rise on their own. Science!

Well, here's a short and interesting experiment. Science class teaches us that objects can be positively charged and negatively charged. Like charges repel and opposite charges attract, but how do we know that different charges actually exist? How do we prove it?
Get four pieces of duct-tape. You have to do this in a dry place. Place one piece of tape on a table and label it B, then stick a second piece over B and label it A. Do the same thing with the remaining two pieces of duct-tape separately. You need an assistant to do this with. You are both gonna get one of the AB pairs and rip them apart really fast (like ripping a bandaid off). If you put A near A, you will discover that they repel each other (the top parts) and if you put A near B, they attract each other. (Don't let them touch or they will become neutral and the experiment ends. I thought this was pretty cool.
Another experiment, get a flat plate and pour water into it. Insert a match into a cork and place it at the center. (Doesn't have to be a cork). Light the matche and quickly cover it with a cup. Tue water will be sucked into the cup. It's pretty crazy. I don't know why it happens though.
Another experiment. Get two forks and bind the teeth together. Stick a toothpick inbetween. You can balance it on your finger. If that's not exciting enough, balance it on the edge of a cup and burn off the butt until the other side of the toothpick is gone and you're left with a fork balanced on the edge of a cup with relatively no support.

Stick two rolls of duct tape together and then tear them apart from their ends, if the room is dark enough you can see sparks of energy form as they come apart.

Man: Wow, you must be a science major.
Maya: Something about being in the dark with kids makes my supervisor uncomfortable lol.
Della: you are dangerous lol xD I don't know what that will do.
Thanks for the suggestions yal! Feel free to keep them coming!

It actually doesnt do anything bad, the soap just sort of rapidly expands and becomes super foamy, it was mostly a joke but for your younger kids it would be pretty cool.

I'm an engineering major. XP BTW, below is a link to an experiment for Non-Newtonian liquid. You need cornstarch for this. Essentially, once prepared, the cornstarch acts like a liquid when left alone but then it acts like a solid when you try to apply force on it like pressing your finger. If you put this over a large speaker, you can see stick figures dancing. Check for Non-Newtonian fluids on youtube. scifun.chem.wisc.edu/homeexpts/lumpyliquids.htm

Could always clone some sheep and pit them against eachother in animal combat for money... thing is, I got a D for that.
